The 2012/2013 Girard-Perregaux Sea Hawk reviewed here is a distinctive, highly capable-looking dive watch whose 44 mm angular steel case and 17.1 mm height make it a substantial wrist presence. Fratello reviewer Robert-Jan Broer praised its finishing, lume and integrated rubber strap, but found the height potentially awkward beneath a shirt cuff and the recessed date difficult to read from oblique angles. His hands-on review covered reference 49960-19-631-FK6A, supplied by Girard-Perregaux for evaluation; these are his impressions, not an independent test.

Which Girard-Perregaux Sea Hawk is this review about?

This is the HAWK-generation Sea Hawk reference 49960-19-631-FK6A, reviewed by Robert-Jan Broer at Fratello on October 16, 2013. It is a steel watch on a black rubber strap, with a 44 mm case diameter and 17.1 mm height. Girard-Perregaux supplied the watch to Fratello for a period of evaluation.

The Sea Hawk name spans substantially different watches. The 2012 HAWK launch placed this model alongside the Chrono Hawk and limited FOReverglades Hawk at Miami’s Freedom Tower, as reported by Hodinkee. Earlier Sea Hawks and the Sea Hawk II are separate generations, not alternate names for this reference.

What does the Sea Hawk look and feel like on the wrist?

Large, angular case

Broer characterized the watch as large, with its 17.1 mm height contributing as much as its 44 mm width to the substantial feel. He thought the case could catch or press against a suit cuff; he regarded it as a dive watch rather than a dress watch. A case measurement cannot guarantee fit: wrist shape, strap adjustment and clothing all affect how it wears.

Dial and legibility

The dial combines a honeycomb pattern with orange minute and seconds hands, an orange power-reserve indicator, luminous markers and a date aperture. Broer found the dial readable from most viewing angles and praised the strong lume. He found the recessed date harder to read when viewing it beyond roughly 40–45 degrees. These are observations from his review, not a standardized legibility test.

Finishing, strap and clasp

Broer praised the brushed case finishing and the way the black rubber strap integrates with the case. He also liked the feel and operation of the folding clasp. Those comments describe his experience with this example; they do not establish the condition or performance of any pre-owned watch.

What are the specifications and dive features?

Hodinkee’s December 5, 2012 launch report gives the Sea Hawk a stated depth resistance of 1,000 meters and a helium release valve. It also describes a three-dimensional octagonal steel case, a crown at 4 o’clock, a date display at 1:30 and a power-reserve display at 6 o’clock. These are launch-era specifications for this generation, not specifications to apply to every watch called Sea Hawk. The report described the model as “purpose built” for diving; that wording is the journalist’s characterization, not a new verification of a manufacturer certification.

The 1,000-meter figure is a published product specification, not a recommendation to dive with an individual watch without confirming its condition and water resistance. The sources cited here do not independently test depth resistance, helium-valve operation, or present-day durability.

  • Comfortable Silicone Strap:Comes with a soft silicone strap (22mm width, 20cm length) and pin buckle for a secure, comfortable fit. Lug-to-lug length (approx. 52mm) suits most wrist sizes.
  • Stylish & Practical Timepiece:Perfect for divers, watch lovers, or anyone wanting a reliable automatic watch. The unique colorful design (or vibrant accents) makes it a standout accessory.

How does the movement work with the display?

Fratello identifies the reviewed reference’s automatic movement as caliber GP03300-0074, based on GP3300 with an added power-reserve complication. That complication is displayed on the dial, alongside the date. Broer’s review highlights the orange power-reserve indicator as part of the dial’s visual character; it does not report an accuracy test or performance measurements.

How is this reference different from other Sea Hawks?

Generation and reference matter when comparing specifications or evaluating a listing. The Sea Hawk II Big Blue, for example, is a distinct watch: Hodinkee’s May 23, 2012 coverage describes its caliber GP033R0, 1,000-meter steel case, blue dial and rubber strap, and a world map on its power-reserve indicator. Those details should not be transferred to reference 49960-19-631-FK6A.

  • Girard Perregaux Caliber GP08400, beats at 21,600 (3 Hz) vph, composed out of 208 parts, contains 29 Jewels & has an approximate power reserve of 48 hours
  • The balance wheel is secured in place by a black PVD coated bridge at 6 o'clock. The generous proportions of the balance wheel (10.15mm in diameter) makes it less subject to disturbances and thus more accurate.
  • The micro-rotor is located to the top left of the movement, while the main-spring barrel is located to the right side for a symmetrical design.

Fratello’s historical account says Girard-Perregaux had Sea Hawk watches in the 1940s, initially different in design from the later model, and that the line became a true diver’s watch in the 1960s and 1970s. This is a brief history in the 2013 review, not a complete archival chronology. The practical point for a buyer is to identify the exact reference and era rather than assume shared construction or specifications from the name alone.

For a listing advertised as the reviewed watch, ask the seller to establish that it is reference 49960-19-631-FK6A and check the movement identification against the listing’s documents. Also verify condition, service documentation, whether the rubber strap and folding clasp are included, and the seller’s return and authentication terms. A listing’s model name alone is not enough to show it is the same generation or in comparable condition.

Verdict: a distinctive diver with a real size trade-off

Broer’s review presents the 49960-19-631-FK6A as a visually individual, well-finished Sea Hawk with strong lume and a notably integrated strap-and-clasp arrangement. Its height and width are the main practical questions for a prospective wearer, while the recessed date is a small but specific readability compromise. It is best judged as this particular HAWK-generation reference—not as a stand-in for every Sea Hawk, Sea Hawk II or later Pro model.
