It adds or expands gear tracking, course planning, sports scores, training tools, sleep and lifestyle features, accessibility options and alerts for compatible Varia radar. Support varies by model, and the rollout began gradually rather than reaching every eligible watch at once. Garmin published a later feature-update document on June 2, 2026, so the February package is not its newest software news as of August 18, 2026.
Which Garmin watches are included?
Garmin’s February 2026 compatibility table lists these watch families: Venu X1, Venu 4, vívoactive 6, Forerunner 570 and 970, fēnix 8, fēnix 8 Pro and fēnix E, Enduro 3, tactix 8, quatix 8 and quatix 8 Pro, D2 Mach 2, Instinct 3, Instinct Crossover AMOLED, and Instinct E. Inclusion in the table does not mean every model gets every feature; consult its feature-by-feature marks for your exact watch.
The press announcement names only a subset of those models and says “and more.” The compatibility PDF is the better guide to the full list and individual feature support. Older Garmin watches are not included merely because they can run Garmin Connect.
What is new in the February update?
Gear tracking in Garmin Connect and on compatible watches
Garmin is expanding gear tracking in Garmin Connect with more categories, including running shoes, skis, snowboards, bicycle components and wheelchairs. Users can group items into collections, assign more than one item to an activity, and use a gear database with specific shoe brands and bicycle models. Tracking can account for distance, activities, hours or days, with more flexible automatic assignment.

#1 Best Overall
- Designed with a bright, colorful AMOLED display, get a more complete picture of your health, thanks to battery life of up to 11 days in smartwatch mode (5 days display always-on)
- Body Battery energy monitoring helps you understand when you’re charged up or need to rest, with even more personalized insights based on sleep, naps, stress levels, workouts and more (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- Get a sleep score and personalized sleep coaching for how much sleep you need — and get tips on how to improve plus key metrics such as HRV status to better understand your health (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- Find new ways to keep your body moving with more than 30 built-in indoor and GPS sports apps, including walking, running, cycling, HIIT, swimming, golf and more
- Wheelchair mode tracks pushes — rather than steps — and includes push and handcycle activities with preloaded workouts for strength, cardio, HIIT, Pilates and yoga, challenges specific to wheelchair users and more (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
Garmin says gear tracking is available to all Garmin Connect users. On-watch gear statistics and a progress bar are limited to compatible watches. The bar estimates use against an expected lifespan; it is not an inspection or a universal replacement rule. Terrain, maintenance, weather and individual use can all affect when equipment should be replaced. Garmin’s announcement and compatibility table describe the rollout.
Course Planner
Course Planner lets users prepare a route or race in Garmin Connect with details such as cut-off times, rest plans, checkpoints, aid stations and notes, then view the course on a compatible watch. Check your model’s navigation and mapping support before relying on it for an event: the announcement does not establish that it replaces specialist race-planning or navigation services.
Sports Scores
Sports Scores brings schedules, standings and live data for a customizable selection of 15 sports leagues to a compatible watch. Garmin says the watch must be paired with a smartphone, so this is not an independent cellular scores service. League and data availability may differ by country and account configuration; the announcement does not promise that all 15 leagues are available in every market.

Mixed Session and Garmin Fitness Coach
Mixed Session records multiple activities in one session instead of saving them as separate activities, which can suit multisport training and brick workouts. Garmin has not established in the announcement that every activity combination or transition works identically across models, so check the watch’s own support details if a specific event format matters.
Garmin Fitness Coach generates workout plans using fitness, activity history and background information. Garmin says plans may include time- or heart-rate-based cardio, different intensity levels, optional strength work and more than 25 activity types. It is software-generated training guidance, not medical advice or a substitute for a qualified coach.
Sleep Alignment and lifestyle logging
Sleep Alignment presents sleep timing in relation to the body’s circadian rhythm and shows sleep consistency on the watch. Treat it as a wellness and activity-tracking feature, not a clinical measurement or diagnosis of a sleep disorder.

On compatible watches, users can log behaviors such as caffeine and alcohol intake. Garmin reports how those entries relate to sleep, stress and HRV. Such reports show associations in the user’s tracked data; they do not prove that a logged behavior caused a particular result.
Accessibility options
Garmin lists a spoken watch face, spoken health and other watch information, hourly alerts, and display options intended to assist people with color blindness, including grayscale and several color-filter combinations. These can improve usability, but Garmin does not claim that every supported watch is fully accessible for every disability.

