The key distinction is not the shared “200-meter” shorthand: Casio identifies Frogman as ISO-standard 200-meter diving-water-resistant, while the Mudman GW-9500 is rated at 20 bar, a general water-resistance rating that is not the same claim.
Frogman vs. Mudman at a glance
| Decision factor | Frogman | Mudman |
|---|---|---|
| Designed for | Diving-oriented use; Casio identifies the collection as having ISO-standard 200-meter diving water resistance. | Mud- and dust-resistant outdoor use. The GW-9500 adds ABC sensors. |
| Water-resistance claim | ISO-standard 200-meter diving water resistance, stated for the collection and cited models. Casio water-resistance guidance | The GW-9500 is rated at 20 bar. This is not automatically an ISO professional dive-watch rating. Casio GW-9500 specifications |
| Standout features | Depending on reference: dive-time measurement, surface-interval display, dive logs, and tide graph; selected models add solar charging, Bluetooth, or radio-controlled timekeeping. | GW-9500: compass, barometer, altimeter, thermometer, sunrise/sunset display, solar power, Multiband 6, and duplex LCD. |
| Best fit | Scuba and dive-oriented use, or a preference for Frogman’s dive design and functions. | Hiking, outdoor work, muddy conditions, or a need for ABC sensors. |
Why Frogman’s diving rating is different
Casio distinguishes its general 20-bar water-resistance standard from a watch specifically designed and tested for diving. A pressure-based 20-bar or 200-meter designation on a general G-Shock does not mean the watch is certified for scuba diving or that it should be taken to that depth. Casio recommends an ISO 200-meter Frogman for scuba use. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model and intended activity. Casio’s water-resistance guidance

That distinction matters in this comparison: the GW-9500’s 20-bar specification is not equivalent to Frogman’s ISO diving-water-resistance claim. Shared numbers do not establish shared certification or intended use.
What Frogman offers
Frogman is Casio’s diving-oriented G-Shock line. Its design and function set vary by reference, so treat the model listing—not the family name—as the source of truth for a particular watch.

Example: GWF-A1000APF
Casio lists ISO 200-meter water resistance, dive-time measurement, surface-interval display, diving logs, a tide graph, Tough Solar, Bluetooth smartphone link, and radio-controlled timekeeping for the GWF-A1000APF. Those specifications belong to that reference; they should not be assumed for every Frogman. Casio GWF-A1000APF specifications
Design and history
Casio says Frogman was introduced in 1993 and describes the asymmetrical case as intended to avoid restricting wrist movement underwater. In a 2023 announcement about an MR-G Frogman launch, Casio described that watch as ISO 6425-certified and rated to 200 meters; that dated announcement concerns the MR-G release, not current prices or availability. What Mudman offers
Mudman emphasizes protection against mud and dust for outdoor use. Its features differ by generation and reference: the ABC capabilities of the GW-9500 are not a safe assumption for every watch bearing the Mudman name.

Other Mudman references
The G9000 series has mud, shock, and water resistance, but Casio says it does not have the ABC features found on the GW-9500. If a compass, altitude readings, or barometric information is essential, verify those functions on the exact reference before buying. Casio Mudman collection
Casio’s history entry identifies the DW-8400, introduced in 1995, as a second G-Shock model using a mud-resistant structure. That milestone is useful context for the line, but it does not establish the feature set of present-day Mudman models. Casio Mudman collection history

Which one should you choose?
Choose Frogman if you dive
For scuba diving, start with Frogman’s stated ISO diving-water-resistance and then check the exact model’s dive functions and display. If you want a tide graph, Bluetooth, solar power, or radio timekeeping, confirm that the particular reference includes it; family-level names alone do not guarantee those extras.

Compare exact references before purchase
- Confirm the water-resistance wording and intended activity, rather than comparing only a “200-meter” figure.
- Check whether the display is analog, digital, or a combination, and whether the model has the functions you will use.
