For reading exact time and using functions directly, a digital-only G-SHOCK is the simpler choice. An analog-digital G-SHOCK gives you hands and an LCD on one dial, which suits people who like a quick analog glance, but on some models the hands cover part of the LCD, and some combined models need separate analog and digital time setting. Those conclusions come from Casio’s official operation guides and feature descriptions. No side-by-side usability test has been published that compares the two types, so treat the verdict as a reasoned reading of the features rather than measured user experience.
How the two types compare at a glance
The table below sets out the axes that matter for ease of use. Each cell reflects what the cited manual documents, and the last column notes how far that evidence reaches.
| Axis | Digital-only | Analog-digital | Evidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading exact time | Numeric digital time display. | Hour and minute hands plus an LCD for digital information. | Casio’s manuals document the display types, not reading speed. Operation Guide 5694 and Operation Guide 5674. |
| Reading LCD information | Nothing physical sits over the display. | Hands can cross the LCD on some designs. | Obstruction is design-specific; check the model’s layout. |
| Hand shift | Not applicable. | Offered on some modules only, such as 5674 and 5724. | Not stated for every analog-digital model. See the 5724 hand-shift page. |
| Time setting | Digital setting procedure in the operation guide. | Some models use separate digital and analog setting procedures. | The separate-setting example is module 5574, described in its operation guide PDF. |
| Controls and modes | Buttons and mode navigation must be learned. | Same need; layout varies by module. | Use the manual for the specific model; no line-wide claim is supported. |
| Overall ease | Likely simpler for clear numeric reading and direct function use. | Likely suits people who value hands and accept a busier display. | Judgment from documented features, not from comparative user testing. |
Digital-only: the most direct way to read exact time
A digital-only G-SHOCK shows the time as numbers, and nothing on the dial competes with the display. Casio’s operation guides describe digital timekeeping and a range of watch functions, but the exact feature set depends on the module. Before buying, read the function list in the manual for the specific model, because two digital-only G-SHOCKs can differ in what their modes do even when their faces look alike.
Digital-only does not mean no learning curve. You still need to understand which button changes the mode, which one changes the setting, and how to return to the timekeeping screen. Those steps are the real cost of ease of use on any G-SHOCK.

Analog-digital: two ways to read time on one face
An analog-digital model combines hour and minute hands with an LCD. The hands give a fast analog reading of the time, and the LCD carries digital information. Casio’s Operation Guide 5674 documents this combination, including mode navigation and the hands-and-LCD layout, and it is the clearest example of why the category needs model-level checking.
The manuals establish that the combination exists. They do not measure whether readers find it easier or harder than a digital-only watch, so any preference for the analog-digital design is a matter of how you read time, not a proven gain in usability.

When the hands get in the way: hand shift
The main usability trade-off in analog-digital models is that the hands can cover LCD information. Casio addresses this on some modules with a hand-shift function. In the Module 5724 guide, Casio says hand shift moves the analog hands out of the way so display information is easier to see, and the guide explains how to activate it and how to return the hands to their normal position. The Operation Guide 5674 also describes a button operation that shifts the hands for easier reading of the digital display.
Hand shift is not a universal feature. Confirm it in the manual for the exact model before assuming the hands will clear the display when you need it.

Setting the time on combined models
Some analog-digital models keep analog and digital timekeeping separate. Operation Guide 5574 states that the watch has separate digital and analog timekeeping, with separate procedures for setting each one. It also tells the user to adjust the analog time if it does not match the digital display. That is a real extra step, and it is a point where a combined model can be less straightforward than a digital-only one, but it applies to that module rather than to every analog-digital G-SHOCK.
A checklist for choosing a specific model
- Check the operation guide for whether the model has hand shift, and read how it is activated and reset.
- Look at the LCD layout in the manual to see which information the hands would cover in their default position.
- Confirm whether time setting is a single procedure or separate digital and analog procedures.
- Review the mode navigation section for the functions you use every day, such as timekeeping and alarms.
- For digital-only models, check the timekeeping display format options. Casio’s Module 3506 guide describes a basic watch-only screen and options that pair the current time with other information.
What the evidence does and does not establish
The sources are Casio’s instructional operation guides and feature pages. They describe what each module does and how to operate it, which is enough to compare feature-level ease of use. They do not include comparative usability testing, named statistics on reading speed, or user satisfaction figures, so no such claims appear in this article. Feature sets change between models and over time, so the manual for the exact model you are considering should always take precedence over any category-level generalization.
