The comparison below covers the manufacturer-listed specifications for these two specific models—not a hands-on review or an independent test.

The researched Senator Excellence reference 1-36-01-03-02-66 keeps the display to hours, minutes, and central seconds. Both are automatic watches with manufacture movements running at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz).

- Dial Diameter: 42mm
- Housing Material: Stainless Steel
- Movement Type: Automatic 36-03
- Strap: Louisiana Alligator Leather (Black)
- Power Reserve: 100 Hours
Those dimensions do not establish how either watch will feel on a particular wrist. Lug-to-lug measurements and firsthand fit observations are not provided by the cited specifications, so try the watch on if case presence or sleeve clearance is decisive.
What does the Observer’s power-reserve display show?
The Observer’s “Auf/Ab” display indicates the remaining power reserve—the energy left before the watch needs winding or further movement from wear. It is not an elapsed-time indicator. Glashütte Original lists Calibre 100-14’s reserve as 55 hours ±10%; this is a manufacturer specification, not an independently measured result.

How long is the Senator Excellence power reserve?
Glashütte Original states a 100-hour reserve for the automatic Calibre 36-01 in the cited Excellence. That is 45 hours longer than the Observer’s nominal 55-hour figure, although the Observer’s specification includes a ±10% tolerance. The figures are manufacturer claims, not results from a common independent test.
The Excellence page also describes a silicon balance spring and bayonet movement mounting. Glashütte Original says: “Following assembly, each Senator Excellence undergoes a comprehensive 24-day series of in-house tests, which exceed the requirements of the German chronometer standard.” This is the company’s account of its testing process; it is not an independent certification finding or a published timing result for this individual watch.

Which dial and strap configuration suits your priorities?
Choose the Observer’s display if you want more information at a glance
The Observer puts the small seconds, oversized date, and reserve display alongside the time. Its silver-grainé dial, black numerals, and ivory date ground create a lighter, high-contrast appearance. The extra indications make it the more complex dial of these two references.
Choose the Excellence’s display if you prefer a simpler layout
The Excellence limits the display to time and central seconds. Its matt black dial, white railroad chapter ring, and luminous hands and numerals give it a darker, more minimal look, with the listed lume intended to aid reading in low light. Preference for either layout is subjective; the specifications alone do not establish which is easier to read in every condition.
Check the exact strap or bracelet listing
The cited Observer page lists calfskin, Louisiana alligator, and a steel bracelet with a fine adjustment mechanism. The cited Excellence page lists calfskin and grey synthetic fabric, with a 20 mm end-link width for that synthetic strap. Glashütte Original says additional straps and bracelets can be purchased individually, but compatibility, regional availability, and stock should be confirmed for the exact reference.

The Fondation Haute Horlogerie dates the Senator Observer collection’s launch to 2012 and describes it as a tribute to Glashütte observation watches associated with navigation and exploration. The historical watches it discusses were manually wound; the modern Observer instead uses a self-winding movement. The collection’s historical inspiration should therefore not be mistaken for a claim that the modern model reproduces the historical winding system.

Which one should you choose?
- Consider the Senator Observer if the Panorama Date and power-reserve display matter to you, and you want a larger 44 mm case with a small-seconds display.
- Consider the Senator Excellence if you prefer a 40 mm by 10 mm case, a three-hand layout, luminous dial elements, and the longer stated reserve.
- Compare in person if wrist fit, dial legibility, or comfort will decide the purchase; those qualities cannot be confirmed from specifications alone.
