Fratello writer Jorg Weppelink chose five watches as his personal favorites from Watches and Wonders 2024: a brown-dial Cartier Santos Medium, a rose-gold Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse, a black-dial Tudor Black Bay, an unusually complicated A. Lange & Söhne “Lumen,” and a gold Czapek Antarctique. His list is a set of individual preferences, not a complete roundup or an objective ranking.
Weppelink said that several releases were variations on existing models and that he found it harder than in previous years to assemble a list. The five that stood out to him range from relatively restrained steel sports watches to a limited-production, multi-complication Lange. The specifications and prices below are those reported in his April 19, 2024 article; the prices are historical figures, not current retail quotes.

Why these five made his list
Cartier Santos Medium: the cleaner Santos layout
Weppelink preferred the Medium over the Large because the Medium leaves out the date aperture, giving the dial a cleaner layout. The brown dial also gives this steel Santos a distinct look within a familiar design. His selection is as much about the proportions and uncluttered face as about the watch being a new release.

Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse: a bracelet takes center stage
The Golden Ellipse pairs its ebony-black sunburst dial with a new rose-gold bracelet. Weppelink draws attention to the bracelet’s construction: its 363 components include more than 300 links. The watch’s very slim profile and ultra-thin automatic movement sit alongside that elaborate piece of metalwork, rather than a conspicuous sports-watch case or an array of complications.
Tudor Black Bay: a more modern direction
Weppelink liked the black-dial 41 mm Black Bay’s cleaner, more modern appearance compared with the preceding burgundy model’s vintage styling. The METAS-certified movement and two bracelet choices give this pick a practical as well as a visual point of difference; the two reported 2024 prices vary by bracelet.

A. Lange & Söhne “Lumen”: the technical outlier
The Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon combines a flyback chronograph, perpetual calendar and tourbillon in one watch. Its semitransparent sapphire dial lets luminous displays remain visible, making the “Lumen” treatment part of the way the complications are presented. At 50 pieces, it is the list’s explicitly limited-production selection. The article says the official price was available on request; its separate approximate figure is an estimate attributed to RJ, not an official price.
Czapek Antarctique Mount Erebus: gold with an integrated bracelet
The Mount Erebus brings the Antarctique’s integrated-bracelet format into yellow or rose gold, with a textured blue dial. Weppelink’s personal choice between the two was yellow gold. The article reports separate production limits and prices for the two metals, making this the list’s clearest direct choice between variants.

What the list says about Watches and Wonders 2024
These picks are deliberately mixed: a clean steel Cartier and a modern Tudor sit alongside two gold bracelet watches and a highly complicated Lange. They are not presented as a ranking by technical achievement, value or popularity. Weppelink’s summary of his own reaction was: “So while there weren’t as many pieces with the ‘wow factor’ at this year’s Watches and Wonders, these five picks stood out for me.”
His selection reflects a fair where incremental variations could still catch his eye, whether through a changed dial, a new bracelet, a different visual character or an ambitious combination of complications. Readers can compare the watches on those terms without treating his favorites as a comprehensive account of every notable 2024 release.
