How fēnix 8 solar charging works
Garmin identifies Power Sapphire as the solar-harvesting lens on the Solar models. It harvests solar energy to extend battery life; solar charging does not mean the watch never needs to be charged. Garmin describes the Solar option as having an always-on display.
The company’s launch figures for the 51 mm models are conditional estimates. Actual battery life can vary with use and settings, and this research did not identify independent battery or solar-efficiency tests.
AMOLED versus Solar
The fēnix 8 offers two display approaches rather than combining AMOLED and solar charging in one model. AMOLED models were announced in 43 mm, 47 mm, and 51 mm sizes; Solar models in 47 mm and 51 mm sizes.
