Choose the Garmin fēnix 8 Pro if outdoor navigation and multisport training are your priorities; the Apple Watch Ultra 3 if smartwatch connectivity and Apple’s safety features matter most; or the Suunto Race 2 if you want detailed offline maps and long GPS-session options. None is a universal winner: the right choice depends on the activities you do, the battery mode you can accept, and the phone and services you use.
What separates these three watches?
All three are premium sports watches, but their emphasis differs. Garmin and Suunto foreground multisport training and outdoor navigation. Apple combines sports and safety features with a broader smartwatch experience. These are manufacturer-stated roles, not the result of a controlled head-to-head test.

| Watch | Best fit | What the manufacturer information establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Garmin fēnix 8 Pro | Outdoor-focused multisport training and navigation | Garmin positions the fēnix family as a premium multisport GPS watch with outdoor mapping and navigation. Battery and feature details depend on the exact model and display variant. |
| Apple Watch Ultra 3 | Sports alongside Apple smartwatch connectivity and safety features | Apple lists multisport workouts and Backtrack GPS data, and describes 5G and satellite connectivity. Support and service conditions can vary by region. |
| Suunto Race 2 | Training and outdoor use with offline maps and multiple GPS battery modes | Suunto lists free detailed offline maps, dual-band GPS, 115+ sport modes and Suunto Coach. |
Which one suits your longest activity or trip?
Battery claims are only comparable when the modes and settings are comparable. The figures below are manufacturer estimates, not results from a shared test; “up to” figures can vary with settings and use.

|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch Ultra 3 | Up to 42 hours of normal use; up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode, according to Apple’s 2025 announcement | Apple’s figures describe different operating modes. Match the mode to your expected use rather than treating the Low Power Mode maximum as standard use. |
| Suunto Race 2 | Up to 55 hours in Performance mode at best GPS accuracy (multi-band); up to 200 hours in Tour mode; up to 18 days of daily use | Tour mode uses lower GPS accuracy and turns heart rate off. Suunto’s daily-use figure assumes daily heart rate enabled and the display waking on wrist raise. |
| Garmin fēnix 8 Pro | Varies by model, display and mode; a single figure for the family is not established here | Choose the exact size and display variant, then check Garmin’s specification for the GPS mode and settings you intend to use. |
Start with the longest activity or stretch between charges you realistically need to cover. If accurate tracking is essential, compare best-accuracy GPS modes; do not weigh Suunto’s 200-hour Tour-mode maximum as though it were equivalent to a best-accuracy session or Apple’s normal-use estimate.

How do maps, route guidance and GPS differ?
Suunto Race 2: offline maps and dual-band GPS
Suunto advertises free detailed offline maps and dual-band GPS for Race 2. That makes the watch relevant if you want maps available on the watch without relying on a live phone connection. The listed capabilities do not, by themselves, establish how its route planning or guidance compares feature-for-feature with Garmin or Apple.
Garmin fēnix 8 Pro: outdoor mapping and navigation
Garmin positions fēnix 8 Pro around outdoor mapping and navigation, alongside its multisport focus. Since the exact feature and battery details can differ by variant, check the product specification for the size and display you intend to buy rather than assuming every fēnix 8 Pro is identical.

Apple Watch Ultra 3: Backtrack GPS data
Apple lists Backtrack GPS data for Ultra 3. That is a navigation-related feature, but the cited Apple specifications do not establish parity with the offline map offerings described by Garmin or Suunto. If detailed maps on the watch are central to your decision, compare the actual mapping and route-planning workflow you need rather than treating all navigation features as interchangeable.

Which watch has the training features you need?
The number of sport modes is not a measure of how deeply a watch supports your training. Before choosing, identify the activities you do and whether you need structured workouts, training-load analysis or recovery guidance.

- Multisport GPS smartwatch features a high-resolution 1.4" MicroLED display that offers remarkable brightness and detail — up to 4,500 nits with over 400,000 individual LEDs — producing rich colors, wide viewing angles and superior readability in intense lighting conditions, such as direct sunlight
- Rugged design features a lightweight titanium bezel, scratch-resistant sapphire lens and other premium materials
- Built-in inReach technology for two-way satellite and LTE connectivity lets you keep in touch, whether you’re on- or off-grid (active subscription required; coverage limitations may apply; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
- In an emergency, inReach satellite technology allows you to trigger an interactive SOS message to the Garmin Response℠ coordination center for 24/7 assistance (active subscription required; coverage limitations may apply; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)

- Garmin fēnix 8 Pro: Garmin presents the fēnix as a premium multisport GPS watch. Confirm that the specific training tools you rely on are listed for your chosen model.
- Apple Watch Ultra 3: Apple lists multisport workouts. If you depend on particular training analytics or structured-workout workflows, confirm that they fit how you train.
- Suunto Race 2: Suunto lists 115+ sport modes and Suunto Coach. Those claims describe breadth and a coaching feature, not equal analytics for every sport or a direct comparison against the other watches.
How important are phone compatibility and connectivity?
Apple’s announcement and technical specifications describe 5G and satellite connectivity for Ultra 3. Availability, regional support and service conditions matter, so verify them where you live and for the services you expect to use before relying on these features.
Suunto lists notifications and media controls; predefined replies are listed for Android. Garmin’s service and connectivity details depend on the selected model and region, so check its exact product listing. In all three cases, decide whether you want a watch that mainly supports training and outdoor use or one that also needs to handle the smartwatch functions you use every day.

What should you check before buying?
- Exact variant: Confirm the fēnix 8 Pro size and display type; specifications and battery figures vary by variant.
- Realistic battery mode: Compare the GPS mode and display settings you expect to use, not the largest number in each product’s marketing.
- Navigation workflow: Check whether you need offline maps, route planning, guidance or a track-back feature; these are not automatically equivalent.
- Training workflow: Verify support for your sports and the specific workout, load or recovery information you use.
- Phone and region: Confirm phone compatibility and local availability or service conditions for connectivity features.
- Local price and SKU: Compare the exact material and version available in your market. Suunto’s US listing showed $499 for All Black and $599 for Titanium Black when checked; those are regional, time-sensitive listing prices, not global or permanent prices.
Which should you shortlist?
Shortlist the Garmin fēnix 8 Pro for outdoor navigation and multisport use, the Apple Watch Ultra 3 for sports combined with Apple smartwatch connectivity, or the Suunto Race 2 for offline maps, dual-band GPS and a stated long-duration Tour mode. Before deciding, compare the exact model, navigation workflow and battery mode you would actually use. Manufacturer specifications describe capabilities and estimates; they do not establish which watch performs best in a direct comparison.
