Fratello Talks: Understanding Water Resistance

A watch’s water-resistance number indicates pressure resistance, not an unconditional depth guarantee. Check the model’s instructions, standards, and condition before wearing it in water.

A watch marked “50 m” is not automatically safe to wear 50 metres underwater. Water-resistance ratings describe resistance to pressure under specified test conditions; they are not unconditional depth guarantees for every activity or every watch condition. Whether you can swim with a particular watch depends on its instructions, construction, and current sealing condition.

What a water-resistance rating tells you

Water resistance is a watch’s ability to resist water entering its case under pressure. A marking in metres or bar communicates a pressure limit, not a promise that you can use the watch at that literal depth in all circumstances. The ISO explains the approximate relationship between pressure units and immersion depth in its April 2013 overview of water-resistant watches; consult the current standard and the watch’s own instructions for specific use.

The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FH) explains that pressure can be static or dynamic. Static pressure relates to immersion depth. Dynamic pressure can arise from movement between the watch and the water, so a still-water laboratory test does not reproduce every condition a watch may encounter on a wearer’s wrist. Read a rating as a technical indication, not a universal activity clearance. FH: Water resistance in depth

Can you swim with a 50 m watch?

Do not decide from “50 m” alone. Check the exact model’s instructions and permitted activities. The rating by itself does not establish that swimming is suitable, and it certainly does not certify a watch for diving. Dynamic pressure, the watch’s sealing condition, and its maker’s guidance all matter.

  • Everyday exposure: Follow the model’s guidance for incidental contact with water.
  • Surface-water activities: Confirm that the manufacturer permits the intended activity for that exact model.
  • Diving: Look for documentation explicitly stating conformity with ISO 6425, rather than assuming a generic depth marking means the watch is a diver’s watch.

Why seals and condition matter

Gaskets seal joints in the case and areas around components such as the crown. FH notes that their effectiveness depends on the materials and the integrity of the parts they seal; polymer gaskets can lose properties over time. A shock affecting a sealing component can also compromise resistance. TAG Heuer likewise warns that aged gaskets or impacts to parts such as the crown, pushers, or crystal can affect a watch’s water resistance. FH: A reality check on watches’ water resistance · TAG Heuer: watch user guides

A watch can therefore be unsuitable for water even if its original specification appears adequate: age, damage, previous opening, and uncertain service history all affect how much confidence to place in the seal. Vintage watches and watches of unknown condition deserve particular caution. Arrange an appropriate water-resistance check with the manufacturer, an authorized service center, or a qualified watchmaker before relying on one around water.

Ratings, standards, and diver’s watches

ISO 22810 applies to water-resistant watches generally; ISO 6425 is the standard for diver’s watches. A depth rating alone is not evidence that a watch conforms to ISO 6425. FH says documentation accompanying a claim of conformity should explicitly refer to that standard. FH: A reality check on watches’ water resistance

For watch selection, compare the intended activity, the model’s instructions, and its condition—not just the number on the dial or case back. A watch documented as a diver’s watch under ISO 6425 is a different claim from a watch described only as water-resistant. Even then, follow its specific operating and maintenance instructions.

When to get a water-resistance check

Follow the maker’s maintenance advice for the particular watch. TAG Heuer recommends a water-resistance check every two years for watches worn in water; that is TAG Heuer’s guidance, not a universal schedule for every brand or model. If a watch has been shocked, opened, or has an uncertain service history, seek advice before water use rather than relying on its original rating.

The Fratello episode gives Thomas’s Kiwame Tokyo Iwao Ginkai and Nacho’s Nomos Club Sport Neomatik Worldtimer Jungle LE as examples of 100 m-rated watches with screw-down crowns. Those are examples discussed in that episode, not a basis for assuming all watches from either maker share those specifications or are suitable for every water activity.
