You can earn PADI Open Water Diver certification without a Tudor Black Bay 58—or any particular watch. PADI training involves knowledge development, confined-water practice, and open-water dives. A Black Bay 58’s stated 200 m water resistance is a watch specification, not your certification depth limit: newly certified Open Water Divers are trained to a maximum of 18 m/60 ft, or the shallower depth reached during training.
How do I learn to scuba dive?
PADI describes three phases of Open Water Diver training: knowledge development, confined-water dives, and open-water dives. The open-water phase usually involves four dives, often completed over two days. The exact schedule and arrangements depend on the dive center and course.

- Complete knowledge development. Study the course material and learn foundational dive concepts and safety practices. PADI lists learning materials and a logbook among the items students need.
- Practice in confined water. Develop and demonstrate scuba skills in a controlled setting before progressing to open water.
- Complete open-water dives. Apply your training in open water with an instructor. PADI says this phase usually involves four dives, often over two days.
PADI also lists a dive-planning device—such as a dive computer, RDP table, or eRDPML—among course needs. Ask your dive center what is included and what you must provide; a wristwatch is not a substitute for a dive-planning device, and no particular watch is required for certification.
What are the requirements for learning to scuba dive?
Age
PADI states that the minimum age is 10 in most areas. Students younger than 15 earn Junior Open Water Diver certification, which can be upgraded at 15. Children younger than 13 need parent or guardian permission to register for PADI eLearning. Confirm local requirements with the dive center.

Swimming and floating
PADI lists two water-skill demonstrations: a continuous 200 m/yard swim, or a 300 m/yard swim wearing a mask, fins, and snorkel, plus a 10-minute float or tread. PADI says, “There is no time limit for this, and you may use any swimming strokes you want.” That statement refers to the swim requirement.
Medical questionnaire
Students complete a scuba medical questionnaire. If an answer flags a condition, PADI says a doctor must assess it and sign the relevant form. Local rules may also require physician consultation, so check before enrolling or beginning training.

How deep do you go after certification?
PADI says newly certified Open Water Divers are trained to a maximum depth of 18 m/60 ft, or the shallower depth reached during training. The 200 m/660 ft waterproofness listed for the cited Tudor Black Bay 58 reference does not change that training limit. Follow your training, local rules, and the dive operator’s limits; check requirements at your destination before diving.
What does the Tudor Black Bay 58 offer?
The author’s exact Black Bay 58 reference and strap are not established here. For a specific, current example, TUDOR’s official page for reference M7939A1A0RU-0001 lists these features:

The cited reference has a dive-oriented bezel and a stated 200 m/660 ft water-resistance rating, but those specifications do not establish that a particular watch was worn or tested during training. Nor does a watch replace a dive computer or other dive-planning method, required scuba equipment, a buddy, or training. The watch’s rating is not permission to dive to that depth.

If you are comparing watches for diving, verify the exact reference and case or strap configuration, water-resistance rating, crown and bezel design, case size, and lug width. Separately, choose dives within your training and comply with local rules and operator limits. Ask the dive center what equipment the course provides and what you need to bring.
