The June 12, 2025 Galaxy Watch8 leak was broadly accurate. Renders reported by 9to5Google from Android Headlines showed Samsung’s standard smartwatch with a circular display inside a rounded-square case. Samsung later released that shape as the Watch8’s new cushion design.
What the Galaxy Watch8 leak showed
The leaked renders appeared to show the base Galaxy Watch8 in a black finish, with a circular screen surrounded by a subtly rounded-square, or “squircle,” housing. The display itself was not square.

The watch retained two physical buttons on the right side. Its outer silhouette looked more substantial than the traditional circular Galaxy Watch7 design, but less rugged and aggressive than the Galaxy Watch Ultra. Coverage also pointed to two expected case sizes for the standard model.
At the time, these were official-looking renders rather than Samsung-confirmed product images. They revealed the apparent industrial-design direction, not a verified list of specifications or software features.

Why the case shape mattered
Samsung’s standard Galaxy Watches had traditionally emphasized a circular case. The leaked Watch8 suggested a change in that formula: Samsung could keep the familiar circular watch-face presentation while giving the entire watch a more distinctive outer shape.
That made the design look like a bridge between a conventional Galaxy Watch and the more squared-off Ultra. It was not simply a smaller Ultra. The standard Watch8 remained the slimmer, less rugged mainstream model, while the cushion shape gave the wider Watch8 family a more unified visual identity.
Samsung later described the exterior as a new cushion design, alongside a thinner body and an updated Dynamic Lug System.
Was the leak accurate?
Yes, in its central design claim. The retail Galaxy Watch8 kept the key features visible in the renders:

- A circular display.
- A rounded-square cushion-style case.
- Two standard physical controls.
- A slimmer 8.6 mm body.
- A revised lug and band structure.
Samsung’s later specifications list the 40 mm model at 42.7 × 40.4 × 8.6 mm and 30 g, while the 44 mm model measures 46.0 × 43.7 × 8.6 mm and weighs 34 g. That validates the broad shape and proportions shown in the leak, but it does not prove that every render detail—such as the exact finish, color or material—matched every retail configuration.
Galaxy Watch8 versus Watch8 Classic and Ultra
| Model | Case and controls | Positioning |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Watch8 | 40 or 44 mm cushion case; circular display; two buttons; no rotating bezel | Thinner mainstream model |
| Galaxy Watch8 Classic | 46 mm cushion case; rotating bezel; dedicated Quick Button | More traditional and premium-feeling |
| Galaxy Watch Ultra | Larger ruggedized case with Ultra-specific hardware | Outdoor-focused flagship |
The Watch8 Classic also uses the cushion design, but its rotating bezel and larger body make it a substantially different watch. The bezel belongs to the Classic, not the standard Watch8.

The finished watch also introduced features including Google Gemini integration, Sleep-related guidance, Running Coach, vascular-load monitoring during sleep and an Antioxidant Index. Those were final-product features, not information established by the June 2025 design leak. Health and fitness measurements should be treated as wellness guidance rather than medical diagnosis, and availability can vary by region, phone and software configuration.
What changed from the Galaxy Watch7?
The most visible change is the cushion-style exterior. The Watch8 is also thinner at 8.6 mm, uses the revised Dynamic Lug System and offers a brighter display rated by Samsung at up to 3,000 nits. The 44 mm battery is 435 mAh, compared with the Watch7’s listed 425 mAh capacity.
This is not a dramatic processor-generation upgrade. Samsung’s corporate specifications associate both generations with the Exynos W1000 family. The stronger case for the Watch8 is its industrial design, slimmer profile, newer Wear OS and One UI software, brighter display and expanded health features.

Is the new design practical?
The thinner body may appeal to people who wear a watch overnight or during workouts, while the revised lugs are intended to improve the fit and make band changes easier. The circular screen also preserves Samsung’s familiar round-watch presentation.

- WHY GALAXY WATCH8 CLASSIC: Timeless design.* New lug system for easy band detachment & replacement.* Advanced health & sleep tracking features for total body wellness.* Improved user interface.* Personal AI assistant for hands free help.¹* 2-Yr Warranty
- BUILT TO PERFORM. DESIGNED TO IMPRESS: Show off your style with an iconic design that blends tradition with cutting-edge innovation.¹ A brighter screen makes everything easy to see, and a rotating bezel gives you access to your favorite apps
- YOUR EVERY COMMAND, RIGHT ON YOUR WRIST: Get a little extra help with day-to-day tasks. Galaxy Watch 8 Classic features a personal AI assistant¹ that helps you get things done hands-free. Simply speak the command and your Watch makes it happen
- UNLOCK THE SECRETS TO BETTER SLEEP: When you get good sleep, it feels like anything is possible. Start each day with more energy and better focus using Advanced Sleep Coaching² - improved with even more ways to help you sleep smarter
- QUICK UPDATES, AT A GLANCE: Get updates, select apps and more with Now Bar³,⁴ and an improved user experience. Now Bar conveniently puts the info you use the most - like weather, news and more - right on your main Watch screen
The trade-offs are equally clear. Buyers who prefer a traditional watch silhouette may dislike the rounded-square housing, and anyone who specifically wants a rotating bezel must pay more for the Classic. The 40 mm model is lighter but has the smaller display and 325 mAh battery; the 44 mm model gives up some weight for a larger screen and 435 mAh battery.
Do not assume that every older Galaxy Watch band or accessory fits. Check the connector and model-specific compatibility before buying replacement bands or cases.
Which Galaxy Watch should you buy?
- Choose the Galaxy Watch8 if you want the lighter, thinner mainstream model, like the new case shape and do not need a rotating bezel.
- Choose the Watch8 Classic if the rotating bezel and more conventional watch styling matter more than minimum weight or price.
- Choose the Watch Ultra if rugged construction, outdoor use and Ultra-specific hardware are more important than a compact design.
- Consider the Galaxy Watch7 if you prefer its conventional circular case or find it substantially discounted and do not need the Watch8’s newer software and health features.
Galaxy Watch8 works with Samsung Galaxy phones running Android 12 or later. It is an Android-focused Wear OS watch; compatibility and individual Samsung Health features may differ on non-Samsung Android phones. Do not assume iPhone support.

Samsung’s live buying pages showed selected Bluetooth/Wi-Fi models at about $299.99 for 40 mm and $329.99 for 44 mm when checked. Promotions change, so check the current configuration and selling price.
LTE adds the watch premium and usually a recurring carrier charge. It is most useful for calls, messages, streaming and emergency connectivity when you leave your phone behind. If your phone is almost always with you, Bluetooth/Wi-Fi is generally the better value.
Verdict: a real design reveal, not a complete product leak
The Galaxy Watch8 leak mattered because it revealed a genuine shift in Samsung’s standard-watch design before launch. Its central visual claim held up: the final watch has a circular display inside a rounded-square cushion case.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat the leak did not establish was the complete specification sheet, software package, health features or real-world battery life. In retrospect, it was best understood as an early design reveal. The finished Watch8 is a meaningful change for buyers who value its slimmer profile and new silhouette, but Watch7 owners should upgrade for the combined design and software improvements—not because the leak promised a completely new processor or a smaller Ultra.
