Fratello’s five-watch selection shows how Zenith’s El Primero reached well beyond Zenith: it powered watches from Rolex, Ebel, Movado and Panerai, sometimes in substantially modified form. The list, published by Jorg Weppelink on September 13, 2024, is a curated set of favorites—not a comprehensive ranking or a current price guide. Which one do you like best?

How the five watches compare

Watch El Primero connection Case and design Fratello’s approximate price estimate in 2024
Zenith El Primero A384 First-generation caliber 3019 PHC; Fratello reports 36,600 vibrations per hour and a 50-hour power reserve. 37 mm wide and 13 mm thick including the domed crystal; originally fitted with a Gay Frères ladder bracelet. €12,000–€25,000
Rolex Cosmograph Daytona ref. 16520 Rolex caliber 4030, derived from the El Primero and modified; Fratello reports its frequency was reduced to 28,800 vibrations per hour. Black- or white-dial versions; collector-recognized variants include “Patrizzi” and “Porcelain.” €17,000–€80,000, with the upper range associated with rarer dial variants.
Ebel Sport Classic Chronograph ref. 1134901 Early examples used Zenith 3019 PHC calibers; later movements included caliber 40.0 and, in subsequent years, caliber 400. 38 mm wide, 11 mm thick and 42 mm lug to lug; versions included full gold, two-tone and steel with a white-gold bezel. €2,500–€5,000
Movado El Primero Chronograph ref. 01.0180.434 Caliber 3019 PHC, from the period when Zenith and Movado shared ownership. 38 mm wide, 12 mm thick and 42 mm lug to lug; Zenith-branded, Movado-branded and dual-branded dial versions. €3,000–€5,000
Panerai Luminor Chrono PAM00121 Caliber OP IV, based on Zenith El Primero caliber 400Z. 2002 model with a 40 mm brushed titanium case, 15 mm thickness, 22 mm lug spacing and a 200 m depth rating. €5,000–€9,000

All price ranges are Fratello’s approximate estimates from 2024, not current verified prices or standardized, condition-adjusted valuations. The article does not establish a consistent basis for comparing the watches’ condition, so the figures are best read as period context rather than a ranking of value. What makes each watch distinctive?

Zenith El Primero A384: the original design and movement

The A384 is the most direct choice for someone who wants the El Primero in a Zenith. Fratello highlights its compact 37 mm case, domed crystal and original Gay Frères ladder bracelet alongside the first-generation 3019 PHC caliber. Vintage examples can also show age-related dial changes: the article notes that some panda-style dials have shifted toward cream with brown registers. That means the appearance of an individual watch may differ from a crisp black-and-white reference image.

Rolex Daytona ref. 16520: the most extensively modified lineage

The first automatic Daytona generation, produced from 1988 to 2000 according to Fratello, is not simply an El Primero in a Rolex case. Rolex’s caliber 4030 was derived from Zenith’s movement but modified: the article says Rolex reduced its frequency from the El Primero’s reported 36,600 to 28,800 vibrations per hour, removed the date complication, and replaced components including the escapement and balance system. Black and white dials, as well as variants collectors call “Patrizzi” and “Porcelain,” contribute to the reference’s range of appearances and its wide 2024 estimate.

Ebel Sport Classic Chronograph ref. 1134901: a changing movement story

Introduced in 1982, the Ebel pairs the Sport Classic design with several stages of El Primero-related movement use. Fratello reports that Ebel began with Zenith 3019 PHC calibers, moved to caliber 40.0 after El Primero production restarted in 1986, and used caliber 400 in later years. As a result, the reference’s movement identity depends on the specific watch and production period; buyers should verify the caliber of an individual example rather than infer it from the model name alone.

Movado ref. 01.0180.434: a shared-branding-era El Primero

This Movado comes from the period when Zenith and Movado were under shared ownership. Fratello describes examples with Zenith, Movado or combined branding on the dial, all associated with caliber 3019 PHC. The article says production is believed to have been only 500 pieces. That is a qualified estimate, not a confirmed production record, so it is a useful part of the model’s collector appeal but not an established count.

Panerai Luminor Chrono PAM00121: El Primero ancestry in titanium

The PAM00121 stands apart from the smaller steel and gold watches in the group with its brushed titanium case, 15 mm thickness and 200 m depth rating. Its OP IV caliber is described by Fratello as based on Zenith’s El Primero caliber 400Z. Production numbers are also presented cautiously: the article says Panerai apparently planned 1,500 pieces but produced no more than 250. Treat that as the article’s qualified account, not a definitive production record.

Which one should you pick?

  • For a Zenith-first choice: the A384 offers the most direct pairing of the El Primero name, the early 3019 PHC and the ladder-bracelet design.
  • For a Rolex interpretation: the 16520 is the clearest example of another manufacturer adapting the movement rather than using it unchanged.
  • For variety in materials and movement periods: the Ebel’s reported gold, two-tone and steel versions span several El Primero-related calibers.
  • For a less common-looking alternative: the Movado’s multiple dial-branding versions and qualified production estimate distinguish it from the better-known choices.
  • For a larger titanium chronograph: the Panerai offers the boldest dimensions in this selection and a distinct OP IV movement lineage.

Whichever appeals most, the 2024 euro ranges should not substitute for checking a particular watch’s condition, originality, service history and current asking price. The original article’s premise was that the movement’s story extends beyond its maker; as Weppelink put it, “This topic certainly sparked a search for any cool possible additions to our collections.”
