Fratello’s five-watch summer dive-watch list uses “smaller” to mean under 39mm, an explicitly arbitrary cutoff. Its picks—the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Automatique, Tudor Black Bay 54, Aquastar Model 60, Oris Aquis 36.5mm, and Zenith Defy Revival A3648—are presented in random order, not as a ranking. The article was published June 20, 2025; its listed prices are historical figures, not verified current quotes. Fratello’s original article is the source for the specifications and prices below.
What counts as a smaller dive watch?
For this list, Fratello author Thomas Van Straaten calls watches under 39mm “smaller,” 39–42mm “medium,” and those over 42mm “large.” He describes the boundary as arbitrary. Diameter is a useful starting point, but it does not tell the whole fit story: lug-to-lug length, thickness, and case shape affect how a watch wears on the wrist.
Fratello’s five picks
The original article gives these watches in random order. The dimensions, movement details, water-resistance ratings, configurations, and prices here are those reported in that June 20, 2025 article—not a current manufacturer or retailer check.
| Watch | Dimensions and water resistance | Movement and design | Configuration and price reported by Fratello |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Automatique | 38mm diameter; 43.8mm lug-to-lug; 12mm thick. Water-resistance rating not stated in the article. | In-house automatic caliber 1150; 100-hour autonomy. | Van Straaten’s preferred steel, black-dial model on rubber; €18,050. |
| Tudor Black Bay 54 | 37mm diameter. Lug-to-lug, thickness, and water-resistance rating not stated in the article. | Highlighted details include a lollipop seconds hand, smaller crown, and bezel insert without gold details; its broad stance helps offset its modest diameter. | On bracelet; €4,120. |
| Aquastar Model 60 | 37mm diameter; 47mm lug-to-lug; 11mm thick; 200m water resistance. | Re-edition of a classic skin diver; Sellita SW200 Elaboré. | Price of US$1,390 includes a beads-of-rice bracelet. |
| Oris Aquis (36.5mm) | 36.5mm diameter; lug-to-lug and thickness not stated in the article; 300m water resistance. | Sellita SW200; 38-hour power reserve; 28,800vph. The article describes its shape and short lugs as making it wear particularly small. | Bracenet edition; €2,350. |
| Zenith Defy Revival A3648 | 37mm diameter; 15.5mm thick; 600m water resistance. Lug-to-lug not stated in the article. | Reproduction of a 1969 Zenith diver; in-house Elite 670 at 28,800vph with a 50-hour power reserve; orange sapphire bezel inlay. | Five-row bracelet; €8,000. |
How to compare the five
Look beyond diameter
The Aquastar’s 47mm lug-to-lug measurement is longer than its 37mm diameter might suggest, while the Blancpain pairs a 38mm diameter with a 43.8mm lug-to-lug length and 12mm thickness. The Oris is described as wearing particularly small because of its shape and short lugs, though the article does not provide its lug-to-lug or thickness measurements. Those details matter: a smaller diameter alone does not guarantee a compact feel.

Water resistance and movement details
Among the figures stated in the article, the Aquastar is rated to 200m, the Oris to 300m, and the Zenith to 600m. It does not state water-resistance ratings for the Blancpain or Tudor, so those should not be inferred from this comparison. Movement information also varies in detail: the article gives calibers and reserves for the Blancpain, Oris, and Zenith, and identifies the Aquastar’s Sellita SW200 Elaboré, but does not provide comparable movement specifications for the Tudor.
Different design approaches
The five options span a classic skin-diver re-edition, a modern Black Bay, a compact Aquis, a historically styled Zenith revival, and Blancpain’s Fifty Fathoms. Fratello’s description of the Tudor focuses on its lollipop seconds hand, smaller crown, bezel appearance, and broad stance; the Zenith stands out for its orange sapphire bezel inlay and five-row bracelet. Van Straaten particularly favors the Blancpain, writing: “I have spent some time with it, and I absolutely love it.”
