Both launched on May 15, 2025, with US launch prices of $549.99 for the 42 mm and 47 mm 570 and $749.99 for the 47 mm 970. Orders opened May 21, 2025, according to Garmin.
The important distinction is that the 570 is not merely a cheaper 970 with maps removed. It also lacks the 970’s ECG app, LED flashlight, sapphire lens, and titanium bezel. Neither watch has LTE, satellite messaging, SOS without a phone, or solar charging.

Brighter AMOLED displays
Garmin described the new screens as its brightest smartwatch displays at launch. Both retain touchscreen operation alongside Garmin’s familiar five-button layout. That matters during workouts: buttons remain useful in rain, with gloves, or when a runner does not want to swipe through menus at speed. The always-on display option can reduce endurance.
#1 Best Overall
- Our brightest AMOLED touchscreen display with button controls, a lightweight titanium bezel and sapphire lens, plus a built-in LED flashlight for greater awareness in the dark during early morning or late-night runs
- Up to 15 days of battery life in smartwatch mode and up to 26 hours in GPS mode for a more complete picture of your training and recovery
- Understand your overall energy efficiency with running economy, and see how much you’re slowing down when your foot hits the ground with step speed loss (HRM 600 monitor required; sold separately); running tolerance helps you understand the real impact running has on your body so you can adjust your training to avoid overload and improve
- Train for an event, achieve a milestone, or improve your fitness with Garmin Coach training plans; these running and triathlon plans are personalized to you and adapt based on your performance and recovery
- Built-in microphone and speaker let you make and take phone calls from your wrist when your watch is paired to your smartphone — and you can even use your smartphone’s voice assistant to respond to text messages and more
A speaker and microphone
The built-in speaker and microphone enable wrist-based phone calls, voice-assistant interaction through a paired phone, audible alerts, alarms, and audio playback. They do not turn either watch into an independent cellular smartwatch. Calls, voice functions, and related connectivity require a compatible smartphone and an active connection.
Similarly, LiveTrack, Assistance, and Incident Detection depend on a compatible phone and have Garmin’s stated usage limitations. Garmin Pay also depends on country, payment network, and issuing-bank support. Downloaded music is available, but services such as Spotify, Deezer, and Amazon Music may require their own premium subscriptions.
Evening Report and expanded recovery guidance
Evening Report is a daily wind-down summary that brings together information such as the day’s activity, recovery context, sleep-related information, and considerations for the following day’s training. It is a wellness and training aid, not a medical or predictive system.
The watches also bring refreshed training and recovery presentations and broader Garmin Connect functionality, including custom multisport workouts and past ovulation estimates. These additions should not all be treated as entirely new sensor capabilities; some are software expansions of Garmin’s existing training ecosystem.
Triathlon Coach—an important qualification
Garmin’s launch announcement presented adaptive Garmin Triathlon Coach as an exclusive Forerunner 970 feature. It is intended to adapt workouts using performance, recovery, and health information. That is different from saying Garmin invented adaptive coaching with these watches: Garmin Coach already offered adaptive running plans.

What the Forerunner 970 adds over the 570
Full-color maps and turn-by-turn navigation
The 970 includes onboard maps, course synchronization from Garmin Connect, turn-by-turn directions, and dynamic round-trip routing. This is the most consequential difference for runners, cyclists, and triathletes who regularly train in unfamiliar places.
However, mapping is new relative to the 570—not relative to the previous high-end Forerunner. The Forerunner 965 already had onboard maps, so the 970’s upgrade is best understood as a premium expansion of the map-equipped Forerunner formula. Garmin’s 970 manual says map updates are available through Garmin Express.

The built-in flashlight is useful for pre-dawn runs, dark transition areas, emergency visibility, and ordinary tasks at home. It is not a training feature, but it may be more useful in everyday life than some of Garmin’s headline metrics.
Sapphire crystal and titanium
The 970 uses a sapphire lens and titanium bezel. Sapphire is highly scratch-resistant, while titanium gives the watch a more premium exterior. Neither material is indestructible: sapphire can still be damaged by severe impact, and the 570’s Gorilla Glass and aluminum construction may be preferable for buyers prioritizing lower cost or weight.
ECG
The Garmin ECG App is listed for the 970, not the 570. Where available, it records electrical signals and can identify patterns consistent with atrial fibrillation or normal sinus rhythm.

Availability varies by region and requires compatible watch software and the latest compatible Garmin Connect app. Garmin says the app is intended for adults aged 22 and older. It is not a substitute for diagnosis or medical care; a concerning result should be discussed with an appropriate healthcare professional.

