A Garmin Connect IQ developer reports that during some fēnix 9 Pro activities, GPS positions stop reaching a third-party app after about 14 seconds, while other sensor data keeps flowing. That is a reported app data-delivery fault, not evidence that the watch’s GPS is generally inaccurate. The bug report is marked “Under Review.”

What the developer reports

The report is titled “fenix 9 Pro: GPS stops delivering positions to a Connect IQ app about 14 seconds into an activity” and was filed on the Garmin Connect IQ Forums. The developer describes the following:

  • The app receives GPS positions for roughly 14 seconds, then none for the rest of the session.
  • The developer’s FIT file shows position fields stopping at that point, while record messages continue to carry heart rate and altitude.
  • The app’s accelerometer and gyroscope processing reportedly keeps running.
  • The problem occurs whether or not the app requests SatIQ configuration.
  • The test app was The Surfr. app, built with Connect IQ 6.0.3 and SDK 9.2.0.
  • The issue appeared intermittently on the same watch and affected more than half of sessions in the developer’s tests on the Pro 51mm and Pro 47mm.

These are the developer’s own observations. They are not an independent measure of how often the fault occurs across users, apps, or conditions.

Models and firmware named in the report

Item What the report states
Pro 51mm More than half of tested sessions affected (developer-reported)
Pro 47mm More than half of tested sessions affected (developer-reported)
Firmware versions 6.38, 6.48, and 6.49
Connect IQ version 6.0.3
Connect IQ SDK 9.2.0

The report does not say whether other firmware versions or watch sizes were tested, so whether they are affected is not established.

What the report does and does not establish

Question What the evidence shows
Does GPS stop reaching a third-party Connect IQ app? Yes, according to the developer, after about 14 seconds in the reported sessions.
Does Garmin’s native activity recording lose location data? Not established by this report.
Are all apps affected? Not established. The report concerns one named app.
Are recorded GPS tracks generally inaccurate? Not shown by this report. An independent WearableBeat review found side-by-side fēnix 9 and fēnix 8 Pro tracks through woods, trails, and built-up streets effectively identical under the reviewer’s conditions. That is limited testing and does not address the Connect IQ report.
Has Garmin acknowledged or fixed this report? Not established in the sources reviewed. The forum listing shows the report as “Under Review.”

Why accuracy and data delivery are different problems

Accuracy asks how close a recorded position is to where you actually were. This report asks whether positions arrive at all in one third-party app after the first 14 seconds. A track that looks correct in Garmin’s own recording says nothing about whether a separate app received the same positions in real time, and a test of one does not settle the other.

Separate complaints to keep apart

The WearableBeat review also describes crashes, reboots, battery drain, and lag. These are separate reported problems. They do not prove the Connect IQ GPS fault, and the GPS report does not prove them.

Product context

Garmin announced the fēnix 9 Pro on August 25, 2026 as a multisport GPS smartwatch with a titanium watch case. AMOLED models offer up to 3,000 nits of stated peak brightness, and the watch offers optional satellite and LTE connectivity. Garmin warns that satellite and SOS availability depend on region and service coverage. The company’s press release states: “fēnix 9 and fēnix 9 Pro are purpose-built for those who want to perform better and venture farther.” The release does not identify an individual speaker. These official materials describe the product; they do not confirm or refute the app bug.

If you think you are affected

  1. Check whether the activity used a third-party Connect IQ app or data field, or Garmin’s native activity recording. The reported fault concerns the app case.
  2. Note your watch size and firmware version, and compare the firmware with 6.38, 6.48, and 6.49.
  3. If you can read FIT files, look for position fields that stop while heart rate and altitude records continue, as the developer described.
  4. Add your session details to the existing forum report rather than starting a duplicate thread.

What remains unknown

  • Whether Garmin has acknowledged the report beyond the forum listing.
  • The cause of the fault, and whether a firmware or Connect IQ change would address it.
  • Whether native Garmin activities are affected at all.
  • How many users and which apps are affected.
