The Fortis Novonaut N-42 Cobalt Blue is a 42 mm automatic chronograph distinguished by its blue sunburst dial and, in Fratello’s launch-era review, a smoked sapphire display back. It is offered in two configurations: bracelet reference F2040012 and hybrid-strap reference F2040013. The choice is mainly about how you want to wear its substantial case: Fratello’s reviewer found the bracelet solid and flexible, while the firm hybrid strap felt comfortable and helped balance the watch’s weight. What distinguishes the Cobalt Blue edition?
The Cobalt Blue is a colorway in Fortis’ Novonaut N-42 collection, which the brand presents as a successor chapter to its B-42 Official Cosmonauts line. Fratello’s launch-era review describes this edition’s blue sunburst dial and smoked sapphire display back. Those edition-specific details matter when comparing listings. Fortis’ current detailed product page in the available listing is for the Titanium Legacy configuration, not Cobalt Blue. Specifications and what they establish
Fratello’s 2023 overview reports the N-42 family at 42 mm in diameter, 15 mm thick and 51 mm lug-to-lug, with a sapphire crystal, 200 m water resistance, and an automatic Werk 17 column-wheel chronograph movement with a 60-hour power reserve. These are review-era family specifications; the source does not provide a separate current specification sheet for the Cobalt Blue variant.

Fortis’ detailed Titanium Legacy listing also gives 42 mm, 15 mm, 51 mm lug-to-lug, 200 m water resistance and a 60-hour reserve, but identifies that particular watch as titanium and lists a titanium Block Bracelet, slide clasp with microadjustment, screw-pin mounting and a reversible screwdriver. Bracelet or hybrid strap?
Fratello’s reviewer characterized the Block bracelet as flexible and solid, but said it makes the watch feel heavy and substantial. The hybrid strap was described as firm and comfortable, helping balance the watch’s weight; the reviewer particularly liked the blue model’s appearance on the strap. These are that reviewer’s hands-on impressions, not independent measurements of fit or comfort.

For the blue edition, the choice therefore comes down to preference: the bracelet offers a more substantial metal look, while the hybrid strap changes the visual balance and was the reviewer’s favored presentation of the blue dial. Before ordering, confirm that a listing’s reference and included attachment match the configuration you want. The 225 g figure sometimes cited in discussion of the N-42 refers to Fratello’s measurement of the Legacy Edition, not the Cobalt Blue.
How substantial does it wear?
The reported 51 mm lug-to-lug span and 15 mm height are useful fit considerations alongside the 42 mm diameter. They indicate that case length and thickness deserve attention, not just the nominal diameter. Fratello’s reviewer’s description of the bracelet version as heavy and substantial reinforces that this is not presented as a discreet, lightweight chronograph. No Cobalt Blue-specific weight or wrist-size fit measurement is established in the cited sources, so try the exact configuration if possible rather than treating the Legacy Edition’s measured weight as a proxy.

What does the space-testing story mean?
Fortis describes the Werk 17 as space-tested in collaboration with the Swedish Space Corporation. Its collection account refers to a 2022 suborbital rocket test and also discusses an earlier stratospheric balloon test. Fortis’ current Novonaut collection listing shows CHF 4,900 for the Cobalt Blue Block Bracelet and says it is sold out online, with availability through selected partners. That is the listing’s current stated status, not a guarantee of stock at a particular retailer or in every region.

Fratello’s 2023 launch-era review listed €5,100 for the Cobalt Blue bracelet and €4,750 for the strap. These are historical figures from a different source and currency context, not a like-for-like current price comparison. Confirm the price, included configuration and availability with Fortis or a selected partner before buying. Who should consider the Cobalt Blue?
- Consider it if you want a blue-dialed, mechanically complex chronograph and value the N-42’s reported column-wheel movement and 60-hour reserve.
- Choose the bracelet if you prefer the more substantial metal presentation and the bracelet setup; choose the hybrid strap if you want the alternative look Fratello’s reviewer found comfortable and well balanced.
- Check fit carefully if you are sensitive to thickness or a long lug-to-lug span, and assess the exact configuration rather than relying on another edition’s weight.
- Verify before purchase that the reference, material, caseback, attachment and local stock all match the specific Cobalt Blue listing you intend to buy.
