No—a high-priced watch does not automatically need a high-priced strap. A less expensive strap can be a good choice if it fits the watch and you like its comfort and appearance. The decision depends on the material, construction, and your priorities, not a universal price rule.
What Fratello’s discussion is about
In its June 6, 2024 episode page, Fratello Talks: Expensive Watches On Cheap Straps, Fratello frames the issue with two questions: does a €3,000–10,000 watch make sense on a €10 strap, and is a €300 original-equipment-manufacturer (OEM) strap worth it? These are illustrative prompts, not market averages or a price-to-quality formula.
The page identifies Nacho, RJ, and Morgan as participants. Its wrist check includes RJ’s Rolex Sea-Dweller 16600 on an Oyster bracelet, Morgan’s Speedmaster on a gray ribbed NATO, and Nacho’s Omega Seamaster Professional 300M reference 2254.50.00 on a €13 NATO. These are examples from the episode, not a controlled comparison of strap prices or performance. The page also notes that Morgan was making his final appearance as a Fratello staff member; that is historical episode context.
What matters more than the watch’s price
Comfort and feel
Fratello treats NATO preference as subjective: some wearers may prefer the feel and appearance of an inexpensive nylon strap to a premium “seatbelt” weave. A strap that feels good on your wrist is a legitimate choice regardless of the watch’s price.

Appearance and material
Consider whether the strap’s color, texture, and profile work with the watch. Nylon NATO straps, leather, sailcloth, rubber, and metal bracelets each create a different look and wearing experience. Fratello’s editorial view is that buyers may notice differences as they spend more on leather, sailcloth, rubber, and bracelets, while preference for nylon weave can remain personal. This is an opinion, not a product test.
Fit and compatibility
Check the lug width and confirm that the strap is compatible with your particular watch before buying. The Fratello page does not provide sizing instructions, so use the watchmaker’s specifications or ask a qualified retailer if you are unsure.

Durability and value
Price alone does not establish how long a strap will last or whether it is worth the cost to you. The episode page offers no comparative durability testing or formula for value. Think about how you will wear the watch, the strap’s material and construction, and whether the price makes sense for your budget.
How to choose a strap for an expensive watch
- Confirm compatibility. Verify the strap width and attachment type for your watch before choosing a style.
- Choose the material for the use. Compare nylon NATO, leather, sailcloth, rubber, or a bracelet based on the feel and look you want.
- Try options when possible. Compare flexibility, texture, and how the strap sits on your wrist; Fratello’s recommendation is to experiment and find personal favorites.
- Set your own budget. A premium OEM strap may appeal to you, but the watch’s purchase price does not by itself require an equally expensive strap.
If you are considering an affordable nylon NATO, compare its width, weave, hardware, and feel rather than assuming every inexpensive option is alike. No specific strap listing or tested product is established by Fratello’s page.

It can be. Fratello’s conclusion is that strap choice has no universally right or wrong answer; try options and choose what suits your preferences. An inexpensive strap is not automatically a poor match, just as an expensive OEM strap is not automatically the best value for every wearer.
