Castronovo wears it as an everyday watch, but its lasting value is personal: looking at it brings his grandfather to mind.
How Castronovo chose the Mark XV
In an excerpt from Matt Hranek’s A Man and His Watch, Castronovo recounts that his grandfather, Lou Dileo, visited him and his family in Germany in 2000. Dileo had a tradition of giving watches and jewelry for important occasions, and asked his grandson what he wanted.

Castronovo had become interested in IWC, so he suggested visiting the company’s boutique. He remembers driving with Dileo from Freiburg through the Black Forest to IWC, where they bought the Mark XV. The shared trip and purchase are central to the watch’s significance in his account.
What he likes about the watch
Castronovo singles out the Mark XV’s simplicity, large numerals, black dial, stainless-steel case and comfort. He says it works with casual clothes or when he dresses up, which helps explain why he wears it every day. These are his preferences and impressions of his watch, rather than claims about the comfort or performance of every Mark XV.

His most direct explanation is: “I like its simplicity.” He also describes it as “my everyday watch” and “an heirloom” to pass to his children and grandchildren.
Why it is an heirloom to him
Castronovo says Dileo was like another father to him. The Mark XV keeps their shared experience close because it is both a watch he continues to use and a reminder of the person who chose it with him. As he puts it, “I look at this watch every day, and so every day I think of Lou Dileo.”
The heirloom quality in this story comes from that connection, not from any documented appraisal or claim about the watch’s market value. Castronovo’s intention is to pass it down through his family.
