Fratello’s five picks for an Explorer II alternative in 2026 range from the €460 Seiko 5 Sports SSK023 to the €9,500 Grand Seiko SBGE285 Mist Flake. The selection focuses on watches with a fixed 24-hour bezel—a defining Explorer II cue—rather than rotating day/night bezels. These are editorial choices, not a comprehensive market ranking. Prices below are those stated in Fratello’s February 27, 2026 article, not verified current offers.
What makes an Explorer II alternative?
The Rolex Explorer II pairs a fixed 24-hour bezel with a second-time-zone display. That combination gives it a distinct look and a practical GMT function. The five watches Fratello selected retain the fixed-bezel idea in different ways, but vary in case size, thickness, movement and how their GMT hands work.
For a clearly bounded Rolex comparison, the official brochure cited here covers reference 216570: a 42 mm Oystersteel case, fixed 24-hour graduated bezel, second-time-zone display and 100 m water resistance. Its listed calibre 3187 and approximately 48-hour power reserve also apply to that reference, not automatically to later Explorer II models. Rolex Explorer II reference 216570 brochure

How to choose among Fratello’s five picks
Grand Seiko SBGE285 Mist Flake: the luxury Spring Drive option
The Mist Flake combines a pale textured dial and titanium case with Spring Drive. Its 41 mm diameter is not the largest figure in the selection, but its reported 48.3 mm length and 13.9 mm thickness are important fit considerations. Fratello describes its GMT as flyer-style and reports a 72-hour reserve and accuracy of ±15 seconds per month.
Tudor Black Bay Pro: the Explorer II-inspired choice
The Black Bay Pro most explicitly echoes the Explorer II’s fixed-steel-bezel design, while using Tudor’s own dial and handset character. At 39 mm, it is smaller in diameter than the reference 216570 baseline, but its reported 14.6 mm thickness is the thickest among these five. Fratello identifies its MT5652 as COSC-certified and its GMT as flyer-style.
Christopher Ward C63 Sealander GMT: two sizes and a slimmer profile
The C63 is offered in 36 mm and 39 mm versions, making it the only pick here with two reported case-size options. Fratello lists the 36 mm as 11.15 mm thick and 43 mm long, and the 39 mm as 11.85 mm thick with a 45.8 mm lug-to-lug measurement. Both are listed at €1,350 on a Bader bracelet. Its caller-style GMT is less convenient for resetting local time while traveling than a flyer-style mechanism.
Seiko 5 Sports SSK023: the entry-price pick
At Fratello’s listed €460, the SSK023 is the lowest-priced watch in the selection. Its field-watch dial and fixed 24-hour bezel give the Explorer II idea a more utilitarian expression. The reported dimensions are 39.4 mm across and 13.6 mm thick, with a 47.9 mm lug-to-lug length. Fratello names the calibre 4R34 and a 41-hour reserve but does not specify its GMT adjustment style in the article.

Nodus × Raven TrailTrekker Clay: a darker microbrand collaboration
The TrailTrekker Clay distinguishes itself with a dark coated case and green-gray palette. Fratello reports a 39.5 mm diameter, 46.6 mm length and 11.8 mm thickness, along with a flyer-style GMT using the Miyota 9075 and a 42-hour reserve. Its stated price is US$900.

“Flyer” and “caller” describe how a GMT watch handles time-zone changes. A flyer-style movement lets the wearer adjust the local-hour hand independently, making it easier to set local time after landing while keeping the other time indication aligned. A caller-style GMT is less convenient for that use because changing local time is not as direct. In Fratello’s descriptions, the Grand Seiko SBGE285 and Tudor Black Bay Pro are flyer-style; the C63 Sealander GMT is caller-style. The article also describes the Nodus × Raven as flyer-style and does not specify the SSK023’s adjustment style.
Fit, price and design: what to compare before buying
- Fit: Compare thickness and length or lug-to-lug alongside diameter. The C63 36 mm is the thinnest option reported; the Tudor is the thickest. Measurements alone cannot determine comfort on an individual wrist.
- Budget: The Seiko is the entry-price choice, while the Christopher Ward and Nodus × Raven are lower-cost mechanical alternatives to the Tudor and Grand Seiko. The prices are in two currencies and are publication-date figures, not live quotes.
- Bezel and dial: All five are presented as fixed-bezel alternatives, but their visual character differs. The Seiko leans into a field-watch layout; the Nodus × Raven uses a dark coated finish; the Tudor has the most direct Explorer II-inspired design framing.
- Movement: Fratello’s reported reserves range from 41 hours for the Seiko to 72 hours for the Grand Seiko. Treat these as article-stated specifications, not comparative test results.
Why the Explorer II remains a specific reference point
The Explorer II’s fixed 24-hour bezel is not merely a styling choice: Rolex’s brochure for reference 216570 explains that the function helps distinguish day from night, including in environments such as caves or polar regions during summer. The same brochure describes a second time zone and a rapidly adjustable independent hour hand. That context helps explain why fixed-bezel GMTs—not simply any travel watch—are the focus of these alternatives. Rolex Explorer II reference 216570 brochure
Fratello’s list was published on February 27, 2026, and its figures should be read in that context. The Seiko Alpinist GMT series is reported as discontinued in 2025, so it should not be treated as a current alternative without checking availability and model status.
