Fortis says its Werk 17 chronograph movement was tested with the Swedish Space Corporation in the stratosphere and during a rocket launch into open space. The movement is fitted to the Fortis Stratoliner S-41. What is the Fortis Werk 17?
Werk 17 is a self-winding column-wheel chronograph movement that Fortis associates with its Stratoliner and Novonaut collections. In the Stratoliner S-41 brochure, Fortis calls it a “Stratosphere-tested self-winding column wheel chronograph.” The brochure also describes a specially designed bridge and tangential micro-screw regulation, and says the movement is regulated to Fortis Performance Standards. Fortis lists a 60-hour power reserve, chronograph, and day-date display for Werk 17. These are the manufacturer’s published specifications, not independently measured results.
What does Fortis say about the stratosphere and rocket launch?
In an official corporate post, Fortis says Werk 17 was “Tested with the SSC – Swedish Space Corporation, both in the stratosphere and during a rocket launch into open space”. That wording should be understood as Fortis’s account of the testing. The material available does not say whether the movement alone or a complete watch was flown for each test, or identify the flight altitude, test duration, environmental conditions, measured results, or a named independent certification standard. Without those details or an independent test report, the post does not allow readers to assess the test method or verify the performance claim independently.
Which watch uses Werk 17?
The Stratoliner S-41 is the consumer watch identified in Fortis’s brochure as using Werk 17. The brochure lists a 41 mm case, 200 m / 600 ft / 20 atm water resistance, sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides, a screw-down crown with a triple-gasket system, and recycled stainless-steel and rubber construction. These are brochure specifications; the brochure’s publication date is not established here, so check the current reference and availability with Fortis or an authorized seller.

The same brochure shows dial colors and strap or bracelet configurations, rather than a single universal setup. Confirm the configuration for the specific S-41 reference you are considering.
