Those sightings make the “celebrity beater” label an appealing shorthand—not proof that celebrities generally choose G-Shocks for everyday wear.
What G-Shock did Eminem wear?
In a December 6, 2013 announcement, Casio introduced the GD-X6900MNM-1, a collaboration with Eminem for G-Shock’s 30th anniversary. Casio said Eminem had appeared wearing G-Shock in music videos and performances, and described the watch as a personalized version of the revamped GD-X6900. That release establishes a documented collaboration and Casio’s account of his public association with the brand; it does not establish a current endorsement or the watch’s present availability. Casio’s announcement uses the model string GD-X6900MNM-1.
Casio’s 6900 series history records an Eminem collaboration as GD-X6900MM-1. Because the chronology and press release use different reference strings, they should not be silently treated as identical. Casio’s series history provides the chronology; the press release identifies the announced collaboration as GD-X6900MNM-1.
What watch does Spike Lee wear?
Time+Tide identifies Spike Lee with an orange DW-6900SC-4D and connects its colors with his New York Knicks fandom. This is a secondary publication’s identification of a photographed watch, rather than a Casio record or evidence of Lee’s everyday preference. Its account is useful as a celebrity sighting, not as a measure of how often he wore the watch or how it performed over time. Time+Tide’s article gives the model identification.

Why does the 6900 look so recognizable?
The 6900 family began in 1995; Casio identifies the DW-6900-1V as its first model. Its series history describes the rounded case, three circular display graphics, and a prominent front button. Casio says the circular design helps arrange elements efficiently for shock-resistant construction. That is the brand’s design rationale, not a comparative engineering test. The look works well as a recognizable visual signature: the round case and three circles make the watch easy to distinguish in a performance, photograph, or street-style image. The family’s celebrity associations are therefore as much about legible design as about the practical appeal of a rugged digital watch.

What does a 6900 offer as an everyday watch?
One concrete example is Casio’s DW-6900-1VH listing. Casio marks that exact product page “Old Model,” so its specifications should not be assumed to describe every 6900 or imply current availability.

Is a G-Shock a good beater watch?
G-Shock’s purpose is closely tied to durability. Casio’s brand account says the line began with a challenge to make a watch that would not break when dropped. That history helps explain why a shock-resistant digital model such as the listed DW-6900-1VH can make sense for everyday use, especially for someone who wants a resin watch with timing and alarm functions. It is the brand’s origin story and design goal, not proof that any watch is indestructible. Casio’s brand concept describes that origin.
“Beater” is a practical label, not a guarantee. The relevant question is whether the exact model’s size, functions, water-resistance rating, and materials suit the wearer’s routine. A model marked old may also be harder to find new, and specifications for one reference should not be transferred to another.

What the celebrity label does—and doesn’t—show
Eminem’s collaboration and the Spike Lee sighting illustrate two different kinds of association: a brand-announced partnership and a publication-identified watch. Together they support calling the 6900 a visible celebrity watch. They do not establish a representative trend, a count of celebrity owners, or a general preference for G-Shock as an everyday watch. The “beater of choice” idea is best read as colorful cultural shorthand rather than a measured claim.
