The right vintage Rolex Datejust is the one whose size, configuration and condition suit you—and whose history and seller can be assessed with confidence. Start by deciding what you want to wear, then verify the specific watch rather than relying on the Datejust name, photographs or box and papers alone.
What makes a Datejust a Datejust?
Rolex dates the Datejust’s launch to 1945. The original combined a self-winding, chronometer-certified movement with a date shown in a window at 3 o’clock; Rolex says the Jubilee bracelet was created for the occasion. The date display remains central to the model’s identity, alongside design features Rolex identifies as emblematic, including the Cyclops lens over the date. Rolex’s Datejust collection and its history account describe the family’s origins and evolution.
That shared design language does not mean every Datejust is the same watch. Vintage examples span different references and configurations, and the model has evolved over time. Treat “vintage” as a broad description rather than a precise age cutoff: the sources here do not establish one universal definition.
Choose the configuration that fits your use
Think first about how you plan to wear the watch. A Datejust for regular daily use may call for different priorities from one intended for occasional wear. Whenever possible, try a candidate on; there is no universally correct case size or wrist presence.

Compare the case’s actual feel on your wrist, not just a measurement in a listing. The dial, bezel and bracelet also affect how prominent a watch appears. Decide whether you prefer a discreet fit or a stronger visual presence before narrowing the search.
Metal and bezel
Consider the look you want and the cost implications of the exact metal and bezel combination. Rolex’s modern collection shows that the Datejust exists in multiple sizes and materials, while the company’s historical account reflects decades of design changes. Those pages establish variety, not which combinations are correct for a particular vintage reference; check the claimed configuration against reliable reference-specific information before buying.

Dial and bracelet
Compare the dial and bracelet with the seller’s description of the reference and period. Appearance alone does not establish that a dial is original, and no reference-by-reference originality matrix is established here. Ask for a clear account of the bracelet’s condition and whether all included links are shown or described. Do not assume that a bracelet, dial or accessory is correct merely because it appears in a listing.
Assess the seller, authenticity and purchase terms
Authenticity risk belongs to the individual watch, not the model name. A serial number, box, papers, seller photographs or one convincing visual detail cannot by itself establish that a watch is genuine. Prefer a seller who will provide clear documentation, answer questions about the watch and put the sale terms in writing. Check the return or remedy policy before paying.

Rolex Certified Pre-Owned
Rolex’s Certified Pre-Owned program is a branded route for eligible pre-owned watches offered by participating Official Retailers. Rolex states that a watch must be at least two years old to qualify; program watches are certified authentic, serviced and checked through Rolex’s after-sales process, and come with a new two-year international guarantee from the date of sale. See Rolex’s Certified Pre-Owned program terms for the program description. Eligibility does not mean every vintage Datejust is available through the program: participation and stock depend on retailer and region, so ask a local Official Retailer what it currently offers.
Other sellers and independent assessment
If a candidate is outside the Certified Pre-Owned route, arrange an assessment by an appropriately qualified watch professional when its authenticity or condition is uncertain. Make that assessment part of your purchase decision, and agree on written terms that explain what happens if a concern is found. No universal pass/fail checklist can replace an evaluation of the particular watch.

Check condition and service history before setting your budget
Ask what work has been done, when it was done, who performed it and what records are available. A watch that is running is not necessarily recently serviced or ready for long-term ownership. Factor possible servicing, bracelet work or parts replacement into your budget only after the specific watch has been assessed.
The official information cited here does not provide a current Rolex service-price schedule or a dependable service interval for each vintage reference. For an estimate, ask an authorized Rolex service channel or qualified watchmaker to assess the exact watch and its condition. Treat an estimate as provisional until you receive a confirmed quote.

Use market estimates as context, not a valuation
WatchCharts’ October 2026 estimates provide reference-level orientation for two vintage Datejust references:
| Reference | Estimated market price | Stated range |
|---|---|---|
| Datejust 1601 | $4,835 | $3,965–$5,705 |
| Datejust 16013 | $5,409 | $4,473–$6,345 |
These are third-party estimates reported for October 2026, not Rolex prices, appraisals of an individual watch or guaranteed transaction prices. They are not universal values across countries. Compare like with like, taking account of the candidate’s condition, configuration and documentation, and check current data before using these figures in a purchase decision. WatchCharts’ Datejust market data is the source for the estimates.
A practical checklist before you commit
- Try the watch on if possible, and confirm that its size and wrist presence suit you.
- Write down the configuration you want: metal, bezel, dial and bracelet.
- Check that the seller’s claimed reference and configuration are supported by appropriate documentation or qualified advice.
- Ask for service records and a clear description of the watch’s condition, bracelet and included links.
- Read the seller’s written return or remedy terms before payment.
- Arrange a qualified assessment if authenticity, condition or service history remains uncertain.
- Budget for possible maintenance only after the specific watch has been assessed; distinguish an estimate from a confirmed quote.
- Use reference-level market estimates as context, not as a promise of what a particular watch is worth.
For readers who want the Datejust’s history
Nicholas Foulkes’s illustrated book Oyster Perpetual Datejust – A Watch that Made History is a history-focused further read, not a technical buying guide or authentication manual. Wallpaper* reported that the 224-page book covers the 1945 launch and the addition of the Cyclops lens in 1953. Wallpaper*’s report on the book provides further details; check current availability with a bookseller.
