Why Are Swiss Watches Considered the Best?

Swiss watches are highly regarded for their history and industry, but Swiss Made is an origin label, not a guarantee of superior performance. Here's how to compare the claims.

Swiss watches are considered among the best because Switzerland has a centuries-old watchmaking tradition, a dense network of specialist makers and suppliers, and a legally protected Swiss Made origin label. Some watches also carry independent performance certifications. But Swiss Made is not a universal quality grade: it does not guarantee that every Swiss watch is more accurate, durable, or better value than a watch from another country.

What makes Swiss watches highly regarded?

The reputation rests on several factors that reinforce one another: generations of watchmaking expertise, a concentrated production ecosystem, and the Swiss name’s association with watchmaking. Switzerland’s industry has also adapted through major technological changes rather than relying only on its history.

A long-standing watchmaking tradition

The Swiss government traces the industry’s roots to Geneva in the mid-16th century, when goldsmiths and jewellers turned to watchmaking. Production later became concentrated in Geneva and the Jura region, where manufacturers, suppliers, skilled workers, and watchmaking schools developed alongside one another. Mechanical watchmaking and art mechanics have been on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list since 2020, according to the Swiss government.

A concentrated industry, not just individual artisans

A 2023 overview from Presence Switzerland, part of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, reports around 700 watchmaking firms and approximately 60,000 workers. It attributes around 4% of Swiss GDP to the sector and reports more than CHF 24 billion in industry value in 2022. Wristwatches accounted for 95% of watchmaking export revenue, at an average export value above USD 1,500 per item; the overview does not give a separate reference year for those last two figures.

This network supports specialist knowledge across design, components, assembly, and finishing. It helps explain why Swiss watchmaking is associated with both industrial capability and skilled craft, without making every watch from Switzerland identical in construction or quality.

A reputation tested by technological change

Swiss watchmaking faced a serious challenge when Japanese quartz watches became more accurate and less expensive than Swiss mechanical watches. The sector restructured, and the Swatch launch in 1983 was part of its response. Switzerland’s industry retained a strong high-end mechanical identity while also making quartz watches; Swiss origin alone does not tell a buyer which movement type a particular model uses.

What does Swiss Made mean on a watch?

Swiss Made is a regulated geographical indication of origin, not a blanket grade for quality or performance. Switzerland’s revised watch ordinance took effect on 1 January 2017. The Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property (IPI) explains that the revision was intended to strengthen the link between the label and Swiss production.

Under the criteria described by the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FH), a Swiss Made watch must have technical development in Switzerland, a Swiss movement, casing-up in Switzerland, and final inspection by the manufacturer in Switzerland. At least 60% of the manufacturing costs of the complete watch must be generated in Switzerland. The movement has its own requirements, including at least half of its value in Swiss-made components and 60% of its manufacturing costs generated in Switzerland. The label does not require every component to be Swiss-made.

In practical terms, Swiss Made tells you that the watch meets legal Swiss-origin criteria. It does not establish that every part was made locally, that the watch has passed a particular accuracy test, or that it is the best choice for a given buyer.

What do Swiss watch certifications prove?

Certification can provide more specific performance evidence than an origin label, but only for the criteria and testing scope stated by the certifier. METAS Master Chronometer certification and ISO 3159 chronometer certification are not interchangeable.

Certification What is tested Accuracy requirement
ISO 3159 chronometer The movement Average daily rate deviation from -4 to +6 seconds per day
METAS Master Chronometer The finished mechanical watch, including accuracy under factors such as temperature, position, magnetisation, and power reserve; it also validates power reserve and tests water resistance 0 to +5 seconds per day

METAS also audits manufacturers and inspects sample testing. Its Master Chronometer requirement means a watch must not run slow and must not run more than five seconds fast per day under the stated testing standard. The broader finished-watch process assesses more than the movement’s rate alone.

Neither certification applies automatically to Swiss watches generally. Check the claim for the exact model, and distinguish a tested movement from a tested finished watch.

Are Swiss watches objectively better than watches from other countries?

There is no established all-country ranking that makes Swiss watches objectively best in every category. Swiss origin and a strong tradition can be meaningful reasons to choose a watch, but the label alone does not show that it is more accurate, more durable, or better value than a comparable Japanese, German, or other watch.

“Best” depends on what you need. Compare specific models rather than relying on country of origin as a shortcut:

  • Accuracy: Look for a stated tolerance or certification, and check whether testing covers the movement or the complete watch.
  • Movement: Choose between mechanical, quartz, or another movement type based on your preference and use; Swiss makers produce both mechanical and quartz watches.
  • Durability and water resistance: Check the model’s stated rating and intended use. A certification that tests water resistance is evidence about that test, not a substitute for the model’s specifications.
  • Materials and finishing: Assess the actual case, crystal, bracelet, dial, and finishing on the model. The Swiss Made label does not specify these choices.
  • Ownership: Compare warranty terms, service access, expected maintenance, and total price for the particular watch and your location.
  • Origin: Treat Swiss Made as evidence of legal Swiss-origin criteria, not as proof that every component was made in Switzerland.

Why can Swiss watches cost more?

Swiss watches span a wide range, and the Swiss Made label alone does not explain an individual model’s price. A buyer may be paying for a particular movement, materials, finishing, design, certification, or brand positioning; compare those specific features and the ownership terms instead of assuming the country label guarantees better value.

The IPI reported in 2016 that studies by ETH Zurich and the University of St. Gallen found consumers generally willing to pay up to 20% more for a Swiss watch and up to 50% more for certain mechanical watches. The IPI page does not identify the underlying studies’ years, so these are historical reported findings, not current estimates of what buyers pay today.
