Fratello’s Robert-Jan Broer chose five Royal Oaks for their design, historical role and technical interest—not as a sales ranking or an objective consensus. His February 10, 2023 list spans the original Jumbo lineage, the oversized Offshore, experimental complications and the 15300 Date. Here is what each selection contributes, with specifications attributed to Fratello’s article.
How to read Fratello’s five picks
Broer’s choices are personal favorites that he considers historically important. They cover distinct branches of the Royal Oak family rather than five variations of one formula: the foundational Jumbo, the bolder Offshore, two experimental watches, and a more conventional Date model. The dimensions and movement specifications below are figures reported in Fratello’s 2023 article; they are not independently verified manufacturer specifications.
| Model | Role in the list | Key figures reported by Fratello (2023) |
|---|---|---|
| Royal Oak “Jumbo” | Foundational design and proportions | 39 mm wide; approximately 8 mm thick |
| Royal Oak Offshore “The Beast” | A larger, more assertive design departure | No dimensions cited here |
| Royal Oak RD#2 Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin | Thinness paired with a perpetual calendar | 2018 platinum watch: 41 mm wide, 6.3 mm thick; caliber 5133: 2.9 mm thick |
| Royal Oak Concept Watch 1 | Experimental materials and display | 44 mm case |
| Royal Oak 15300 | A Date model with caliber 3120 | 39 mm; successor 15400: 41 mm |
1. Royal Oak “Jumbo”
Why Broer chose it
Reference 5402 is the first Royal Oak in Fratello’s account. The Jumbo lineage continued through references 14802, 15002, 15202 and 16202. Broer favors the family’s proportions: the article describes these references as 39 mm across and approximately 8 mm thick. He considers 41 mm versions too large and 36 mm versions too cramped; those judgments are his preference, not a universal fit rule.
What distinguishes the movement
Fratello describes caliber 2121 as Audemars Piguet’s version of the ultra-thin caliber 920. The article highlights its 21-karat-gold rotor mounted on a rail and a Patek Philippe Gyromax balance. These construction details help explain why the Jumbo is more than a size choice in Broer’s ranking: its thin profile and movement are central to its identity.

2. Royal Oak Offshore “The Beast”
A deliberate departure
Broer selects Offshore reference 25721ST, nicknamed “The Beast,” as a consequential change in direction. In his account, then-CEO Stephen Urquhart asked designer Emmanuel Gueit in 1989 to create a more masculine watch. Audemars Piguet introduced the Offshore in 1993, after delaying its release.
Why it mattered to the author
The Offshore’s bolder scale and character set it apart from the original Royal Oak. Broer argues that this departure helped shape Audemars Piguet’s desirability in the 1990s and 2000s. That is his historical assessment; the article does not quantify the model’s market impact.

3. Royal Oak RD#2 Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin
A slim case with a complex calendar
Fratello’s 2018 platinum RD#2 is reported as 41 mm wide and 6.3 mm thick, with a perpetual calendar. In the article, caliber 5133 measures 2.9 mm thick, has a 40-hour power reserve and contains 256 parts. Fratello compares it with caliber 5134, reported at 4.31 mm thick and 374 parts. These are the article’s specifications, rather than figures independently confirmed here against Audemars Piguet documentation.
A later limited edition
Fratello also reports a 2019 platinum-and-titanium version, reference 26586IP.OO.1240IP.01, limited to 200 pieces. That edition is distinct from the 2018 platinum watch described above; the 200-piece figure is not a statement about current availability.

4. Royal Oak Concept Watch 1
The original Concept, not a later variant
Broer’s choice is the original Concept Watch 1 (CW1), introduced in 2002—not a later Concept model. Fratello describes its case as 44 mm and made from Alacrite 602. The article names caliber 2896 and highlights its tourbillon and Dymograph, a display indicating mainspring torque at that moment.
Why it stands apart
Fratello attributes movement development to Audemars Piguet Renaud & Papi and presents the CW1 as an unusually ambitious technical and design statement. In Broer’s selection, it represents the Royal Oak as a platform for experimentation, rather than simply a sports watch with familiar styling.

5. Royal Oak 15300
A 39 mm Date with caliber 3120
Fratello dates the 15300’s introduction to 2005 and describes it as a 39 mm Royal Oak Date. The article calls caliber 3120 the first in-house-developed movement used in a regular Royal Oak. Compared with the contemporary Jumbo 15202, the 15300 is thicker and has a more solid bracelet with a butterfly clasp. Fratello also notes its seconds hand and the different placement of the “Automatic” dial text.
Its place in the lineup
The article says the 15300 was replaced in 2012 by the 41 mm 15400. That progression makes the 15300 a useful contrast in the list: it retains a 39 mm case like the Jumbo but offers a different movement and a more conventional Date configuration.

What connects the five
Broer’s list moves between different ideas of what a Royal Oak can be: a slim, foundational design; a larger and more forceful Offshore; a perpetual calendar engineered around thinness; an experimental Concept with a torque display; and a Date model centered on caliber 3120. The picks are most useful as a map of the collection’s range, not as a universal ranking of the best references.
