GMT Watches Beyond the Pepsi: Six Designs With Their Own Identity

A practical GMT watch need not have a red-and-blue bezel. Compare six distinctive alternatives by design, movement behavior, size, water resistance and cited price.

You can get a practical second time zone without choosing a red-and-blue bezel. These six GMT watches take different routes: a classical Grand Seiko, a dial-ring Fortis, a glacier-textured Norqain, and more familiar sports-watch designs from Citizen, Longines, and Tudor. The right choice depends on how you set the second time zone, the watch’s size and water resistance, and how far you want to move from the traditional tool-watch look.

What makes a GMT watch different from a Pepsi?

A GMT watch displays a second time zone, commonly with an extra hand that makes one revolution every 24 hours and points to a 24-hour scale. Some watches add a marked bezel or dial ring; a rotating two-colour bezel is not required. Rolex describes the GMT-Master II as showing two time zones with a 24-hour hand and a two-colour rotatable bezel, but that familiar layout is only one way to build and style a travel watch. Rolex’s GMT-Master II overview explains its approach.

Mechanism matters as much as appearance. In a traveler, or “true,” GMT, the local hour hand moves independently in one-hour jumps while the watch keeps running and the 24-hour hand stays on home or reference time. That makes it convenient to change local time when you land. A caller GMT is commonly described as one where the 24-hour hand is adjusted independently instead. Check the exact reference’s movement behavior rather than relying on the word “GMT” in a model name. The six watches below are identified as traveler GMTs in WatchTime’s September 2026 comparison; no caller example is included here. WatchTime’s comparison discusses the distinction.

Which design direction suits you?

Grand Seiko Elegance GMT: classical rather than overtly sporty

The SBGM255 and SBGM257 are the most formal-looking choices here. Grand Seiko’s Contemporary Classics collection describes rounded forms, gently curved lugs, Zaratsu polishing and box-shaped sapphire glass. The cited collection page describes an ivory dial and blue-steeled 24-hour hand for its classic automatic Caliber 9S66 GMT, alongside a three-day power reserve. The collection lists both references at USD 5,400 on its US page accessed in 2026; check the live listing for the exact reference and details. Grand Seiko’s Contemporary Classics collection is the primary reference.

Grand Seiko attributes this design observation to veteran designer Nobuhiro Kosugi: “The uniqueness of this watch lies in the side slopes of the gently curved lugs.” The practical trade-off is that the cited collection page does not establish case dimensions, water resistance or bracelet details, so confirm those for the specific reference if they affect your decision.

Fortis Vagabond V-40: a GMT scale without a rotating bezel

The Vagabond’s white-gold 24-hour ring is integrated into the dial, making it the clearest option for someone who wants to avoid a conventional rotating sports bezel altogether. WatchTime reports a 40 mm Grade 5 titanium case and bracelet, a jumping local-hour hand, a 70-hour reserve, chronometer certification and 200 m water resistance. Its reported price is approximately USD 6,000 in the September 2026 comparison; verify local pricing. The trade-off is a prominent dial-based time scale rather than a minimalist face.

Norqain Adventure Neverest GMT Glacier: texture and substantial wrist presence

Reference N1100.22B02.B01 combines a textured dial inspired by Mount Everest crevasses with a black DLC-coated steel case, rubber strap and bidirectional ceramic bezel. Its COSC-certified NN20/2 automatic movement, developed with Kenissi, is a traveler GMT, and the bezel can help track a third time zone. WatchTime reports 100 m water resistance and an approximate US price of USD 5,100 in September 2026. At just under 15 mm thick, it has a substantial profile; choose another option if slimness is a priority.

Rank #3
Timex Men's Waterbury Traditional GMT 39mm Watch - Stainless Steel Bracelet Black Dial Stainless Steel Case
  • Quartz GMT Movement - When used in conjunction with the black and blue rotating bezel, the two-blue and white triangle GMT hand can be used to track a second time zone.
  • Stainless-steel - The stainless-steel case and bracelet are resistant to corrosion, rust, and daily wear and tear.
  • Date Window - Easily track the date in a dedicated window beside 3 o'clock.
  • Enhanced Visibility - Luminant hands ensure readability in low-light conditions.

Citizen Series 8 880 GMT: angular integrated-bracelet sports styling

The Series 8 takes a faceted, angular route, with a checkerboard dial inspired by a reinterpretation of kumiki wood joinery. WatchTime cites the NB6031-56E with a red-and-blue bezel and the NB6030-59L with a black-and-blue bezel. Both are described as using the automatic Citizen 9054 with an independently adjustable local hour hand; the 24-hour bezel can be used to follow a third zone. The reported reserve is 50 hours, with 100 m water resistance and an approximate USD 1,400 price for the cited configuration in September 2026. Verify the exact SKU and bezel color: the comparison’s prose and specification line differ on model references.

Longines Spirit Zulu Time 39 mm: compact aviation cues

The 39 mm steel case, blue sunburst dial, prominent Arabic numerals and single-colour bidirectional ceramic bezel give the Zulu Time a classic aviation-sports appearance without the Pepsi color scheme. Its L844.4 automatic movement is a traveler GMT, with a silicon hairspring, COSC certification and 72-hour reserve. WatchTime reports that the date follows the local hour when adjusted in either direction, plus 100 m water resistance and an indicative US price of approximately USD 4,000 in September 2026. The cited comparison does not establish bracelet or strap details, so check the particular configuration.

Rank #4
Timex Men's Q GMT 38mm Watch - Black Dial Stainless Steel Case & Strap
  • 38mm stainless steel case
  • Day date window on dial
  • Acrylic lens
  • Stainless steel attachment
  • Water resistant to 50m (165 ft): In general, suitable for short periods of recreational swimming, but not diving or snorkeling

Tudor Black Bay 58 GMT: vintage character, familiar tool-watch format

The Tudor is the closest of these six to the traditional rotating-bezel sports GMT: its black-and-burgundy 24-hour bezel, domed black dial, gilt details and Snowflake hands make it distinct in color and period styling, but not a radical departure in format. WatchTime describes a 39 mm case at 12.8 mm thick, a traveler GMT movement with a 65-hour reserve, METAS Master Chronometer certification and 200 m water resistance. The comparison covers a five-link bracelet with a T-fit clasp and reports an approximate USD 6,000 price in September 2026. Its aluminum bezel insert suits the vintage look, but WatchTime notes it is less scratch-resistant than ceramic.

How to narrow the shortlist

  • For the strongest visual break: start with Grand Seiko’s classical dial or Fortis’s integrated dial ring. Norqain adds a textured surface and black-coated case while retaining a rotating bezel.
  • For travel convenience: look for a jumping local-hour hand, the traveler-GMT behavior described above. All six models are identified as traveler GMTs in WatchTime’s comparison, though Grand Seiko’s cited collection page itself does not specify this adjustment behavior.
  • For a more compact profile: the cited Longines and Tudor cases are 39 mm; the Tudor is also reported at 12.8 mm thick. The Norqain, at just under 15 mm thick, is the most explicitly substantial option in the sources.
  • For higher stated water resistance: Fortis and Tudor are listed at 200 m; Citizen, Longines and Norqain at 100 m. The cited Grand Seiko collection page does not state a figure.
  • For lower cited US pricing: the Citizen’s approximate USD 1,400 figure is the lowest in this selection, followed by Longines at approximately USD 4,000. These are WatchTime’s September 2026 indicative figures, not live offers.

Specifications and availability can differ by reference, configuration and market. WatchTime’s figures are useful for comparison, while brand pages and local authorized sellers are the better place to confirm what is currently offered.
