The battery figures below are manufacturer estimates for different models and conditions, not results from a controlled head-to-head test. Available evidence does not establish that either brand’s watches physically last longer or fail less often.
What “better for long-term use” means
Long-term ownership is about more than a watch’s launch-day feature list. Consider how often you are willing to charge it, how well it works with your phone, whether its fitness tools match your routine, and what is actually known about updates and physical lifespan. The right choice depends on which of those matters most to you.

Samsung positions Galaxy Watch as a smartphone companion with apps, calls, texts and fitness features. Garmin’s Forerunner range emphasizes training plans, running metrics, recovery and multisport features, while also offering notifications, music, safety features and payments. These are different priorities, not a simple divide between a “smart” watch and a “fitness” watch. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch guide and Garmin’s Forerunner announcement describe those product emphases.

Battery life and charging
The published estimates favor Garmin among the models covered here, but they are not directly comparable: they refer to different devices and specifications. Samsung states that Galaxy Watch8 offers up to 30 hours with Always On Display (AOD) enabled. Garmin claims up to 12 days in smartwatch mode for Venu 4, up to 11 days for Forerunner 570, and up to 15 days for Forerunner 970.

| Model | Manufacturer battery estimate | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy Watch8 | Up to 30 hours | Samsung specifies AOD enabled; its US product page gives the same estimate for 40 mm and 44 mm models. Samsung |
| Garmin Venu 4 | Up to 12 days | Garmin’s smartwatch-mode claim, announced in 2025; not independent testing. Garmin |
| Garmin Forerunner 570 | Up to 11 days | Garmin’s smartwatch-mode claim; the announcement page’s publication date is not stated in the available page information. Garmin |
| Garmin Forerunner 970 | Up to 15 days | Garmin’s smartwatch-mode claim; the announcement page’s publication date is not stated in the available page information. Garmin |
“Up to” figures are not a promise of your personal runtime. GPS use, music, LTE, AOD, notifications and third-party watch faces can affect battery life. If charging every night is a deal-breaker, Garmin’s stated estimates offer more headroom in these examples; check the exact model’s settings and battery specifications before buying.
Phone compatibility and everyday smartwatch features
Galaxy Watch is an Android watch, and compatibility details can be specific to the model and region. Samsung’s US Watch8 page says it pairs with Android and lists Samsung Galaxy phones running Android 12 or later for the compatibility question on that page. Garmin says Forerunner 570 supports notifications when paired with an iPhone or Android phone. That does not establish that every Garmin feature works identically across phones or countries.

Fitness and health tools
Choose around the training you actually do
Garmin’s Forerunner 570 and 970 are oriented toward running and multisport use, with running metrics, training readiness and adaptive workouts. The 970 adds mapping. Garmin says an HRM 600 is required for certain Forerunner 970 running metrics, so include that model-specific accessory requirement if those metrics are part of your reason for buying.
Venu 4 takes a broader wellness-and-smartwatch approach. Garmin lists HRV status, Body Battery, women’s health tracking, ECG, training readiness, smart notifications, music storage, Garmin Pay and safety and tracking features. These are manufacturer-described functions, not evidence that one watch is a medical diagnostic device or a substitute for clinical advice. Garmin says ECG is available only on select watches and in select regions, and that its app is intended for adults 22 and older. Garmin’s Venu 4 announcement

Check health-feature conditions before relying on them
Health features can depend on the model, phone and country. Samsung says Galaxy Watch8 blood-pressure readings require calibration with a separate cuff. ECG and other measurements also have availability conditions; check the local product documentation and treat watch readings as wellness information rather than diagnosis. Samsung’s Watch8 product page
Software updates: what the stated policy does and does not promise
Samsung says it extended security update support for Galaxy devices by up to seven years, effective January 2024. The same security page separately lists Galaxy Watch models in a quarterly update list, but it does not specify a guaranteed update duration for each listed watch. Therefore, “up to seven years” should not be read as a watch-specific support promise. Samsung Mobile Security’s policy and update list

The available material does not establish a directly comparable, guaranteed software-support term for the Garmin models discussed here. Check the manufacturer’s current support information for the exact model rather than assuming a brand-wide update lifespan.
Physical lifespan, durability and ownership costs
There is no comparable failure-rate, repairability or expected-years-of-service data here that shows whether Galaxy Watch or Garmin lasts longer physically. Samsung markets its Ultra line for rugged outdoor use and describes its materials, but a rugged positioning claim is not proof of a longer real-world service life. Compare the specific models’ materials, water ratings, warranty and repair terms for your region; those details cannot be generalized from one brand to every watch in its range.
Accessories are also model-specific. Garmin identifies the HRM 600 as necessary for certain Forerunner 970 metrics. Before buying replacement bands, chargers or sensors, verify compatibility with the exact watch rather than assuming accessories are interchangeable across generations or brands.

Which one should you choose?
Choose Garmin if
- You want fewer charging interruptions and the models’ stated smartwatch-mode runtimes fit your expectations.
- Your regular use centers on running, structured training, recovery information or multisport features.
- You are comfortable checking whether a particular metric needs a separate sensor, such as the HRM 600 for certain Forerunner 970 metrics.
Choose Galaxy Watch if
- You want apps and phone-related features to be central to your watch experience.
- You use an Android phone and have checked compatibility for the specific model; Samsung’s US Watch8 page lists Galaxy phones on Android 12 or later for its stated compatibility question.
- You prefer Samsung’s lineup choices, including the standard everyday line, rotating-bezel Classic positioning or outdoor-oriented Ultra positioning.
For a current model example, Garmin announced Venu 4 in 2025 with a US suggested starting retail price of $549.99 and US purchase availability beginning September 22, 2025. That is a launch price, not a current quote; check local pricing and availability. Garmin’s announcement
