The Galaxy Watch8 is a substantial generational upgrade over the Galaxy Watch4, but “everything has changed” goes too far. Samsung’s specifications show a newer processor, more memory and storage, a thinner case, larger batteries, updated software and additional wellness features. Both generations still cover smartwatch basics such as health sensors, GPS, NFC and Android-phone pairing. Whether it is worth upgrading depends on your phone, the features you want and the price of the specific Watch8 model.
Samsung announced the Watch8 on July 9, 2025, with general availability beginning July 25, 2025. The comparison below uses Samsung’s Watch4 Wi-Fi specifications, so LTE and regional variants may differ.
Galaxy Watch 8 vs Watch 4: what changed?
The biggest differences are the Watch8’s newer hardware and software generation, doubled listed storage, revised displays, slimmer case and expanded wellness feature set. The figures here are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance or battery-life test results.
| Specification | Galaxy Watch4 Wi-Fi | Galaxy Watch8 |
|---|---|---|
| Generation | Introduced in the August 2021 generation, according to Samsung’s company report. Samsung Watch4 Wi-Fi datasheet | Announced July 9, 2025. Samsung announcement |
| Processor | Exynos W920, 5nm, dual-core. Samsung Watch4 Wi-Fi datasheet | Exynos W1000, 3nm, five-core. Samsung announcement |
| Memory and storage | 1.5GB RAM and 16GB storage. Samsung Watch4 Wi-Fi datasheet | 2GB memory and 32GB storage. Samsung announcement |
| Software | Wear OS powered by Samsung. Samsung Watch4 Wi-Fi datasheet | Wear OS 6 with One UI 8 Watch; Samsung highlights Gemini, Multi-Info Tiles and Now Bar. Samsung announcement |
| Case depth | 9.8mm for the listed Wi-Fi models. Samsung Watch4 Wi-Fi datasheet | 8.6mm. Samsung announcement |
The processor specifications indicate a newer design, but they do not establish how much faster the Watch8 feels in everyday use. The same applies to battery life: capacity figures are not a controlled runtime comparison.

How do the sizes, displays and batteries compare?
Both generations come in 40mm and 44mm sizes, but the Watch8 has larger listed displays and higher battery capacity in each size. Samsung’s quoted configurations are not identical across every regional or LTE model.
| Size | Watch4 Wi-Fi display | Watch8 display | Watch4 Wi-Fi battery | Watch8 typical battery capacity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 40mm | 1.2-inch, 396 × 396 pixels | 1.34-inch, 438 × 438 pixels | 247mAh | 325mAh |
| 44mm | 1.4-inch, 450 × 450 pixels | 1.47-inch, 480 × 480 pixels | 361mAh | 435mAh |
Watch4 figures are from Samsung’s August 2021 Wi-Fi datasheet; Watch8 display and typical battery figures are from Samsung’s July 2025 announcement. Samsung says actual Watch8 battery life varies with usage, model and network. These specifications support saying the Watch8 has more battery capacity, not promising a particular increase in hours between charges.

What new software and wellness features does Watch8 add?
Software and interaction
The Watch8 ships with Wear OS 6 and One UI 8 Watch. Samsung highlights Gemini interaction, Multi-Info Tiles and Now Bar. The Watch4 datasheet describes its software as Wear OS powered by Samsung; it does not provide a like-for-like feature list for the current Watch8 software.
Wellness features
Samsung lists Energy Score, Bedtime Guidance, Antioxidant Index, running coaching and vascular-load-related monitoring among Watch8’s wellness features. The Watch4 datasheet lists optical heart-rate, electrical heart and bioelectrical impedance sensors. Watch8 uses Samsung BioActive sensors and includes temperature sensing.

Feature availability can depend on market and paired phone. Samsung cautions that health information accessed through the device or application should not be treated as medical advice; a sensor reading or wellness feature is not a diagnosis.
Do connectivity and durability change?
The Watch8 announcement lists Bluetooth 5.3, 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, NFC, and L1+L5 dual-frequency GPS. LTE is available only on LTE models. Samsung’s Watch4 datasheet covers the Wi-Fi model and lists Bluetooth 5.0, 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, NFC and GPS.

For durability, the Watch4 Wi-Fi datasheet lists 5ATM, IP68 and MIL-STD-810G; Samsung lists 5ATM, IP68 and MIL-STD-810H for Watch8. These are manufacturer specifications for the cited configurations, not a claim that the watches are interchangeable in every use or that they have identical regional variants.

| Watch series | Minimum Android version | Minimum phone memory | iOS support |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Watch4 | Android 6.0 | 1.5GB or more | No |
| Galaxy Watch8 | Android 12.0 | 1.5GB or more | No |
Samsung notes that an individual phone model may still be incompatible, so check the specific device rather than relying on its Android version alone. The higher minimum for Watch8 can rule it out for owners of older Android phones.
Is the Galaxy Watch 8 worth upgrading from Watch 4?
Watch8 is the more compelling choice if you want its newer software generation, more onboard storage, updated connectivity or additional wellness features—and your phone meets the compatibility requirements. A Watch4 that still does what you need may not justify replacement on specifications alone: compare the actual current Watch8 price or trade-in offer with the particular feature you expect to gain.
Before choosing, check these factors:
- Phone compatibility: Verify the exact phone model against Samsung’s requirements.
- Fit and screen: Choose between 40mm and 44mm based on wrist fit and display preference.
- Connectivity: Decide whether Bluetooth/Wi-Fi is enough or whether you need an LTE model.
- Feature availability: Confirm that any desired wellness feature is supported in your market and with your paired phone.
- Condition and cost: Consider how well your Watch4 works and compare current prices or trade-in terms. Samsung’s US smartwatch comparison page is a lineup reference; prices and offers can change.
Are Watch4 and Watch8 still receiving updates?
Samsung Japan’s firmware table, updated August 24, 2026, lists model-specific entries including Watch4 standard Wi-Fi (June 22, 2026), Watch4 LTE (August 20, 2026), Watch8 standard (July 6, 2026) and Watch8 LTE (July 9, 2026). Those entries show updates listed for those models in Japan on those dates. They do not establish a future support end date or a global rollout schedule. Check Samsung’s Japan firmware information page for its model-specific table.
