Their main distinction is the dial: the SBGW297 has a white radiating-pattern dial and blue-steel seconds hand, while the SBGW299 has a cool, dark-blue dial. Grand Seiko’s official pages identify both as 44GS models, but the available sources do not establish when either reference was first announced or went on sale.
What is the difference between the SBGW297 and SBGW299?
The shared case and movement make dial appearance the clearest distinction. Grand Seiko’s Japanese boutique description gives the SBGW297 a white dial with a radiating pattern and blue-steel seconds hand. The official US product page describes the SBGW299’s dial as cool, dark blue and highlights its faceted indexes and box-shaped sapphire crystal. These are the manufacturer’s descriptions of the designs.

For fit, the 42.7 mm lug-to-lug measurement is useful alongside the 36.5 mm diameter: it describes the case’s end-to-end length across the wrist. Both are supplied on steel bracelets, and the listed band width is 18 mm. Bracelet comfort and sizing depend on the wearer, so those dimensions are a starting point rather than a guarantee of fit.
How does the 44GS design shape these watches?
Grand Seiko says the original 44GS debuted in 1967 and embodied the “Grand Seiko Style.” The company says a modern interpretation returned in 2013, with modern durability and comfort. Its description of the style emphasizes broad mirror-polished surfaces, sharp ridgelines, multifaceted diamond-cut indexes, and the play of light and shadow.

The SBGW297’s dial treatment gives that design language a distinct Japanese reference. Grand Seiko’s Japanese boutique page likens its radiating planes to the straight surfaces of shoji screens, folding screens and fans, with a fan as the visual evocation. On the SBGW299, the maker instead calls attention to the dark-blue dial, faceted indexes and box-shaped sapphire crystal.
What movement is in the SBGW297 and SBGW299?
Both watches use Grand Seiko’s hand-wound caliber 9S64. The movement has 24 jewels, beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour, and is specified to run for approximately 72 hours from a full wind. That reserve is about three days; the manual-winding format means the wearer winds the watch rather than relying on wrist motion to power an automatic winding system.
How accurate is the Grand Seiko 9S64?
Grand Seiko publishes two different accuracy figures for caliber 9S64. Its movement-only mean daily rate is +5 to -3 seconds per day, measured before casing under controlled conditions. Its stated normal-use accuracy range is +10 to -1 seconds per day. The former is a controlled movement specification; the latter is the relevant manufacturer range for a watch in use, not a promise that every individual watch will keep that rate every day.

- Three-fold clasp with push button release
- Dual-curved sapphire crystal
- Power reserve display on the back
- Power resrve Approx. 72 hours(3 days)
Grand Seiko notes that actual mechanical-watch accuracy varies with factors including wearing time, temperature, motion, shock and vibration. The two references share the same caliber, and the published specifications do not establish that one is more accurate than the other.
What do 10 bar water resistance and the dimensions mean in practice?
Grand Seiko lists 10 bar water resistance for each model. Treat that as the maker’s specification, not a blanket assurance for every water activity. Consult the instruction manual and the manufacturer’s guidance for the intended use. The stated 36.5 mm diameter, 42.7 mm lug-to-lug, 11.6 mm thickness and 18 mm band width are identical on both official product pages.

Prices shown on official pages depend on region and date. On October 8, 2026, Grand Seiko’s US product page displayed USD 5,900 for the SBGW299; the Japanese Grand Seiko Boutique Online page displayed ¥770,000 including tax for the SBGW297. These are regional page prices, not a direct before-tax comparison, and displayed prices may change.

- 24-hour hand (dual time display function)
- Power Reserve Approx. 55 hours
- See-through case back
For historical US context, Grand Seiko’s price-adjustment notice dated October 31, 2024 said the pre-tax MSRP for both references was USD 5,400 through October 31, 2024, changing to USD 5,600 effective November 1, 2024. That notice is not a current price quote.
Although the title’s “new” framing may suggest a recent launch, Grand Seiko’s product pages and the other cited official material do not establish either watch’s original announcement or sale date. They identify the models as part of the modern 44GS Heritage Collection; availability also varies by country and is not established comprehensively here.
