The Gerald Charles Maestro 8.0 Squelette pairs an unusually shaped sports-watch case with a 2.6 mm automatic micro-rotor calibre. This review focuses on the original stainless-steel reference, GC8.0-SQ-A-00; later steel and rose-gold versions have distinct straps, specifications and reported prices, so their details are identified separately.
What is the Gerald Charles Maestro 8.0 Squelette?
First announced in 2022, the Maestro 8.0 Squelette is an open-worked automatic watch from Gérald Charles. The brand names Octavio Garcia as its designer and says the bespoke GCA 5482 calibre was developed with Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier. The watch’s central contrast is between the distinctive Maestro case and a movement whose bridges and surfaces are exposed as part of the design.
Garcia described the design challenge this way: “I know intimately the base Vaucher calibre, which helped considerably in creating the skeleton version that is unique to Gerald Charles. It was important to understand just where it could be open-worked from a functional point of view and where I could allow my own aesthetic interpretation to take over.”

How the case and movement work together
A distinctively shaped Maestro case
The 39 × 41 mm case is relatively compact by its stated dimensions, while its 8.35 mm thickness gives it a notably slim profile for a sports watch. Its silhouette combines geometric forms rather than relying on a conventional round case. In the later rose-gold release, the manufacturer describes the outline as a square-and-octagon interpretation with a “smile” at six o’clock, and cites architect Francesco Borromini as an inspiration. That is the brand’s design history, rather than an independently established origin story.
On the original steel model, sapphire crystals on both sides and the open-worked dial allow the movement to remain visually present from front to back. A screw-down crown and 100 m water-resistance rating are specified for this steel reference.
A 2.6 mm automatic micro-rotor
The GCA 5482 is an automatic micro-rotor calibre. Gerald Charles describes a star-shaped gold rotor on ceramic bearings, skeletonised bridges, and a mix of rhodium, anthracite NAC-treated and gold-coloured finishes. The brand gives the movement’s thickness as 2.6 mm, its component count as 160 and its power reserve as 50 hours. The thin calibre helps make the overall 8.35 mm case possible, while the open construction makes its architecture a major part of the watch’s appearance.
The manufacturer says the calibre was designed to accept complications, but that should not be read as a claim that this reference includes one beyond its time display. No independent comparative accuracy testing or long-term durability testing is established here.
What wearing impressions tell us—and what they do not
Jorg Weppelink’s September 2023 Fratello hands-on article covers GC8.0-A-07, a later stainless-steel version, not the original GC8.0-SQ-A-00. He called the case an acquired taste, but said the classical case shape and technical movement came together for him. He also found the tested watch easy to wear and its light-blue rubber strap comfortable, while judging that the hands did not stand out clearly enough at a glance. Those are one journalist’s impressions of that reference, not universal findings or direct observations of the original black-strap model.
That legibility criticism matters for an open-worked watch: visual complexity can make quick reading less immediate. The available hands-on account identifies the hands as a concern, but does not establish how every wearer will find them under different lighting or on the original reference.

How the references differ
The shared name does not mean every Maestro 8.0 Squelette has identical specifications. Keep the reference attached to fit, strap, water resistance and pricing claims.
| Reference | Material and fit | Strap | Other reported details |
|---|---|---|---|
| GC8.0-SQ-A-00 | Stainless steel; 39 × 41 mm; 8.35 mm thick | Black Clous de Paris vulcanised rubber | 100 m water resistance; original manufacturer reference sheet |
| GC8.0-A-07 | Stainless steel; Fratello reports 39 mm width, 41 mm case length without lugs, 46 mm including lugs, and 8.35 mm thickness | Light-blue rubber, 22 mm | Fratello reports 100 m water resistance, 21,600 vph, 29 jewels and 50-hour reserve |
| GC8.0-RG-06 | 18K rose gold 4N; manufacturer states 40 mm overall fit and 8.35 mm overall thickness | Grey vulcanised rubber | Manufacturer announcement specifies 10 ATM water resistance, sapphire crystals, Super-LumiNova on the hands and 5G shock resistance measured by the manufacturer over five axes |
In particular, do not transfer the rose-gold model’s 10 ATM rating or grey strap to the steel watch, or assume the later steel reference’s light-blue strap is supplied on the original.
Price and availability depend on reference and date
Watches of Switzerland displays $62,500 for the original steel GC8.0-SQ-A-00 and invites visitors to sign up for an availability notification. This is a retailer’s displayed US price and page state, not proof that the watch is in stock or that a buyer completed a transaction at that price.
For the different steel reference GC8.0-A-07, Fratello reported a €58,000 pre-order price on 14 September 2023, with deliveries then expected from November 2023. That is historical launch information, not a current price for all versions. The available price evidence does not establish a market-wide current transaction price.
Who is the Maestro 8.0 Squelette for?
The original steel model is best understood as a design-led mechanical watch: its slim automatic movement, visible architecture and unconventional case are central to its appeal. The same combination may be divisive. A reader who prioritises an instantly familiar case shape or especially clear hands should weigh the reported legibility concern and the case’s acquired-taste character; someone drawn to open-worked mechanics and distinctive geometry may find that tension integral to the watch’s identity.
Before comparing prices or fit, confirm the full reference. Case material, strap, reported dimensions, water-resistance specification and the available price context vary by version, and the cited prices do not establish a universal current asking price.
