The Girard-Perregaux Tri-Axial Planetarium combines a three-axis tourbillon with a miniature Earth that turns once every 24 hours and an astronomical moon-phase display. It is best understood as a moving mechanical display, not simply as a tourbillon watch: the tourbillon supplies the kinetic spectacle, while the globe and moon phase convey astronomical indications. The historical hands-on impressions below are Giovanni Di Biase’s; this article does not claim a new physical examination.
What the Planetarium Tri-Axial displays
The watch brings together three elements that move or indicate time in different ways: a tourbillon regulator rotating on three axes, a miniature terrestrial globe with a day-and-night view, and a precision moon phase. Girard-Perregaux describes this combination on its current Earth to Sky Edition product page; the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH) also outlines the functions in its watch profile.
The components are not interchangeable kinds of complication. The tourbillon’s nested motion is the visual centerpiece. The globe makes a full rotation every 24 hours, presenting a day/night view. FHH says the hand-painted miniature depicts Earth as it was in 1791, the year Girard-Perregaux was established. FHH also states that the moon-phase display requires one adjustment after 122 years. That interval is a published product claim, not an independently documented long-duration test.
How the three-axis tourbillon moves
FHH describes the tourbillon as a high-speed regulator that rotates on three axes rather than one. For the original caliber profile, it gives three cycle times: the inner carriage completes one rotation per minute, a second structure turns every 30 seconds, and a third completes a rotation every two minutes. Those timings come from FHH’s profile of the original movement and should not automatically be applied to later caliber versions.

- On the Ptolameic Watch, the sun is on the minute hand and the moon is on the hour hand and we are the center of the solar system once again.
- Features a 33mm diameter face, genuine leather band, and Japanese quartz movement.
- Battery included, and comes boxed in a beautiful tin display case.
- Click the store link near the product title for more great gifts. UPG has presents of mind.
That layered movement is why the tourbillon reads as kinetic spectacle: its changing orientation is immediately visible. It does not, by itself, establish superior real-world timekeeping. The cited profiles do not provide comparative accuracy testing against other watches.
What the hands-on account reports
Giovanni Di Biase of Horbiter recounts handling and photographing the watch at Basel in 2017 in a report published on March 27, 2021. He found the triple-axis cage hypnotic and praised the dial for balancing visible mechanical complexity with a relatively clear arrangement. Those are Di Biase’s impressions, not observations from a new hands-on review. Read his Horbiter hands-on report.

Case size, visibility and practical context
At 48 mm across and roughly 19 mm thick, both versions have a substantial published case profile. The current white-gold case is 18.82 mm thick; GPHG lists the original at 18.66 mm. Girard-Perregaux specifies two sapphire domes and a side opening on the current version, giving views into the mechanism from multiple angles. The shared 30 m water-resistance rating is a modest specification, not an invitation to treat this complex watch as a sports or swimming watch.
For a comparison with another astronomical or multi-axis watch, the useful questions are how many tourbillon axes it uses and their cycle times, what its celestial indications actually show, and how its dimensions, movement configuration, reserve and price relate to the specific reference and market. The cited material does not establish comparative accuracy or a market-sales figure for this watch.
