Seiko’s New Astron GPS Solar Watches Make Traveling Across Time Zones Easier

Seiko’s May 12, 2026 announcement covers four Astron GPS Solar Dual-Time Chronographs (HAB001–HAB004) that adjust to local time zones via GPS, with a caveat that manual selection may still be needed.

Seiko’s May 12, 2026 announcement introduces four Astron GPS Solar Dual-Time Chronographs, references HAB001 through HAB004, built on the new Caliber 5X63. Seiko says they connect to GPS, adjust to a local time zone with a single button press, and charge from light alone. The useful caveat is that the time-zone adjustment is not fully hands-off: Seiko says manual selection may be required after changes to region, time zone, or daylight saving time (DST) rules.

What Seiko announced

The announcement covers four references from one new family, the Astron GPS Solar Dual-Time Chronograph. It does not describe every Astron on sale. Each model combines dual time with a chronograph, and all four run on Caliber 5X63. The models differ mainly in finish, dial color, and strap or bracelet, and one of them is a limited edition.

Seiko’s own wording in the May 12, 2026 press release explains the core proposition:

“In 2012, Seiko took electronic watchmaking to a new level with the Astron GPS Solar, which connects to the Global Positioning System (GPS) and adjusts to every time zone* with the simple push of a button while generating all the energy it needs from light alone.”

#1 Best Overall
SEIKO Watch SBXY033 [ASTRON Solar Radio Line Metal Band Men] Shipped from Japan Relased in March 2022
  • Includes individual box, Japanese warranty (1 year), and individual box
  • Solar radio wave correction function (receives standard radio waves in Japan, China, USA, Germany, and UK)
  • Full auto-calendar function (until December 31, 2099)
  • Time difference correction function
  • Automatic needle position correction function

The asterisk leads to the qualification that matters for travelers: “If there are changes in the region / time zone / DST, manual selection may be required.”

How the time-zone adjustment works, and where it stops

Seiko lists the following functions for the new models. Each is a manufacturer claim from the release, and the list is not a substitute for testing the watch yourself.

  • High-speed time-zone adjustment: GPS-based switching to a local time zone.
  • Automatic DST adjustment: the watch applies daylight saving changes on its own in normal conditions.
  • Time transfer: time is set from the satellite signal.
  • Signal-reception-result indication: the watch shows whether the latest GPS reception succeeded.
  • Power save: a mode Seiko describes as conserving energy.
  • World time: a function covering 38 time zones.

The limit is the asterisk. Seiko does not promise that every location or every DST rule change will be handled without user action. In practice, a traveler should treat the watch as a strong assistant rather than a guaranteed automatic update. The practical routine is simple:

CITIZEN Men's Eco-Drive Attesa 44.6mm Super Titanium CC4055-65E
  • Since its 1987 launch, the Attesa has delivered dependable performance via expert titanium-processing know-how and innovative chronograph technology, and the latest addition to the collection is no different
  • Satellite GPS Timekeeping System with Worldwide Reception Area, World's Fastest Timekeeping Signal Reception Speed From GPS Navigation Satellites - As Quick as 3 Seconds, World Time in 27 Cities (40 Time Zones), 1/20 Second Chronograph Measures up to 24 Hours, Dual Time Zone, Alarm / Day Date, Universal Coordinated Time (UTC) Display, Perpetual Calendar, Daylight Savings Time Indicator, Power Reserve Indicator, Light Level Indicator
  • Black Super Titanium with DLC Coating 44.6mm Case
  • Anti-Reflective Double Domed Sapphire Crystal
  • 100M Water Resistant and Limited Warranty
  1. After you land, let the watch sit in light and wait for the time-zone function to run.
  2. Check the signal-reception-result indication to confirm that GPS reception succeeded.
  3. Compare the displayed local time with the local clock. If it is off after a region or DST change, select the correct time zone manually, as Seiko’s caveat advises.

Seiko’s release does not give the exact button sequence for each function, and this article does not reproduce one. Use the instructions in the watch’s manual for the operating steps.

The four references compared

Reference Case and bracelet or strap Finish and distinguishing features US recommended retail price (May 12, 2026 release)
HAB001 Titanium case and titanium bracelet, super-hard coating Seiko’s release does not state a dial color or finish distinction from HAB002 $2,700
HAB002 Titanium case and titanium bracelet, super-hard coating Seiko’s release does not state a dial color or finish distinction from HAB001 $2,700
HAB003 Silicone strap; titanium case with partially yellow-gold-colored-plated bezel Black dial with gold-colored accents $2,600
HAB004 Reinforced-silicone strap included Seiko 145th-anniversary limited edition with blue accents; limited to 2,000 pieces $2,900

Prices are the US recommended retail prices Seiko published on May 12, 2026, not current street prices.

Choosing among the four

  • If you want a metal-on-metal look for everyday wear and travel, HAB001 and HAB002 are the titanium-bracelet options at the same listed price. Seiko’s material does not say how to tell them apart, so compare dial photographs before you buy.
  • If you prefer a strap and a lower announced price, HAB003 is the least expensive of the four at $2,600, with a black dial and gold-colored accents.
  • If the anniversary edition matters to you, HAB004 is the only reference in the release positioned as a limited edition, at $2,900 and capped at 2,000 pieces. Its limited status is a reason to check availability early, since the cap is the only supply figure Seiko gives.

Shared specifications

Seiko lists these specifications for the family. They are manufacturer figures from the May 12, 2026 release.

  • Case Size: 39.00 mm, Band Width: 20, Case Thickness: 9.22 mm
  • Solar Quartz movement, 316L stainless steel, Index dial type, Date
  • Stainless steel bracelet, Butterfly clasp with push-buttons,INTERCHANGEABLE-QUICK-RELEASE-BRACELET closure
  • Water-resistant up to a pressure of 10 bar (100 m / 330 ft): suitable for short periods of recreational swimming and showering, but no diving or snorkeling.
  • 2 Year International Warranty
  • Sapphire crystal with super-clear coating
  • 10-bar water resistance
  • 4,800 A/m magnetic resistance
  • Case diameter 43.4 mm and thickness 12.4 mm
  • Quick-change strap system

  • Perpetual calendar correct to 2100
  • Accuracy of ±15 seconds per month without GPS reception, at temperatures between 5°C and 35°C

The ±15-second figure applies only when the watch is not receiving GPS. Seiko gives it as a condition-specific number, so it should not be read as a general accuracy claim for all conditions.

Availability and prices

Seiko said the models would be available from select retail partners nationwide starting June 2026. The release also warns that specifications and prices may change. The release date has since passed, so check current listings before you assume a reference is in stock or still priced at the announced figure. Seiko’s official Astron collection page gives the broader current lineup, which may differ from the four references announced in May.

Straps and accessories

Seiko names two quick-change silicone straps, RA01B14BK (black) and RA01B14WT (white), as compatible with the latest GPS Solar Dual-Time Chronograph models in the release. Confirm the strap fits your exact reference before ordering, because Seiko’s material does not list a full compatibility table for each HAB reference.

What this announcement does and does not establish

The facts in this article come from Seiko Watch Corporation’s May 12, 2026 press release and its Astron collection page. Seiko’s figures for GPS time-zone adjustment, accuracy, and water resistance are the manufacturer’s claims. No independent testing is cited here. The feature list is the clearest guide to what the watches are designed to do; the asterisked caveat is the clearest guide to where you may still need to intervene.
