There is no single Gallet-versus-Breitling design difference: the distinction depends on the models. Gallet’s documented vintage chronographs include specialist functions for regatta countdowns, multiple time zones, and elapsed-time measurement. Breitling’s best-known examples include the Navitimer’s rotating aviation slide rule and the legibility-focused Co-Pilot. Compare the exact reference, not just the name on the dial.
How the watches differ at a glance
| Feature | Gallet examples | Breitling examples |
|---|---|---|
| Intended use | Varies by model: regatta countdown, multi-time-zone tracking, or pilot and motorsport timing. | The Navitimer supports aviation calculations; the Co-Pilot emphasizes clear elapsed-time reading. |
| Dial or bezel function | Model-dependent: countdown display, world-time feature, or rotating 12-hour bezel with timing scales. | The Navitimer has a rotating logarithmic slide rule; the Co-Pilot has large luminous numerals and a clean dial. |
| Movement examples | Gallet lists Venus 150, Excelsior Park EP40, and Valjoux 72 across the cited models. | Caliber 11 was a collaborative automatic chronograph movement released in 1969; it does not describe every vintage Breitling. |
| Case sizes in the cited examples | 34.5 mm to 38 mm, depending on model. | Not stated consistently in the cited Breitling history pages; check the exact reference. |
| Condition and provenance | Must be assessed on the individual watch; a model description does not authenticate a particular example. | Must be assessed on the individual watch; a model description does not authenticate a particular example. |

What Gallet’s vintage models were designed to do
Gallet’s official heritage page presents chronographs aimed at distinct tasks rather than one signature aviation format. Its examples range from a multi-time-zone watch to a regatta timer and a pilot model with elapsed-time scales. The dates and specifications below are the brand’s published heritage descriptions.

Navitimer: an aviation slide rule
Breitling’s history says Willy Breitling adapted the logarithmic slide rule used on the Chronomat for aviation calculations and incorporated it into a rotating bezel. The Navitimer was introduced in 1952. The brand says the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association announced the design as its official timepiece two years later. Its defining contrast with the cited Gallet models is the integrated calculation scale, rather than a regatta countdown or a 12-hour bezel with tachymeter and telemeter scales.

Co-Pilot ref. 765 AVI: legibility first
Breitling describes the 1953 Co-Pilot ref. 765 AVI as a pilot chronograph with a clean dial and large luminous numerals intended to make readings clear. It represents a different approach from the Navitimer: prioritizing at-a-glance legibility rather than placing a logarithmic calculation scale on the bezel.
Caliber 11: a collaborative 1969 milestone
Caliber 11 belongs to the story of the automatic chronograph released in 1969, not to every vintage Breitling. Breitling’s Project 99 history gives the release date as March 3, 1969, and names Breitling, Heuer Leonidas, Hamilton Buren, and Dubois-Depraz as project partners. Its described layout placed the hour recorder at 9, the minute recorder at 3, the date at 6, and the crown on the left.

How to compare a specific watch
Brand-level descriptions help explain design intent, but they cannot establish whether an individual watch is authentic, original, or in good condition. For a watch you are evaluating, check the specific configuration and its documentation:

- Reference and model: Confirm the exact model and reference rather than relying on a seller’s broad label.
- Movement: Identify the movement in the watch and compare it with what is documented for that particular model; Gallet’s listed movements vary across the examples above.
- Dial and bezel: Check that the functions and markings match the claimed configuration.
- Case dimensions: Compare measurements with reliable documentation for the exact reference. The Gallet examples above have published dimensions; the cited Breitling history pages do not provide a consistent set of case sizes.
- Condition, provenance, and service records: Assess the individual watch and supporting documents. The historical descriptions here do not establish current market value, servicing costs, or the authenticity of any sale listing.
Modern Gallet Classics are interpretations, not vintage watches
On September 3, 2026, Gallet announced Gallet Classics, a trio of hand-wound chronographs inspired by historic models: the Tribute to Multichron Yachting Big Eye, Tribute to Multichron 45, and Tribute to Silverlight, which draws on the historic Multichron Navigator. The announcement lists 38 mm proportions, approximately 70 hours of power reserve, and Breitling Caliber B09. These are contemporary interpretations and should not be confused with the vintage watches discussed above.
