Galaxy Watch Ultra Gets Another Battery-Related Software Update—but What Does It Fix?

The Galaxy Watch Ultra’s August 2024 firmware update targeted battery charging stability, but Samsung did not promise longer runtime. Here’s what changed and what owners should know now.

The Galaxy Watch Ultra update reported on August 14, 2024, was real, but its documented target was battery charging stability—not a measured increase in battery life. Build L705FXXU1AXG2 was reported as an approximately 175MB download rolling out across the United States, Europe, and Asia. Samsung did not publish a runtime improvement, identify the exact charging fault, or promise to resolve every battery-drain complaint.

This is now a historical update story. As of August 18, 2026, Samsung’s latest international firmware listing is L705FXXS3BZF4, released July 14, 2026, with the July 5 security patch. That listing describes security improvements, not another battery-performance fix.

What the August 2024 update changed

PhoneArena reported the update for the original Galaxy Watch Ultra, including the SM-L705F model family and related carrier variants. The reported firmware was L705FXXU1AXG2, with a download size of approximately 175MB. Availability was initially reported in the United States and was later noted across Europe and Asia.

Samsung’s changelog referred to improvements to battery charging stability and overall device stability. It did not provide a quantified battery-life gain, a list of specific charging bugs, or an explanation of whether the update changed charging speed, battery-percentage reporting, charging cutoffs, or idle drain. PhoneArena’s original report also cited a 30% minimum charge requirement for installation.

Why it was called “yet another” update

The report followed an earlier update covered on August 5, 2024. The second release reportedly used the same broad changelog language, which may indicate a follow-up release, a wider rollout, or repeated generic wording. The available information does not establish whether it corrected a defect in the earlier firmware or simply expanded availability.

Did it improve battery life?

There is an important difference between charging stability and battery runtime:

  • Battery runtime is how long the watch operates between charges.
  • Charging stability concerns whether charging starts reliably, maintains a connection, reports the percentage consistently, and behaves correctly near a full charge.

Samsung documented the second category, not a measured improvement in the first. No official figure shows that the update added a particular number of hours or days. It is therefore inaccurate to describe the patch as a guaranteed fix for battery drain.

The distinction matters because a watch that repeatedly stops charging may appear to have poor battery life, while a watch that charges normally but drains quickly may have a different cause—such as LTE use, GPS workouts, Always On Display, health sensors, apps, notifications, weak connectivity, temperature, or aging hardware.

How to install a Galaxy Watch Ultra update

For the historical update, the reported path was:

  1. Open Galaxy Wearable on the paired phone.
  2. Tap Watch settings.
  3. Tap Watch software update.
  4. Select Download and install.

The 2024 report said the watch needed at least 30% charge before the update could proceed. Samsung’s current instructions may use slightly different labels depending on the watch software, region, and phone. The broader current path is Galaxy Wearable → Watch settings or Settings → About watch → Update watch software → Update now or Download updates manually. See Samsung’s support instructions for the current menu options.

After updating the watch itself, update watch apps through Galaxy Wearable → Galaxy Store → More options → My page → Update → Watch. Rollout timing and menu labels can vary by country, carrier, Bluetooth or LTE model, and firmware branch.

Latest Galaxy Watch Ultra firmware in 2026

The 2024 battery-related patch should not be confused with the latest firmware listed for the watch.

What to do if your Watch Ultra still drains quickly

First identify whether the problem is charging or runtime.

If charging is unreliable

  1. Inspect the watch, charging puck, cable, and power adapter for physical or liquid damage.
  2. Clean and correctly align the watch on the charger.
  3. Use a Samsung-approved charger and compatible accessories. Samsung warns that some third-party chargers may not charge the watch properly.
  4. Try a known-good power source and charger if available.
  5. Install any pending watch and app updates.

If the watch charges normally but drains rapidly

  1. Restart the watch and allow several normal charge cycles after a major update. Apps may still be downloading and background processes may be settling immediately afterward.
  2. Review battery usage and reduce unnecessary health-tracking features.
  3. Temporarily disable Always On Display, voice wake-up, and unwanted notifications.
  4. Check whether LTE, weak cellular signal, GPS-heavy workouts, continuous health tracking, or Wi-Fi is driving the drain.
  5. Test with a simpler watch face and fewer third-party apps.
  6. Avoid using or charging the watch in extreme temperatures.
  7. If paired with a Samsung phone, run the battery diagnostic in Samsung Members when available.

Verizon advises allowing additional time for apps to download after an update, so battery behavior immediately after installation is not necessarily representative of normal operation.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling it a battery-life update: the documented change was charging stability.
  • Assuming every model receives the same build: international, U.S. carrier, LTE, and Bluetooth branches can differ.
  • Expecting 175MB exactly: that was the approximate size reported for the historical release, not a universal download size.
  • Blaming firmware for every charging problem: a damaged or incompatible charger can produce similar symptoms.
  • Measuring runtime immediately after updating: background downloads and setup activity can temporarily increase drain.
  • Factory-resetting too soon: a reset erases data and requires reconfiguration. Update apps, inspect charging hardware, review settings, restart the watch, and run diagnostics first. Consider a reset only after backing up and after other steps fail.

Verdict

The August 2024 Galaxy Watch Ultra update was a genuine battery-related release, but the precise claim was improved charging stability, not longer battery life. Samsung did not publish a runtime figure or promise to fix all battery-drain complaints. The latest firmware listed in July 2026 is a newer security-focused release and should not be presented as another battery-performance patch.
