Fratello On Air’s episode “Our Favorite Seiko Watches Ever” names six favorites from across Seiko, King Seiko and Grand Seiko. They are the hosts’ personal selections, not a ranked list or a like-for-like buying comparison. The choices range from vintage references to Grand Seiko’s modern collection, with one current Prospex Alpinist family offering a route to a new watch today.

What the episode’s six favorites are

Michael Stockton and Balazs Ferenczi discuss the six picks in a Fratello episode published December 24, 2025. The episode invites listeners to share their own favorite Seiko references; it does not rank the watches or compare them by price, condition or availability. Read the episode page.

Pick What the hosts say Useful context
Seiko 6139-7070 A standout reference that showcases Japan’s first automatic chronograph. Seiko dates the launch of Caliber 6139 to 1969 and describes it as one of the world’s first automatic chronograph calibers, incorporating a column wheel and vertical clutch. That history applies to the caliber; it does not independently verify every detail of the 6139-7070 variant. Seiko’s chronograph history.
Grand Seiko 44GS, reference 4420-9000 One of the brand’s most significant designs. This is the hosts’ design judgment. Seiko’s heritage history establishes Grand Seiko’s origins, but does not substantiate the specific assessment of this reference. Grand Seiko heritage.
King Seiko 5626-7000 A “Hi-Beat legend” with an appealing price. The price description belongs to the episode, not a current market survey. The available sources do not establish this reference’s exact beat rate, present-day price range or availability.
Seiko Champion Alpinist J13043 A distinctive model with a distinctive dial. Seiko dates the Laurel Alpinist’s introduction to 1959 and describes its original purpose and design, but that family history does not confirm the specifications of Champion reference J13043. Seiko’s Alpinist history.
Grand Seiko’s modern collection A collection-wide favorite rather than a single reference. Grand Seiko began in 1960 with an ambition to make a watch distinguished by accuracy, legibility and durability, according to the brand’s heritage account.
Seiko 6215-7000 A watch that, in the hosts’ view, broke boundaries for Seiko and set a lasting design standard. That influence claim is the episode’s editorial assessment; reference-specific primary documentation was not established in the available sources.

Why the 6139 matters in the list

Among the six choices, the 6139 has the clearest movement-level historical context in Seiko’s own account. The company says Caliber 6139 launched in 1969 and was one of the world’s first automatic chronographs. It highlights the combination of a column wheel and vertical clutch as central to the caliber’s significance. This supports the broader history of the movement, not every specification or feature of the particular 6139-7070 named by Fratello.

The vintage Alpinist and today’s Prospex Alpinist are different watches

Seiko’s Alpinist story begins with the Laurel Alpinist in 1959. The manufacturer describes it as a watch for mountain climbers and recreational field-sports enthusiasts, and lists features including a screw-back case, sturdy leather cuff band, luminous hands and indexes, and mountain-shaped markers. Those details describe the original Laurel Alpinist; they should not be assumed to specify the Champion Alpinist J13043 in Fratello’s list.

For readers who want a current watch rather than a discontinued vintage reference, Seiko’s global Prospex Alpinist page lists the mechanical SPB503, SPB505 and SPB507 as available from November 2025. The page gives the family a three-day power reserve and 20-bar water resistance, and identifies Caliber 6R55. These are current Prospex family details, not specifications of the vintage Champion pick, and the modern models are not presented as exact reissues of J13043. Check the relevant regional product page for local availability and specifications. See Seiko’s current Prospex Alpinist models.

Choosing between a current model and a vintage reference

The episode’s selection points to two different ways to explore Seiko: consider a current collection model, or seek out one of the named vintage watches. The sources available here do not establish comparable prices, stock, condition, service history or value across the six picks, so they cannot support a buying ranking.

What the episode does—and does not—settle

The six selections offer a personal cross-section of Seiko-family watches, spanning vintage chronographs, King Seiko, Grand Seiko and an Alpinist. The episode provides the hosts’ favorites and opinions; it is not evidence that one reference is objectively best, currently affordable or easier to find than another. Seiko’s official histories add context for Caliber 6139, the Alpinist family and Grand Seiko’s beginnings, while the reference-specific details and market conditions for several vintage picks remain unestablished in these sources.
