Jorg Weppelink’s January 30, 2026, selection is an editorial favorites list—not a ranked test or a claim that these are AP’s five objectively best watches.
The choices span calendar and chronograph innovation, archival design, openworked mechanics, and a natural-stone dial. Three are Royal Oaks; the [RE]Master02 and technically ambitious RD#5 broaden the selection. Their differences make the list more useful as a tour of what caught Fratello’s attention than as a direct contest between equivalent watches.
1. Royal Oak Selfwinding Perpetual Calendar (2025)
Fratello’s lead pick is a 2025 anniversary release centered on calibre 7138 and a practical change to perpetual-calendar operation. The article says all calendar functions can be adjusted through the crown, without the usual case-side correctors, and that the calendar can be corrected both backward and forward. That focus on intuitive setting is the standout distinction: the complication is not only about displaying extensive calendar information, but also about making adjustment less cumbersome.
Fratello names a blue-dial stainless-steel version, reference 26674ST.OO.1320ST.01, and a sand-gold version, reference 26674SG.OO.1320SG.01. Both are listed at 41 × 9.5mm. The article reports that AP technical director Giulio Papi led the calibre’s development and connects its emphasis on intuitive operation to smartphone usability.

2. Royal Oak “Jumbo” Extra-Thin Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Chronograph RD#5 (2025)
The other major 2025 release in Fratello’s selection is the RD#5, a chronograph that combines high-end complications with a reworked control experience. Its calibre 8100 uses a rack-and-pinion mechanism intended to reduce the force needed to operate the pushers. A lower pusher resets the chronograph seconds hand in a retrograde motion.
Other features highlighted by Fratello include crown-based mode selection, a vertical clutch, flyback, 30-minute and 12-hour counters, instant-jumping chronograph hands, a peripheral rotor, and a flying tourbillon. The article gives a movement count of 379 parts and states a price of €260,000; that is the article’s quoted figure, not a verified current offer.

3. [RE]Master02 Selfwinding (2024)
The [RE]Master02 brings an archive-inspired, deliberately unconventional shape into a list otherwise led by technically forward-looking releases. Fratello traces its asymmetrical design to the 1960 Model 5159BA, of which the article says only seven examples were made. The modern edition is limited to 250 pieces.
Fratello describes a 41 × 9.7mm 18K sand-gold octagonal case, a “Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50” dial, calibre 7129, and a 52-hour power reserve. The appeal is architectural rather than conventional: the unusual case and the crystal-and-dial combination make this the selection’s most visibly archive-derived design. Weppelink notes that several people on the Fratello team adore it, a qualitative editorial observation rather than a measured survey.

4. Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel Openworked “Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50” (2025)
Among a trio of blue-ceramic anniversary Royal Oaks, Fratello singles out the Double Balance Wheel Openworked. Its case and integrated bracelet are blue ceramic; the article lists a 41mm case, 9.7mm thickness, and 50m water resistance.
Openworked calibre 3132 has two balance wheels and hairsprings mounted on a shared axis. Fratello’s design rationale is the contrast of the blue ceramic with a rhodium-plated movement and pink-gold bridge, hands, and markers. The result pairs an exposed movement with a strong material-and-color identity rather than treating the mechanism as the only visual point of interest.

5. Royal Oak Selfwinding 37mm Turquoise
This yellow-gold Royal Oak uses a natural turquoise stone dial, so the pattern varies from one example to another. Fratello gives the dial a thickness of 0.75mm and identifies the stone’s origin as Mexico. The watch measures 37 × 8.9mm and uses calibre 5900, with a 60-hour power reserve.
Weppelink’s attraction is the combination of vivid color and a smaller case size. He notes that the watch can suit smaller wrists while wearing larger than expected. The naturally varied dial also means the specific surface pattern is part of each individual watch’s character.
