Garmin has not given a release date. Until that update arrives, the stated workaround is to tap the touchscreen or press a button, which resets brightness temporarily.
What Garmin has said
On October 7, 2026, a Garmin moderator using a verified account posted an update in the Garmin Community Forums thread titled “23.31 Screen Brightness Issue & Increased Battery Drain.” The moderator wrote that engineers are aware of a concern that “may cause the brightness to stay fully lit, after being in bright ambient conditions.” The post continues: “There is fic for this Pending. And will be released with the next software update. We do not yet have a time frame for this release.” The word “fic” appears as written in the original post [sic]. The same post says the moderator will report back when more details are available.

Three points in that statement matter for owners. Garmin confirms the behavior exists, not just that users have reported it. The fix is planned for the next software update. Garmin has not committed to a date. Garmin also advised affected users to tap the touchscreen or press a button to correct the screen temporarily.
What owners are reporting
Notebookcheck, in a report dated October 8, 2026, describes the same behavior and links it to firmware 23.31. The report is secondary coverage of forum posts, so it describes what users say happened rather than measured results. Notebookcheck describes “dozens” of forum reports. That word is an informal description of the thread, not a count of affected watches.

- For your active lifestyle, a built-in speaker and mic let you make and take phone calls from your wrist when your watch is paired to your smartphone — and you can even use your smartphone’s voice assistant to respond to text messages and more
The reported conditions are specific:
- Always-On Display (AOD) enabled. The reports involve watches with AOD turned on.
- Gesture wake disabled. The reports involve watches where raise-to-wake is turned off.
- Bright ambient exposure. The trigger described is direct sunlight. After that, brightness reportedly stays at its highest setting even after the wearer moves into a dark room.
Owners also say the elevated brightness is linked to faster battery drain. That link is a user claim. No published test measures how much extra battery the bug consumes, so treat it as a plausible symptom that is not yet quantified.
Temporary workaround
Garmin’s stated workaround is to wake the screen by hand. Reports indicate this resets brightness to normal until the next time the watch is exposed to bright light.

- Multisport GPS smartwatch with built-in inReach technology for two-way satellite and LTE connectivity (active subscription required; coverage limitations may apply; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)

- In an emergency, inReach satellite technology allows you to trigger an interactive SOS message to the Garmin ResponseSM coordination center for 24/7 assistance (active subscription required; coverage limitations may apply; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
- LTE network connectivity lets you leave your phone behind; use your watch to exchange messages and make voice calls — plus let friends follow along with LiveTrack location sharing (30-second update rate) and location check-ins with the on-device Garmin Messenger app (active subscription required; coverage limitations may apply)
- inReach technology allows you to send messages and get location check-ins over satellite when taking on an off-grid adventure (active subscription required; coverage limitations may apply; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
- Tap the touchscreen once while the screen is still fully lit.
- If the screen does not respond to a tap, press one of the watch’s buttons.
- Check that brightness has dropped to a normal level in a darker room.
- Repeat the tap or button press after any further time in strong sunlight.
This is a workaround, not a fix. It does not change the underlying setting or stop the trigger, and it requires the owner to intervene each time.

How to check for and install the update
Garmin’s general update guidance, published in a September 22, 2026 press release, says compatible devices can receive updates in two ways:
Rank #4
- Advanced multisport GPS smartwatch for athletes/adventurers features a 1.4” solar charged display with scratch-resistant sapphire lens, durable titanium bezel and built-in LED flashlight for after-dark visibility
- Battery performance: up to 48 days of battery life in smartwatch mode with solar charging (assumes all-day wear with 3 hours per day outside in 50,000 lux conditions) and up to 149 hours in GPS mode with solar charging (assumes continuous use for entire period in 50,000 lux conditions) — all with an always-on display, so you’re ready to take on the toughest challenges
- Power up your body’s performance, endurance and resistance to injury with targeted strength training plans, real-time stamina tracking, sport-specific workouts and a full range of built-in sports apps
- Your training readiness score is based on sleep quality, recovery, training load and HRV status to determine if you’re primed to go hard and reap the rewards (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- For your active lifestyle, a built-in speaker and mic let you make and take phone calls from your wrist when your watch is paired to your smartphone — and you can even use your smartphone’s voice assistant to respond to text messages and more
- Automatic updates through Garmin Connect, when the watch is synced with the app.
- Garmin Express, the desktop application Garmin uses for manual updates.
These methods are the official channels for software updates. They do not show that the brightness fix is available yet. Check the Garmin Community Forums thread and Garmin’s fēnix 8 software page for announcements, and install the update once Garmin confirms it is released for your model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is still unknown
- Release timing. Garmin has said only that the fix will come with the next software update, without a date.
- Scale. No reliable count of affected watches has been published.
- Battery impact. No controlled measurement of battery loss from the bug has been published.
- Hardware involvement. Nothing in Garmin’s statement or the reports points to a failed battery or display. The described problem is a software behavior in the brightness setting.
If your watch stays at full brightness after the workaround, record the firmware version shown in your device settings, your AOD and gesture settings, and the conditions when the problem happened. Add that to the forum thread, which is where Garmin said it would post updates.

Garmin’s own wording is the most reliable guide to this issue. It confirms the behavior and a planned fix, and it does not promise a date. Until a release is announced, the tap or button workaround is the only documented remedy.
