Samsung’s Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is no longer a rumored fix: announced July 22, 2026, it has an 800mAh battery—about 35% larger than the original Ultra’s—and can charge up to 40% in around 30 minutes, according to Samsung’s U.S. announcement. But Samsung still rates it for up to 60 hours with the always-on display (AOD) enabled. The Ultra2 improves the hardware behind Samsung’s smartwatch battery problem; it does not promise a multi-day escape from charging.
What is Samsung’s smartwatch battery problem?
Battery life is not an objective ranking of every smartwatch weakness, but it is a persistent tension in Samsung’s flagship-watch proposition. The Galaxy Watch Ultra is built to track workouts, sleep and health around the clock, yet charging requires taking it off. That can interrupt overnight tracking, and GPS workouts, LTE, music streaming, a bright display and frequent sensor use can make the next charge arrive sooner.
That friction matters more on an expensive outdoor watch. A rugged case and adventure features invite comparison with watches designed to run for longer between charges. The useful question is not simply whether the Ultra2 has a bigger battery, but whether it keeps enough charge through the activities and nights for which people buy it.
What changed from the original Galaxy Watch Ultra?
Samsung’s published specifications show a larger battery and faster charging alongside a brighter display, a new processor and more outdoor capabilities. Those changes make the Ultra2 more capable, but capacity alone does not establish how long it will last in a particular user’s routine.

Specifications are from Samsung’s Ultra2 product page and U.S. launch announcement. “Not stated” means the cited Ultra2 materials do not provide a comparable original-model figure; it does not imply the older watch lacks the feature.
The battery is about 35% larger
Samsung lists 800mAh for the Ultra2 and 590mAh for the original Ultra, a difference of approximately 35%. That is a substantial increase in capacity. It does not guarantee 35% more runtime: battery capacity is only one input, while display use, radios, software and tracking affect power consumption.
Charging is quicker, but still requires a charging opportunity
Samsung claims the Ultra2 can reach up to 40% in around 30 minutes. A short top-up could fit into a shower or breakfast routine and make it easier to resume wearing the watch. It does not replenish the watch during a hike, and that benefit depends on having the appropriate charging setup available. Samsung’s cited product material does not establish whether older charging accessories are compatible, so owners should check the model’s instructions rather than assume.

The display and processor change the power equation
The Ultra2’s display is specified at up to 5,000 nits, a peak brightness intended to aid visibility outdoors—not a claim that it runs at that brightness continuously. High brightness, particularly alongside AOD, can demand more power. The switch from Exynos W1000 to Snapdragon Wear Elite is a platform change; Samsung promotes performance improvements, but the cited specifications do not quantify an efficiency gain. It would be premature to treat the new chip as proof of longer battery life.
More outdoor capability can mean more power demand
Samsung lists LTE, dual-frequency L1+L5 GPS, GPX route support, trail-running features and EN13319 dive certification, alongside health and sleep insights. These functions add practical value for outdoor use, but GPS sessions, cellular connections, bright-screen use and active health monitoring are also demanding scenarios. The watch is certified for supported diving use; certification does not make it a substitute for a dedicated dive computer.
Does the Ultra2 actually last longer?
The answer depends on which measure you mean:
- Battery capacity: Yes. Samsung’s listed 800mAh is approximately 35% above the original Ultra’s 590mAh.
- Official AOD-on estimate: Samsung still says up to 60 hours. “Up to” is an estimate, not a guaranteed minimum or a promise for every setting.
- Real-world runtime: It varies with settings and use. TechRadar reported about 60 hours in its AOD testing, but that result reflects the reviewer’s test conditions, not a universal outcome. See its Galaxy Watch Ultra2 review.
The unchanged headline estimate is the central caveat. The battery grew, but so did the display’s peak-brightness capability and the watch’s feature set. One plausible interpretation is that some added capacity offsets more demanding hardware or use, or supports performance and endurance in scenarios not captured by the AOD headline. Samsung has not given that as its explanation, so it remains analysis rather than a confirmed design rationale.

There is not enough standardized evidence here to promise a particular runtime for a daily GPS workout, LTE music streaming, high-brightness outdoor use, or sleep tracking combined with continuous health measurements. In general, GPS and LTE use, streaming, frequent assistant requests, background apps, cold weather and new-device setup can reduce runtime. Pairing over Bluetooth, keeping brightness moderate, limiting GPS sessions and disabling features you do not need can help. Battery-saver mode may extend use, but the cited sources do not provide a comparable runtime figure for it.
Why the battery matters for sleep and health tracking
The practical benefit of a longer-lasting watch is continuity: fewer occasions when a depleted battery prevents a sleep record, workout or ongoing trend measurement. Fast charging may help users fit charging into an existing routine, but someone who charges overnight to guarantee a full battery can still miss overnight sleep tracking. If sleep data is a priority, plan a brief charging window while awake rather than assuming the watch can remain on continuously.