The 970 introduces running tolerance, running economy, and step speed loss. Running tolerance estimates the impact of running and suggests a weekly maximum mileage. Running economy estimates energy efficiency after several runs. Step speed loss measures how much speed is lost when the foot strikes the ground.
Running economy and step speed loss require Garmin’s separately sold HRM 600 chest strap. They are not watch-only features, so buyers should include the accessory and the willingness to wear a chest strap in the cost calculation.
What Garmin did not add
The 570 has no onboard maps
Multiband GPS and course-related training features do not equal built-in mapping. The 570 can be a strong choice for familiar roads and planned workouts, but it is not an AMOLED successor to the map-equipped 965 in the strict feature sense.
The 570 has no ECG, flashlight, sapphire, or titanium
These are separate product-tier decisions, not minor software omissions. The 570 uses Gorilla Glass and an aluminum bezel, and Garmin lists neither an ECG app nor an LED flashlight for either 570 size.

There is no smaller 970
The 570 is available in 42 mm and 47 mm sizes. The 970 comes only in 47 mm, so buyers with smaller wrists cannot get maps, ECG, sapphire, titanium, and the flashlight in a smaller Forerunner case.
No LTE or independent calling
The speaker and microphone support calls through a paired smartphone. Neither watch replaces an LTE Apple Watch or provides independent cellular calling.
No satellite messaging, SOS without a phone, or solar charging
Garmin’s running comparison lists satellite messaging and SOS as unavailable on these Forerunners, while some fēnix Pro models offer those capabilities. The 570 and 970 also have no solar-charging model. Remote athletes should look at the fēnix or Enduro families instead if satellite communication, rugged outdoor functions, or maximum endurance are priorities.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Forerunner 570 versus 265
The 570’s main advantages over the 265 are its speaker and microphone, smartphone-linked calls and voice interaction, refreshed training-status presentation, and newer coaching and recovery features. It still does not add onboard mapping.
Garmin quotes up to 10 days of smartwatch battery for the 42 mm 570 and up to 11 days for the 47 mm version, compared with up to 13 days for the 47 mm Forerunner 265. That makes the 570 a feature and connectivity upgrade, but not an across-the-board battery upgrade. A 265 owner should not replace the watch solely in expectation of dramatically longer endurance.
Best Value
- Our brightest AMOLED touchscreen display with button controls, a lightweight titanium bezel and sapphire lens, plus a built-in LED flashlight for greater awareness in the dark during early morning or late-night runs

Forerunner 970 versus 965
The 965 already provides AMOLED, multiband GPS, music, Garmin Pay, onboard maps, and Garmin’s high-end running and triathlon platform. The 970 adds sapphire, titanium, a flashlight, ECG where supported, a speaker and microphone, newer performance metrics, and expanded coaching.
The trade-off is quoted smartwatch endurance: up to 15 days for the 970 versus up to 23 days for the 965. The 965 therefore remains a rational purchase when discounted, especially for someone who values maps and battery life but does not need the 970’s premium materials, ECG, flashlight, wrist calls, or newer metrics.
Which watch should you buy?
- Buy the 570 if you mainly run roads, train for races or triathlons, want AMOLED, music, payments, multiband GPS, recovery metrics, and phone-linked calls, and do not regularly navigate unfamiliar routes.
- Choose the 970 if you need maps, frequently travel or trail-run, want sapphire and titanium, will use the flashlight, need ECG where supported, or consider the additional battery and storage worthwhile.
- Choose the 965 if it is substantially discounted and its maps and up-to-23-day quoted smartwatch battery matter more than the 970’s new hardware and connected features.
- Consider fēnix or Enduro if solar charging, satellite messaging, SOS, or a more rugged outdoor platform matters more than the lighter Forerunner design.
- Consider an Apple Watch with cellular if independent calling and phone-free connectivity are your primary requirements. The Forerunners’ speaker and microphone do not provide that capability.
Battery expectations
AMOLED battery claims vary with always-on display use, GPS mode, music playback, notifications, connected sensors, phone connection, screen brightness, and other settings. Treat Garmin’s 10-, 11-, and 15-day figures as maximum estimates under particular conditions, not promises of normal use.
Recommended Free Tools
The smaller 42 mm 570 is rated for up to 10 days, while the 47 mm model is rated for up to 11 days. The size difference is modest, but it is relevant if battery life is a deciding factor.
