Fratello editor Robert-Jan Broer’s five-watch collection is a snapshot of his tastes and life at the time he wrote about it—not a universal formula for what a collection should contain. His edit brings together three Omega watches, a Rolex and a Breguet, with roles ranging from daily favorite to family heirloom.
Why these five watches made Broer’s edit
Broer framed the selection around his life and preferences at the time: approaching 47, married, with a daughter, and working mostly in an office or traveling for Fratello. He also mentioned supporting his daughter at hockey, playing golf, seeing friends and family, and valuing time at home after frequent travel. His taste had shifted toward classic dress watches and precious metals.
That context explains some conspicuous omissions. Broer said he did not need a diver or a lightweight titanium watch for his current lifestyle, even though he owned tool watches including a Sea-Dweller, Marinemaster 300 and Seamaster. He sometimes wanted a watch for summer holidays and the pool, but left those models out. The exercise did not mean he had stopped wearing the rest of his collection.
The #fivewatchcollection trend began on Instagram; Broer credits Fratello photographer Morgan Saignes with starting it. Participants shared either five watches from their collection or five picks from a larger one. Broer stressed that his choices could have been different five years earlier or later—and that narrowing a collection to one, two or three watches can be harder still.

The five selections, and what each means to him
1. Rolex Day-Date 18238
Broer’s Day-Date is the familiar 18-karat yellow-gold configuration, with a champagne dial and President bracelet. He points to the double-quickset movement, which advances the day and date discs, and likes the brushed tops on the lugs of his particular example. He describes it as one of his most frequently worn watches.
His preferences were not fixed even within this model family: he had considered a white dial with gold Roman numerals for easier reading and had started looking at white-gold and platinum Day-Date models as well.

2. Omega Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary in Moonshine Gold
This is Broer’s emotional centerpiece. He recalls seeing the watch at Omega headquarters in Biel shortly before its March 2019 introduction. He initially dismissed it because of the price, then tried it on and ordered one. The model connects to the gold Speedmaster Professional gifted to NASA astronauts in 1969. Broer highlights its solid-gold dial with faceted onyx markers, lunar-meteorite caseback disc, caliber 3861 and Moonshine Gold movement finishing.
Broer says it became a daily watch and that, if limited to one, this is the watch he would keep. In his 2024 Fratello article, he gave €32,800 as its initial retail price when he was considering ordering it after the 2019 introduction; that is historical context, not a current price.

3. Omega Speedmaster Calibre 321
The steel Calibre 321 represents Broer’s collecting interest: the Speedmaster sparked his interest in watches, and it remains the model he collects. He values the watch’s relationship to the 1960s straight-lug Speedmaster. He also points to modern practical features—the sapphire crystal and ceramic bezel—and describes a dedicated atelier process in which one watchmaker handles the movement and the watch’s double assembly.
Broer’s 2024 article gives a 39.7 mm case diameter and states a price of €17,100 as “currently” at the time of writing. Those are the article’s dated claims, not independently verified current specifications or pricing.

4. Breguet Tradition 7027BA
Broer first thought he might choose a Breguet Classique 5157, but changed his mind after seeing a Tradition 7027 at a watch gathering. He describes the 7027BA as having a 37 mm gold case and visible movement-side dial architecture. His dark-blue lizard strap was chosen to match the movement screws. He says the 507 DR caliber’s design refers to Breguet subscription watches of the late 18th century.
In the 2024 article, Broer says the Tradition 7027 was introduced in 2005 and discontinued in 2016; he describes later Tradition models as larger, at 40 mm. His own example was produced in 2006, last serviced in 2012, and later sent to Breguet for an overhaul. These are details of his watch and the article’s account, not current service guidance.

5. Omega Constellation 168.010
This Constellation is the family-heirloom choice. Broer recounts that his grandfather bought it on February 6, 1969, following an earlier family connection: his great-grandfather bought a Constellation in August 1966. Broer describes his watch as gold-capped steel with a solid-gold bracelet, onyx hour markers and a quickset-date caliber 56. He still has the original papers bearing his grandfather’s name and address.
The watch’s significance comes from that family history. Broer also wonders whether the heirloom will carry the same meaning for his daughter—an uncertainty that makes this selection as much about inheritance as it is about the watch itself.

Across the five, Broer combines precious-metal dress watches with two Speedmasters and a family watch. Each selection has a different personal job: the Day-Date is a frequent wear, the Moonshine Gold Apollo 11 is his favorite, the Calibre 321 reflects his collecting focus, the Breguet offers a different expression of dress-watch design, and the Constellation carries family provenance.
That is a portrait of one collector at one point in time, not a ranking of the watches or advice that every collection needs these categories. Broer’s own account leaves room for changing tastes and for the watches he did not include.
