Here, affordable means comparatively attainable within Rolex—not inexpensive for most buyers. The list is also not a ranking of the five cheapest references. Fratello published its selection and price estimates on November 15, 2024, so those euro figures are historical estimates, not current quotes.
What Fratello meant by “reasonably affordable”
Jorg Weppelink’s Fratello selection focuses on discontinued Rolex references that offer different ways into the brand’s history and design. The five watches vary substantially: the Air-King 5500 is a smaller vintage time-only watch; the Datejust 1601 adds a date; the Explorer II 16570 adds a second-time-zone function; and the Submariner 14060(M) is a 300 m-rated dive watch. The Explorer 114270 is the compact, time-only Explorer in the group. These are not interchangeable choices, and the least expensive example is not necessarily the best buy for a particular wearer.
All five are pre-owned watches. Their price and condition depend on factors such as originality, service history, bracelet condition, seller, location, and whether box and papers are included. Fratello’s November 2024 estimates are useful as a dated snapshot of its view at publication, not as a current market ranking.
The five references at a glance
| Reference | Case and function | Key details | Fratello estimate, November 15, 2024 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Explorer 114270 | 36 mm; time only | Solid end links; caliber 3130; produced from 2001 until the 39 mm Explorer 214270 succeeded it. | Starting around €5,000; good examples, particularly with box and papers, were described at higher prices. |
| Datejust 1601 | Case size not stated in the cited article; date | Pie-pan dial, fluted white-gold bezel, and Jubilee bracelet. Produced from 1959 to 1977; no quick-set date. Caliber 1565 was replaced by 1575 in 1965. | Roughly €3,500–€7,000, depending on condition and completeness. |
| Explorer II 16570 | 40 mm; second-time-zone function | Produced from 1989 to 2011, with black or white “Polar” dial options. Caliber 3185 was used until caliber 3186 arrived in 2007. | Roughly €6,000 to €10,000–€12,000, depending on condition. |
| Submariner 14060(M) | 40 mm; no date; 300 m depth rating | Aluminum bezel insert. The 14060 uses caliber 3000; the 14060M update, beginning in 1999, uses caliber 3130. | Starting around €7,000, with higher estimates for better-condition examples. |
| Air-King 5500 | 34 mm; time only | Produced from 1957 to 1989, with multiple dial variants and calibers 1520 or 1530. | Starting around €2,500; Fratello called it the most affordable pick. |
Reference details and estimates in this table come from Fratello’s November 15, 2024 article. It does not give a single like-for-like valuation across all five models.

How the watches differ in practice
Explorer 114270: the compact, straightforward choice
The 36 mm Explorer 114270 is the most direct option for someone who wants a time-only Rolex with a restrained design. Fratello highlights its solid end links and caliber 3130. Its size is smaller than the 40 mm Explorer II and Submariner in this group, making wrist fit an important personal consideration rather than a simple matter of model hierarchy.
Datejust 1601: vintage date display and classic styling
The 1601’s pie-pan dial, fluted white-gold bezel, and Jubilee bracelet give it a distinctly vintage character. Its date function is less convenient to set than that of later watches because it lacks a quick-set date. Fratello says the movement changed from caliber 1565 to 1575 in 1965, bringing a higher beat rate and hacking seconds. When comparing examples, identify the specific watch and movement rather than assuming every 1601 has the same configuration.

Explorer II 16570: a larger case and second time zone
The 40 mm Explorer II 16570 adds a second-time-zone function and comes with either a black dial or the white “Polar” dial. Its long production run includes a movement change: caliber 3185 preceded caliber 3186, introduced in 2007. A buyer weighing examples should confirm the watch’s configuration and condition, rather than treating the reference as one unchanging specification.
Submariner 14060(M): the no-date diver
The 14060(M) pairs a 40 mm case and 300 m depth rating with a date-free dial and aluminum bezel insert. The 14060’s caliber 3000 gives way to caliber 3130 in the 14060M update that began in 1999. The “M” distinction matters when identifying which movement generation an individual watch has.

Air-King 5500: the smallest and lowest-priced pick in Fratello’s list
At 34 mm, the Air-King 5500 is the smallest of the five by the case sizes supplied in Fratello’s article. It was made from 1957 to 1989 and appeared with multiple dial variants and either caliber 1520 or 1530. Its vintage age and variety make condition, authenticity, and the particular configuration central to evaluating an example.
How to read the price evidence
Fratello’s euro figures belong to its November 15, 2024 article and should not be presented as current prices. Later evidence is available for some references, but it uses different currencies, samples, and listing types, so it cannot establish a reliable current price order across all five watches.

What to check before choosing an example
Because these references are discontinued, the individual watch matters as much as the model name. Before comparing asking prices, check that the examples are genuinely comparable.
- Confirm the reference and configuration. Check the exact reference, movement generation, dial, bezel, and functions. This is especially relevant to the 14060 versus 14060M, the 16570’s movement change, and the multiple Air-King 5500 dial variants.
- Assess condition and originality. Look for clear disclosure of replaced or altered parts and the condition of the case, dial, bezel, and bracelet. A low asking price alone does not establish value.
- Ask about service history. Request available service records and clarify what is known about the watch’s maintenance. A seller’s documentation and the watch’s current condition should be evaluated together.
- Compare what is included. Box and papers can affect a listing’s price, but their presence does not substitute for checking authenticity, condition, or the seller’s terms.
- Compare prices on equal terms. Keep currency, country, seller type, included accessories, and whether a figure is an asking price or a completed sale in view. The cited later figures are not a uniform cross-reference comparison.
Fratello specifically cautions buyers of the Air-King 5500 to research condition and authenticity. For all five, a careful assessment of the actual watch is more useful than assuming a reference name guarantees a particular state or value.
