Fossil’s 2021 announcement meant that older watches such as the Gen 5, Gen 5E and Fossil Sport would not move to Google and Samsung’s new Wear OS platform. Fossil later clarified that it still planned software features for Gen 5 and Gen 5E, but it never confirmed a full platform upgrade for those watches. The company’s 2024 exit from smartwatches ended any prospect of a future Fossil watch generation; it did not mean existing watches would suddenly stop working.
What was Fossil’s bad news in 2021?
In June 2021, Google and Samsung announced a unified Wear OS platform. Initial reporting said Fossil would not upgrade its existing watches to that platform, raising concern for owners of older Fossil Group models. The affected devices included the Fossil Gen 5, Gen 5E and Fossil Sport, along with other older Fossil-branded and licensed watches. The exact outcome varied by model and software support; the announcement should not be read as proof that every Fossil Group watch had identical eligibility. Droid Life’s June 2021 report and update documented both the initial news and Fossil’s subsequent clarification.

The practical concern was losing access to the newer platform and its features, not an immediate shutdown. An older watch could continue to provide notifications, alarms, fitness functions and installed apps while its battery, phone pairing, Google services and apps continued to work. Over time, however, older hardware, app requirements and less predictable maintenance could narrow what it could do.
What did Fossil’s clarification change?
On June 7, 2021, Fossil said its teams were still working on software features for Gen 5 and Gen 5E and were evaluating how much of the new platform could be supported. That softened the original message: “no upgrade to the new platform” did not mean “no more software updates.” But Fossil did not give owners a firm, model-by-model promise of a full Wear OS platform upgrade or a detailed long-term update schedule.

| Question | What Fossil’s clarification established |
|---|---|
| Were Gen 5 and Gen 5E software features still being worked on? | Yes. Fossil said feature work was continuing. |
| Was a full upgrade to the new Wear OS platform confirmed for those watches? | No. Fossil said upgrade plans were still being developed. |
| Did the announcement mean owners had to replace a working watch immediately? | No. It concerned future software support, not an announced shutdown. |
How did Gen 6 differ from Gen 5?
Gen 5 and Gen 5E use Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 hardware; Gen 6 moved to Snapdragon Wear 4100+. Fossil announced Gen 6 in 2021 as compatible with Wear OS 3, putting it in a different hardware position from the earlier models. That distinction matters: the 2021 concern about older watches should not be applied to Gen 6 as if the devices were identical. Compatibility, however, was not a guarantee of an indefinite update roadmap. Fossil’s launch announcement described Gen 6 and its platform plans in 2021: Fossil Group’s Gen 6 press release. Fossil’s comparison material lists the chipset differences: Fossil’s smartwatch comparison.
What changed when Fossil left the smartwatch business?
In January 2024, Fossil confirmed it was exiting the smartwatch business and would not launch new smartwatches. It said it would continue supporting existing watches “for the next few years.” The Gen 6 was effectively the company’s final major Wear OS generation. This made the 2021 uncertainty part of a longer retreat from smartwatch hardware, rather than a temporary disagreement over one software upgrade. 9to5Google reported Fossil’s exit and support statement.
“Support for the next few years” is not a universal end date or a guarantee of a major operating-system upgrade. The statement does not establish that every model will receive the same maintenance, repairs or parts availability; those can depend on model, country, warranty status and remaining inventory. Nor did Fossil announce that existing watches would be remotely disabled.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check and look after a Fossil Wear OS watch
- Check the exact software version. On the watch, open Settings → System → About → Versions. Google distinguishes the Wear OS version from the system version, so note both. Google’s Wear OS update guidance explains where to find them.
- Install updates that are offered. Check the watch’s update screen and the companion app used by that specific model. Availability depends on device support.
- Avoid an unnecessary factory reset. A reset erases settings and installed apps and can require pairing from scratch. Google says moving a supported watch to Wear OS 3 performs a factory reset, unpairs it and requires the manufacturer’s companion app. Before resetting an older watch, confirm that its setup path and required app are still available.
- Assess battery and charging. On aging hardware, declining battery life or unreliable charging may be a more immediate limitation than the operating-system version.
- Check the services you rely on. App installation, payments, notifications and health-data syncing can depend on the watch’s software, phone, region, Google services and third-party app support. If updates have stopped, be cautious about relying on the watch for payments or sensitive account activity.
Google’s current Wear OS help directory still lists Fossil, including Michael Kors, among manufacturers with device-help and companion-app paths: Google’s Wear OS manufacturer and device-help directory. That listing is useful for setup guidance, but it is not a promise of future operating-system upgrades.

| Situation | Practical choice |
|---|---|
| It pairs reliably, battery life is acceptable, and its current apps and features meet your needs. | Keep using it; the 2021 news alone is not a reason to replace a working watch. |
| Battery or charging problems interfere with daily use. | Check repair or warranty options with Fossil, bearing in mind that eligibility and parts availability vary by region, model and age. |
| Pairing fails after a phone change, or an essential app or service no longer works. | Confirm compatibility and available fixes; if the limitation cannot be resolved, replacement is reasonable. |
| You need newer platform features or a dependable long-term update commitment. | Plan for a currently supported watch rather than counting on a future Fossil upgrade. |
Phone choice matters. Google says Wear OS 3 devices paired with iOS do not support Google Wallet or Google Maps. Check the exact watch’s phone compatibility and the services you need before buying or switching; do not assume an older Fossil model will provide the same experience across Android and iPhone.
Anyone considering a used or clearance Fossil should factor in battery age, charger availability, warranty coverage and the device’s software version—not just the purchase price. Fossil’s continuing-support statement does not guarantee that every component will remain available indefinitely. For an existing watch with a warranty or repair issue, Fossil’s support page is the appropriate starting point: Fossil Wear OS setup and support.
What this means for Fossil owners now
The 2021 news was serious because it left owners of older Fossil Group watches without a confirmed path to the new Wear OS platform. Fossil’s clarification preserved the prospect of feature updates for Gen 5 and Gen 5E, but did not promise a full upgrade. The later smartwatch exit removed the prospect of new Fossil hardware and left only an open-ended support commitment for existing devices. A working watch does not need to be replaced on a calendar; replace it when its battery, compatibility, app support or lack of maintenance becomes a problem for how you use it.
