Artem Straps 20mm Watch Straps: How to Check the 20mm Lug Width Before You Buy

Artem sells 20mm sailcloth and other straps. Here is how to check lug width, why the buckle end narrows, and what the most-common-width claim actually shows.

Artem Straps sells a 20 mm strap collection that includes sailcloth styles. The number refers to the width where the strap meets the watch’s lugs, so the only reliable test of fit is whether that lug width matches your watch. A retailer describes 20 mm as the most common lug width in watchmaking, but that is a retailer’s claim rather than an independently verified market ranking, and it does not change how you check fit.

What the “most popular” claim rests on

The only explicit support for calling 20 mm the most popular lug width comes from CNS Watch Bands, in a 20 mm buyer’s guide dated July 16, 2026. That guide states that “20mm is the most common lug width in watchmaking” and lists watches it says take a 20 mm strap. The guide does not explain how it defined “common,” and it does not cite a broad market dataset, so the superlative should be attributed to the guide rather than presented as established fact.

A long list of 20 mm products on one retailer’s site reflects that retailer’s inventory. It shows what Artem stocks, not how many watches in circulation use 20 mm lugs. Artem’s collection is useful for understanding its own sizing and products, not for ranking the industry.

What lug width means

Artem defines lug width as the distance between the two tabs (lugs) that hold the strap or bracelet. Its lug-width guide gives the rule plainly: “The strap size (lug width) needs to be the same as the lug width of your watch.” Case diameter does not determine this. Two watches of similar size can have different lug spacing, so a strap sized from the case alone may not seat correctly.

How to measure your watch’s lug width

Artem’s guide offers two methods. Use whichever is faster for you, but confirm the number before ordering.

  1. Look up the exact model. Find the watch’s reference or model name, then check the manufacturer’s specifications or a reliable product listing for the lug width.
  2. Or measure the gap yourself. Remove the existing strap or bracelet, then use a ruler or vernier caliper to measure the distance between the inside faces of the two lugs where the strap sits.
  3. Record the result in millimetres. If the measurement is not a whole number, Artem’s guide says to contact the company for advice rather than rounding up or down.
  4. Compare the number with the lug width of the strap you are considering, not with its overall width or the case size.

Why the buckle end is narrower

Artem’s standard taper guide describes a 20 mm strap that narrows toward the buckle or clasp. The lug end and the hardware end therefore have different widths, and each needs its own check.

Lug end 20 mm Your watch’s lug width
Buckle or clasp end 18 mm The buckle or clasp width for that strap configuration

Confirm the taper on the product page for the specific strap you choose, because Artem’s taper guide is a standard reference and configurations can differ. The taper guide itself is an older page, so check the current product details before relying on the 18 mm figure.

What Artem’s 20 mm collection includes

Artem’s 20 mm collection page lists sailcloth straps alongside other materials, and it includes product names, size filters, and prices. Several strap styles appear in the collection, so do not assume every 20 mm Artem strap has the same material, construction, or hardware. When the collection was checked, a black sailcloth strap was listed at $112. Prices and stock change, so use the live product page rather than any figure quoted in an article.

Where to search

If you shop on Amazon, the category search “20mm sailcloth watch strap” returns sailcloth straps of this width. It is a category search, not confirmation that Artem sells an Artem-branded listing there. Verify the seller and the listed lug width before you buy, and use “20 mm watch strap” as a broader search if you want to compare styles.

If the numbers do not match

  • A lug width that falls between two standard sizes: contact Artem for advice before ordering, as its guide recommends.
  • A 20 mm strap that looks narrower at the buckle: this is expected from the taper, not a sizing error.
  • A strap listed as 20 mm that does not sit flush against the lugs: recheck your measurement, then compare it with the lug width on the product page before returning the strap.