What the Ultra2 costs and what else to consider
Samsung’s U.S. store lists the Galaxy Watch Ultra2 at $699.99. That is a high price for a watch whose official AOD-on endurance estimate remains 60 hours, so the extra capacity is most compelling for people who value the Ultra’s outdoor hardware and faster top-ups—not shoppers whose sole priority is weeklong battery life.
| Option | U.S. price in cited material | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Watch Ultra2 | $699.99, Samsung U.S. listing | Galaxy users who want the newer hardware, LTE, rugged design and larger battery. |
| Galaxy Watch Ultra (2025) | $649.99, Samsung U.S. listing | Buyers who want the Ultra format for less and can forgo the Ultra2’s battery, charging, processor and display updates. |
| Galaxy Watch9 | $379.99 Bluetooth; $429.99 LTE, Samsung’s U.S. launch announcement | Everyday smartwatch and health use at a substantially lower launch price, without the Ultra’s rugged positioning. |
Prices are U.S. figures in the cited Samsung materials; store prices and promotions can change. Check Samsung’s Ultra2 product page, Ultra (2025) buying page and launch announcement for their respective listings. LTE service also depends on carrier availability and may require a separate plan.

The Ultra2 is best considered an Android watch, not an iPhone alternative. Compatibility and feature availability can vary by phone brand, software version, country and regulatory approval. Samsung’s compatibility guidance explains device requirements; some Samsung health features require a compatible Galaxy phone, Samsung Health and a Samsung account. ECG, blood-pressure and irregular-heart-rhythm functions have additional market and use limitations. Samsung’s U.S. Health Monitor instructions set out requirements for the features covered there. These are wellness tools and should not be treated as a diagnosis.

- Touch Responsiveness Preserved, Zero Delay: Ultra-thin 0.33mm construction maintains the sensitive touch response Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 demands — taps, swipes, edge gestures, and watch-face long-press actions register without delay
- 9H+ Tempered Glass for Sport-Band Lifestyle: 10H+ surface hardness defeats scratches from keys, gym equipment, weight racks, door frames, and the daily contact a wrist-mounted screen takes. Built for runners, gym-goers, swimmers, climbers, and outdoor users
- Precision Cut-out : Designed to cover the watch face while keeping the original watch design.
- IP68 Water Resistance Maintained: Compatible with the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2's IP68 water resistance. Wear it through your workout, your shower, your swim, no protector removal required.
Durability claims also have boundaries. IP69K and 10 ATM ratings do not guarantee protection from every combination of salt water, hot tubs, chemicals, impact or improper maintenance. Follow Samsung’s use and cleaning instructions. Dive certification is not a replacement for a dive computer or dive training.
Who should buy the Galaxy Watch Ultra2?
Consider it if you use a Galaxy phone and need the Ultra’s capabilities
- You want LTE, rugged construction and outdoor tracking in a Samsung smartwatch.
- Your original Ultra’s battery condition or charging routine is frustrating, and the larger capacity plus faster charging would address that friction.
- You value the brighter outdoor display, dual-frequency GPS and supported dive features enough to pay for the newer hardware.
Skip it if endurance is your main requirement
- You expect a week or more between charges: the official AOD-on claim is up to 60 hours, not weeklong endurance.
- You already get acceptable use from the original Ultra and do not need the new display, processor or charging changes.
- You use an iPhone, or you need a particular Samsung health feature that is unavailable on your phone or in your region.
- You mainly want long-running training and navigation features; compare Garmin’s current offerings directly, since exact model and price comparisons are not established here.
Verdict: a meaningful fix, not a battery revolution
The Ultra2 addresses the hardware bottleneck more convincingly than a routine refresh: it has an approximately 35% larger battery and faster charging. But Samsung’s official AOD-on estimate remains up to 60 hours, and demanding GPS, LTE and display use can still bring charging forward. For Galaxy users who want the Ultra’s outdoor capabilities, it is a meaningful improvement in charging flexibility and battery headroom. For anyone expecting Samsung’s flagship watch to stop needing frequent charging, the evidence does not yet support that promise.
