Start with the exact model—not just a family name—because features and water-resistance ratings vary across the range.
Start with the shape and display you want
Casio’s US catalogue spans classic digital watches, analog-digital designs, sensor models and metal-built options. Shape is a practical first filter: it narrows the field before you compare charging, materials and price. Casio dates the first G-SHOCK to 1983 and the 2100 series to 2019. Casio’s guide to iconic styles shows the 5600/5000 square, the octagonal 2100, and other recognizable families such as the 6900 and 110.
Choose a square 5600 or 5000 for classic digital utility
The 5600 and 5000 families share the square silhouette, but their construction differs. Casio says the 5000 series continues the original stainless-steel case, while the 5600 uses a resin case; some 5600 models add carbon-fiber or glass-fiber reinforcement. Casio notes that the resin format can accommodate features such as Bluetooth and Tough Solar. The family guide states a 200-meter water-resistance specification for the 5600/5000 series, but check the exact model page before applying that figure to a particular watch. Read Casio’s 5600/5000 feature guide.
Choose a 2100 for an octagonal analog-digital design
The 2100 family ranges from resin builds to steel-bezel and full-metal versions, with solar and Bluetooth available on some variants. The nickname “CasiOak” can point to the general shape, but it does not specify a watch’s materials or functions. Compare the model code and product page rather than assuming every 2100 has the same feature set. Casio’s 2100 lineup separates the GA2100, GAB2100, GM2100, GBM2100, GMB2100 and GMAS2100 families.

Compare materials and fit by exact model
Case and band construction affects the look and feel you are buying. A resin watch prioritizes a different style and material experience from a steel-bezel or full-metal option; reinforced resin is another distinct construction. Family names alone are not enough to identify which one a listing describes, so confirm the case and band materials in the model specifications.
Fit also needs an individual-model check. Casio describes the GMAS2100 as smaller than the GA2100, making it a family to consider if the regular 2100 feels too large. Compare each watch’s stated case dimensions and band fit with a watch you already wear, or try it on where possible. A smaller family designation is a useful starting point, not a substitute for checking the actual dimensions. See the 2100 variants.

Decide whether solar, radio timekeeping or Bluetooth matters
These are separate features, not guarantees attached to a series name. Identify the convenience you want, then verify it on the exact model page:
- Tough Solar: choose a model that lists solar charging if reducing routine battery changes is a priority. Solar charging does not mean every watch in a family is solar-powered.
- Radio-controlled timekeeping: a compatible watch can receive time signals where service is available. Check the model’s listed reception feature and whether it suits your location.
- Bluetooth: select a model that explicitly lists smartphone connectivity if you want that function. Bluetooth and radio signal reception are different ways of supporting time adjustment, and one does not imply the other.
- Basic battery-powered timekeeping: if you do not need connectivity or solar charging, a simpler model may fit your priorities; confirm its power source and functions before purchase.
The GW-M5610-1 is a specific square option that Casio lists with Tough Solar, Multiband 6 radio signal reception and 20-bar water resistance. Treat that combination as a specification of the GW-M5610-1, not of every square G-SHOCK. Check Casio’s GW-M5610-1 listing.

Match water resistance to the way you will use the watch
G-SHOCK water-resistance labels are not interchangeable. Casio’s catalogue distinguishes ISO 200m submersion, ratings of up to 20 bar, up to 10 bar, up to 5 bar, and day-to-day water resistance. Check the exact model’s stated category and follow its instructions for the activities you have in mind; do not infer one model’s rating from another watch’s appearance or family name. Browse Casio’s US G-SHOCK catalogue.
For outdoor sensors, check the functions and the durability claim separately
If you need measurements such as compass, altitude, barometric pressure or temperature, look for the sensor functions named on the individual model page. Casio’s MIL-STD-810 page lists the GW-9400-1 with Triple Sensor, Tough Solar and Multiband 6, and the GG-B100XM-1A with Quad Sensor and Bluetooth. These are distinct feature combinations; confirm the exact specifications before choosing between them. Casio’s MIL-STD-810 information.

Casio says five specific models—GG-B100XM-1A, GW-9400-1, DW-5600UBB-1, GA-2100-1A1 and GBD-200-1—were tested by Element, an independent testing and certification laboratory in Boxborough, Massachusetts, under tests defined by U.S. Department of Defense MIL-STD-810. Casio describes the program as covering 12 environmental tests and simulated environmental and mechanical conditions. This is a model-specific account of testing, not evidence that every G-SHOCK was tested, or that the watches are military-issued or endorsed. See Casio’s description of the tests and named models.

| If your priority is… | Start by comparing… | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Classic square digital style | 5600 and 5000 models | Resin versus stainless-steel case, reinforcement, charging, timekeeping and the exact model’s water rating. |

Check current US pricing and availability before buying
Casio’s US catalogue is a useful place to filter current listings and compare exact specifications, but catalogue details, prices and stock can change. Verify the current price, availability, model code and feature list at the time you buy. A higher material tier or a longer feature list is not automatically a better match if it adds something you will not use.