With compatible watch and Varia rearview radar hardware, users can hear alerts about approaching vehicles and other radar events. Garmin also requires a compatible smartphone and Garmin Connect. Voice alerts are an additional cue, not a replacement for looking around, safe road positioning or listening for traffic.

- Navigate confidently with a 3-axis compass, barometric altimeter and multi-band GPS with SatIQ technology, which delivers superior positioning while also optimizing battery life
Features for truck drivers
Garmin also describes features intended for professional truck drivers, including connectivity, health metrics, workouts suited to break periods, schedule management and travel-plaza information. Availability is model- and potentially region-dependent; check the compatibility table rather than assuming these tools appear across Garmin’s full watch range.
What depends on the app, phone or accessories?
The distinction matters: a feature may be available in Garmin Connect without appearing on the watch, or may need a phone or accessory to work. The table summarizes the stated requirements; check Garmin’s compatibility table and model-specific documentation for exact support.
| Feature | Watch support | Garmin Connect | Phone or additional requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gear tracking | On-watch statistics and progress bar are model-dependent | Gear tracking is available to Garmin Connect users | No universal extra hardware stated |
| Course Planner | Compatible watch required to view the course on the wrist | Used to prepare the course | No universal extra hardware stated |
| Sports Scores | Compatible watch required | Availability depends on Garmin’s feature integration | Smartphone pairing required; regional data availability may vary |
| Mixed Session | Model support and activity combinations vary | Check model-specific details | No universal extra hardware stated |
| Garmin Fitness Coach | Compatible watch support varies | Part of Garmin’s connected training features | No universal extra hardware stated |
| Sleep Alignment and lifestyle logging | On-watch support varies | Reports and syncing may use Garmin Connect | No universal extra hardware stated |
| Varia Voice Alerts | Compatible watch required | Required | Compatible smartphone and Varia radar required |
Garmin describes the February software update as free. That does not mean every related feature is independent of compatible hardware, regional service availability or any separate service terms.

How to install the update
Wait for an automatic update
- On the watch, enable automatic updates if that option is available for your model.
- Sync the watch with Garmin Connect and leave it connected while it checks for software.
- Install the update when it appears. Garmin said the February package would roll out over several weeks, so eligible owners might not see it at the same time.
Garmin says Garmin Connect downloads software updates in the background while a device is connected. See Garmin’s software-update support guidance for more information.
Check with Garmin Express
- Connect the watch to a computer with its USB charging cable and open Garmin Express.
- Add or select the watch, then sign in to Garmin Connect if prompted.
- Select the offered update or “Install All,” review any notes or terms, and let the transfer finish.
- Disconnect the watch when Garmin Express says it is ready. If prompted, install immediately or schedule installation for later.
Labels can vary by model and Garmin Express version. Garmin’s Garmin Express installation instructions provide additional guidance.
Before and after installation
As practical precautions, charge the watch adequately, sync recent activities, note its current software version and keep it connected until the transfer and installation finish. Avoid interrupting the process. Afterward, check your sensors, notifications, battery behavior and custom settings.
If the update does not appear
- Allow for the staged rollout; an eligible watch may not receive the update immediately.
- Confirm that your exact model supports the feature. Some additions are Garmin Connect features rather than watch firmware features.
- Sync with Garmin Connect, or connect the watch to Garmin Express so it can check for available software.
- Check whether the feature needs a phone, Varia radar, another accessory or regional service availability.
- If the watch is on beta firmware or another release branch, consult model-specific Garmin support before changing software.
Should you install it immediately?
For most owners who want the added tools, installing through Garmin’s normal update route is reasonable once it is offered. The strongest reasons to care are practical: runners can log multiple shoes or plan course checkpoints; cyclists can track components or use Varia voice alerts; multisport athletes may benefit from Mixed Session; and users who rely on spoken information or display filters may value the accessibility options.

If you are about to race, travel on an expedition, or depend on a specific sensor, payment feature, music setup or custom data field, consider waiting until you have time to verify those functions after installation. This is a practical trade-off, not a Garmin requirement to delay. Sync important activities first, and check the release notes for your model.
February was not Garmin’s latest 2026 update
The February 24 announcement is the major smartwatch feature package covered here. Garmin also published a later June 2, 2026 feature-update document, which primarily adds on-device gear tracking for Edge cycling computers, Bosch eBike Smart System compatibility and watch features including Recovery Mode, workout execution scoring, a mobility activity and health-status history. As of August 18, 2026, describe February as a specific smartwatch rollout, not Garmin’s newest software release overall.
