When prompted, tap Pair Apple Watch Manually and follow the onscreen instructions. Manual pairing replaces the camera step; it does not fix a watch that is already paired or bypass Activation Lock.
Before you start
- Turn on the Apple Watch by holding its side button until the Apple logo appears.
- Keep the watch close to an unlocked iPhone.
- Update the iPhone, turn on Bluetooth, and connect to Wi-Fi or a mobile network.

How to pair an Apple Watch manually
- Start setup. If the “Use your iPhone to set up this Apple Watch” prompt appears, tap Continue. Otherwise, open the Apple Watch app, tap All Watches, then Add Watch. Labels may vary by software version.
- Choose manual pairing. When you reach the screen that normally uses the camera, tap Pair Apple Watch Manually.
- Follow the prompts. Complete the identification and setup instructions shown on the iPhone and watch. The remaining choices depend on whether you are setting up the watch for the first time or restoring it.
- Keep the devices close. Leave the iPhone and watch near each other while setup finishes.
If the manual pairing option does not appear
Make sure you started setup from the Apple Watch app’s All Watches > Add Watch route and that the watch is powered on and close to the iPhone. Check Bluetooth and Wi-Fi or mobile connectivity, and follow the prompts on your actual screen; the interface can vary by software version.
If the watch already shows its face
If the watch displays its normal clock face while you are trying to pair it, Apple says it is already paired with an iPhone. Manual pairing is not the remedy: erase or unpair the watch before setting it up again.

If you have the paired iPhone, unpair the watch in the Apple Watch app. Apple’s unpairing and erasing instructions describe this process. Unpairing erases the watch and removes Activation Lock after you authenticate with the Apple Account.
Activation Lock and a watch without its old iPhone
You can erase a watch from its settings if the paired iPhone is unavailable, but erasing it does not remove Activation Lock. Setup still requires the Apple Account and password previously used with the watch. For a secondhand watch locked to someone else’s account, the previous owner must remove that account link.

If the watch will not turn on
If the watch will not power on, it may need charging before setup. A compatible Apple Watch magnetic charging cable can help with that power problem, but it is not required for manual pairing and will not resolve Activation Lock or an existing pairing. How do I pair an Apple Watch without the setup animation?
