Casio’s G-SHOCK MRG-D5000 Blue Sapphire is an all-sapphire interpretation of the square MR-G, limited to 20 watches worldwide. Casio says the special multi-part construction is designed to protect sapphire from impact; UK watch publications report a price of £67,000. The planned worldwide release date is December 1, 2026.
What is the £67,000 sapphire G-SHOCK?
The MRG-D5000 is the Blue Rose Project’s most ambitious watch: Casio describes it as its first MR-G crafted directly in sapphire crystal. The project takes its name from the blue rose, which Casio uses as a symbol of making the seemingly impossible possible and connects to G-SHOCK’s challenge-oriented identity. [Casio Japan]
Casio Japan announced the watch on October 1, 2026, and lists December 1, 2026 as its planned worldwide release date. The edition is limited to 20 pieces worldwide. [Casio Japan product page] [Casio Japan announcement]
The £67,000 figure is reported by UK publications T3 and WatchPro. In the US, Casio America values each of six planned watches at $80,000. Those figures refer to different markets and sources; they should not be treated as directly comparable retail prices or converted as though tax and market terms were identical. How did Casio make a sapphire G-SHOCK shock-resistant?
Sapphire is exceptionally hard but can be vulnerable to impact, so the design challenge was not simply to substitute sapphire for metal. Casio Japan describes a screw-free, multi-part structure that uses blue sapphire crystal across the bezel. Casio America says it analyzed the force transmitted to the sapphire during impact and developed a structure intended to protect the material. [Casio Japan announcement] [Casio America]
T3 reports that development took eight years and that the construction approach drew inspiration from kigumi, traditional Japanese timber joinery. T3 also reports that sapphire ingots take months to grow, after which sections are selected for suitable colour and transparency and shaped into components. Those are reported development details, not independent impact-test results. [T3]
