They are an editorial selection, not an objective ranking or a guide to watches currently available at retail. The list was published by Jorg Weppelink on April 18, 2025, after Rolex’s 2025 novelties were announced.
What makes these Rolex stone-dial watches distinctive?
The appeal is the contrast between a familiar Rolex sports-watch case and a dial whose color or pattern comes from a distinctive material. Case metal, bezel, dial texture and hour markers all affect the overall look—and how easy the watch may be to read. Fratello’s selection spans models described in its article as rare historical pieces as well as more recent designs. Its order is not a measured ranking.

Fratello’s five Rolex sports watches with stone dials
1. Cosmograph Daytona ref. 16516 with turquoise
Fratello describes five unique platinum “Zenith Daytona” watches commissioned in the late 1990s by then-Rolex CEO Patrick Heiniger, each with a different special dial. For the turquoise example, the article reports that Sotheby’s inspection found natural turquoise on the dial’s reverse after removal; a lacquered front hides the stone’s usual visible grain. Fratello gives the case size as 40 mm and identifies the movement as calibre 4030, based on Zenith’s El Primero calibre 400. These historical and technical details are Fratello’s reporting, not independently established here.
2. Submariner ref. 16618 with lapis lazuli
This yellow-gold Submariner pairs a bright blue lapis lazuli dial with a matching gold case and bracelet. Fratello says the reference debuted in 1986 and remained in production until 2008, using calibre 3135. The article estimates that just over 20,000 examples were produced; that is an article-reported estimate, not a verified Rolex production statistic.
#1 Best Overall
- Stainless Steel case with Black Resin Band
- Black Dial with date window at 3 O'clock
- Luminous markers and hour hands; sweep second hand
- Anti-reverse bezel
- Water-resistant to 200 M (660 feet)
3. GMT-Master II ref. 126719BLRO with meteorite
The white-gold “Pepsi” GMT-Master II combines a red-and-blue bezel with a meteorite dial. The dial gives the watch a different visual emphasis from the bezel’s strong color contrast. Fratello described the reference as part of the current collection in April 2025; that dated description does not confirm its availability now.
4. Yacht-Master 42 ref. 226659 with falcon’s eye
Fratello identifies this white-gold Yacht-Master 42 as a 2022 introduction with a falcon’s-eye dial. It notes that examples can differ in dark-blue tone and in the visibility of the stone’s stripes, so two dials need not look identical. The article said the dial was no longer an option on Rolex’s website when it appeared in April 2025; check Rolex’s catalog for current status rather than treating that observation as current.
Rank #2
- Stainless steel case 43mm diameter x 12mm thick; Black dial; Luminous hands and hour markers

5. GMT-Master II ref. 126715CHNR with tiger iron
This Everose-gold GMT-Master II pairs a tiger-iron dial with a black-and-brown Cerachrom bezel. Fratello describes tiger iron as a combination of tiger’s eye, red jasper and hematite, and notes that dial color varies. The article also points to tiger iron on yellow-gold ref. 126718GRNR, which has a black-and-gray bezel insert and Jubilee bracelet.
How to compare the five designs
- Watch style: The Daytona is a chronograph, the Submariner is a dive-watch design, and the GMT-Master II and Yacht-Master 42 are distinct sports-watch styles. Consider which design suits your intended use before focusing on the dial.
- Metal and bezel: Platinum, yellow gold, white gold and Everose gold frame the materials differently. The GMT models’ colored bezels add another strong design element, while the lapis Submariner’s gold-on-blue combination is more direct.
- Stone and pattern: Turquoise, lapis lazuli, falcon’s eye and tiger iron are described as stone dials; meteorite offers a separate material and appearance. Natural-stone examples can vary in tone and visible pattern, particularly the falcon’s-eye and tiger-iron dials.
- Legibility and dial furniture: Look beyond the material’s color: compare the contrast of hands and markers against the dial, and consider whether the dial’s pattern competes with the information you need to read quickly.
- Availability: A reference’s place in a past collection does not establish current retail availability. Rare or discontinued examples may be encountered through the secondary market or at auction, but this list does not verify present stock or seller authenticity.
Are these Rolex watches still in the catalog?
Fratello’s availability comments are dated to its April 18, 2025 article. It described the meteorite GMT-Master II as current at that time and said the falcon’s-eye Yacht-Master dial was no longer listed. Those statements should not be read as a live catalog check. Rolex’s official model finder is the appropriate place to check the catalog; a catalog listing also does not establish local stock.

Rolex’s official 2026 newsroom provides broader evidence that stone-inspired dials remain part of the brand’s designs: it describes the Oyster Perpetual 28 in yellow gold with a green stone lacquer dial and the Oyster Perpetual 34 in Everose gold with a blue stone lacquer dial. These are not sports-watch picks from Fratello’s five, and they do not establish that any of the five listed references is currently offered. See Rolex’s Oyster Perpetual 28 and 34 announcement.

Rolex’s official 2019 presentation for Day-Date 36 models described decorative-stone dials including pink opal and turquoise, alongside calibre 3255. This offers historical context for the brand’s use of stone dials, but does not show that those specific Day-Date configurations remain in the current catalog. The presentation is available in Rolex’s Baselworld 2019 Oyster new models document.
