Fratello’s five picks pair recognizable movie watches with more approachable ways to find or wear them—but they are favorites, not a definitive ranking. In a July 5, 2024 feature, watch writer Jorg Weppelink chose one watch per brand and framed the list as a conversation starter. The useful distinction is that some entries are vintage screen-associated references, while others have modern alternatives that are not the exact watches shown in the films.
Five movie watches at a glance
| Watch | Film connection | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Seiko 6105-8110 “Captain Willard” | Apocalypse Now | Vintage reference identified by Fratello; modern Prospex alternatives include the SPB151 and SPB153. |
| Hamilton Khaki Field Murph | Interstellar | The film featured the 42 mm model; a 38 mm version offers a smaller-wearing option. |
| Citizen 8110A Challenge Timer “Bullhead” | Once Upon a Time in Hollywood | The film is set in 1969, but Fratello dates the watch’s release to 1972. |
| Casio G-Shock DW-5600C-1V | Speed | The vintage reference associated with Keanu Reeves is distinct from the current-style DW-5600E-1V alternative named by Fratello. |
| Benrus ref. 3061 | Bullitt | Fratello identifies Steve McQueen’s watch as the civilian reference; a larger modern Series #3061 followed in 2022. |
Fratello’s euro and dollar figures below are prices or vintage-market estimates published in July 2024, not current quotes. Availability, condition, and value can vary; check present listings and verify a vintage watch’s reference and condition before buying.
Seiko 6105-8110 “Captain Willard” in Apocalypse Now
Fratello identifies Martin Sheen’s watch in the film as the Seiko 6105-8110, commonly nicknamed the “Captain Willard.” It reports production from 1970 to 1977, a 44 mm case, 150 m water resistance, 19 mm lug spacing, caliber 6105, and a 46-hour power reserve. Those dimensions and specifications describe the vintage reference, not every watch inspired by it.
Fratello put vintage asking prices at about €1,200–€2,000 in its July 2024 article. It also cited €3,000–€5,500 for the premium SLA033 reissue and €700–€1,200 for the more affordable modern Prospex SPB151/SPB153 versions. These article-era ranges are not current pricing guidance. If the screen connection matters most, look for the 6105-8110 itself; if a newer watch is the priority, consider the Prospex alternatives as modern counterparts rather than the original film watch. Hamilton Khaki Field Murph in Interstellar
The watch featured in Interstellar is the 42 mm Khaki Field Murph. Fratello highlights the seconds hand’s Morse-code “Eureka” detail and listed an 80-hour power reserve. Its July 2024 price was €1,095.
Choosing between the 42 mm and 38 mm Murph
Hamilton added a 38 mm Murph in 2022. Fratello gives its thickness as 11.1 mm, tip-to-tip length as 44.7 mm, and lug spacing as 20 mm; the July 2024 price was €995. The smaller case is the direct consideration for someone who finds a 42 mm watch too large, while the original 42 mm model is the film-associated size and carries the seconds-hand detail discussed by Fratello. For current model information, see Hamilton’s official Murph collection page.

Citizen 8110A Challenge Timer “Bullhead” in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Fratello identifies the gold-colored Citizen worn by Brad Pitt’s stuntman character as the 8110A Challenge Timer, also called the “Bullhead.” One qualification matters: the story is set in 1969, while Fratello says the watch was released in 1972. It is therefore a period mismatch, not a watch that was available in the story’s year.
The article reports a 38 × 41 mm case and multiple case finishes. The original is a vintage-market purchase; Fratello’s July 2024 estimate was €1,000–€1,250. It also mentions a 2021 quartz collaboration with Japanese retailer Beams, but that is not evidence of a current, broadly available worldwide reissue. Fratello’s feature.

Casio G-Shock DW-5600C-1V in Speed
Fratello associates the vintage DW-5600C-1V with Keanu Reeves in Speed and says the watch reportedly belonged to him. The model was introduced in 1987. Fratello’s July 2024 vintage estimate was €300–€800, a range that depends on the particular watch and its condition.
For a modern alternative, Fratello names the DW-5600E-1V, which it listed at €99.90 in July 2024. It is not the same reference as the vintage film-associated DW-5600C-1V. Casio has an official DW-5600E-1V product page; check regional availability and current pricing there or with a local retailer.
Rank #4
Benrus ref. 3061 in Bullitt
In Bullitt (1968), Steve McQueen wears the civilian Benrus ref. 3061, according to Fratello. The article describes a 34 × 41 mm case, acrylic crystal, military-style 12/24-hour dial, and manual-winding movement. Its July 2024 vintage estimate was €500–€1,500, depending on condition.
Fratello says a larger modern Series #3061 arrived in 2022, with a 39.5 × 48 × 12 mm case and automatic Soprod P024 movement. The article listed it at US$595 at publication. That modern model differs in size and movement from the vintage civilian reference, and current availability and price should be confirmed before treating the 2024 figure as useful for a purchase. How to use the list when choosing a watch
- For the closest screen connection: identify the exact vintage reference first. A reissue, successor, or alternative may share a design, but it is not automatically the watch seen in the film.
- For a new-watch route: the Murph size comparison and the DW-5600E-1V are the clearest modern options named here. Confirm current availability and local pricing rather than relying on July 2024 figures.
- For a vintage purchase: condition and authenticity affect what a particular example is worth. Compare the reference and condition carefully; Fratello’s published ranges are historical estimates, not a guarantee of value.
- For film-era accuracy: note the Citizen’s 1969 story setting against its reported 1972 release date.
The appeal of these picks is the range of ways a film connection can lead to a watch: an original vintage reference, a smaller case option, or a modern counterpart. Fratello presents them as personal choices, leaving room for readers to nominate their own favorites.
