Fratello’s five classic Valjoux 72-powered picks are the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, Breitling Navitimer Pre-806, Heuer Carrera 2447, Universal Genève Compax “Nina Rindt” and “Evil Nina,” and Enicar Sherpa Graph. They share a chronograph movement family, but the references, dial variants, and movement revisions matter: a model name alone does not establish which caliber is inside a particular vintage watch.
What connects these five watches?
They are linked by the Valjoux 72, a hand-wound chronograph movement with a 12-hour totalizer. In Jorg Weppelink’s September 20, 2024 Fratello account, the movement’s lineage begins with Valjoux’s two-register caliber 23, introduced in 1916. That caliber had running seconds at 9 o’clock and a 30- or 45-minute counter at 3 o’clock. In 1938, Valjoux added a 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock to create the caliber 72. The history and model descriptions below follow that editorial account, rather than a manufacturer archive or specification sheet. Read the Fratello article.
Related versions include the Valjoux 72C, which adds a triple calendar, and the Valjoux 88, which adds a moonphase. The 726 and Rolex’s 727 are distinct later calibers, not interchangeable names for the 72.
| Caliber | Difference noted by Fratello | Frequency stated in the article |
|---|---|---|
| Valjoux 72 | 12-hour chronograph totalizer | 18,000 beats per hour, as the baseline in the article’s comparison with the 726 |
| Valjoux 726 | Later version with increased frequency | 21,600 beats per hour |
| Rolex Valjoux 727 | Rolex’s higher-frequency 72-derived caliber | 21,000 vibrations per hour |
The figures are those given in the 2024 article; its wording distinguishes beats per hour from vibrations per hour. Do not treat the 726’s and 727’s frequencies as the same.

Fratello’s five Valjoux 72-powered picks
1. Rolex Cosmograph Daytona
The first manual-winding Daytonas appeared in 1963, according to Fratello, initially using the Valjoux 72B or related derivatives. The early reference 6239 examples did not initially carry the Daytona name on the dial. The lineage continued through the Valjoux 722 and the higher-frequency Rolex 727; Fratello says 72-derived movements remained in use in the Daytona until 1988. Because the family spans multiple references and movement revisions, identify the individual watch’s reference and caliber rather than assuming every manual Daytona has an identical movement.
2. Breitling Navitimer “Pre-806”
Fratello dates the Navitimer’s introduction to 1954 and identifies early “Pre-806” examples as Valjoux 72-powered. Breitling switched to the Venus 178 the following year, making the early movement configuration a defining distinction for this selection. The article characterizes these watches as rare collector pieces; a Navitimer’s name alone does not establish that it is a Pre-806 or has a Valjoux 72.

3. Heuer Carrera reference 2447
The Carrera began in 1963. Fratello says all reference 2447 variants produced until 1970 used the Valjoux 72. Two dial versions it highlights are the silver or white 2447S and black 2447N. The suffix and dial are useful identifiers, but evaluate the actual reference and configuration rather than inferring originality from the dial color alone.
4. Universal Genève Compax: “Nina Rindt” and “Evil Nina”
Fratello dates production of these 36 mm steel Compax watches to 1964–1967 and describes both as Valjoux 72-powered. Reference 885.103/2 is the white-dial “Nina Rindt.” Reference 885.103/1 is the black-dial “Evil Nina,” with white registers and a red central chronograph hand. The reference numbers are the clearest distinction in the account; do not collapse the two nicknames into one dial variant.

5. Enicar Sherpa Graph
The Sherpa Graph debuted in 1960 and remained in production for about ten years, according to Fratello. The article describes a 40 mm case and a Valjoux 72 movement, with variations in dial and hand style over its production. Those changes make a single broad description insufficient to identify every Sherpa Graph. Fratello’s article also received a comment correcting the identification of a pictured watch as a “Jim Clark” version, so that specific identification should not be assumed from the article alone.
How to distinguish a particular watch or variant
The five selections demonstrate why reference-level identification matters: the Daytona spans several movement revisions; the Carrera 2447 has S and N dial variants; the Compax nicknames correspond to different references and dial colors; and Sherpa Graph examples changed over time. Before treating an example as one of these specific configurations, compare the individual watch’s movement, reference, and visible components with reliable documentation for that reference.

- High-Quality Material: Made from durable materials for long-lasting use.
- Movement: Confirm the caliber in the watch itself. Do not infer a Valjoux 72 solely from a model name when the model had other versions or later revisions.
- Reference and variant: Check the reference number and the corresponding dial configuration, especially for the Carrera 2447 and the two Compax variants.
- Originality and condition: Examine whether the dial, case, and hands are original to the stated configuration and assess their condition. The Fratello article does not provide a step-by-step authentication checklist.
- Provenance: Request the records or history available for the specific watch; provenance is one of the relevant comparison factors, but it does not by itself prove originality.
What Fratello’s 2024 price figures do—and do not—show
Weppelink’s September 20, 2024 article gives historical guidance for several of the picks. These are not current valuations: the article does not supply a current comparable-sales dataset or a consistent geography and currency-market methodology.
| Watch | Fratello’s 2024 article estimate |
|---|---|
| Breitling Navitimer Pre-806 | Starting around €20,000 |
| Heuer Carrera 2447 | Some examples below €5,000 at the low end; good-condition examples can reach €10,000 |
| Universal Genève Compax Nina Rindt | Roughly €15,000–€20,000 |
| Enicar Sherpa Graph | Later examples around €6,500 at the low end; early examples in good condition may reach €15,000 |
| Rolex Cosmograph Daytona | not stated in the September 20, 2024 Fratello article |
These ranges are best read as the article’s dated estimates, not as a basis for pricing a specific watch today. Condition, originality, reference, and provenance are material comparison points, and the figures do not establish the value of an individual example.
