It was not an impulsive color purchase; as Black put it, “The Sub 300T Divingstar didn’t arrive as a surprise but, rather, as a conclusion.”
In his January 25, 2026 article for Fratello Watches, Henry Black describes the purchase as the outcome of years spent owning, writing about, buying, and selling DOXA watches. His reasons are personal rather than the result of a controlled comparison: he wanted a yellow watch that felt like a tool, and he wanted one he would actually wear.
Why yellow made sense to him
Black wanted the pleasure of a bright yellow dial, but not as a status-driven choice. He saw yellow as one of DOXA’s original dial colors and valued its stated history as a visibility-focused option for underwater use. That historical association is part of the reasoning in his account; the appeal was also immediate and personal: the color made the watch feel joyful.
He had previously owned a Sub 200 Sharkhunter, a Sub 300 Whitepearl, and a Doxa Army. Those experiences helped him work out what he wanted next: an original DOXA colorway with a design and wearing character that would earn regular wrist time.

Why the SUB 300T, not the SUB 300
Black describes the SUB 300 as slimmer and closer to the proportions of the original 1960s model. He chose the SUB 300T because he preferred its greater water-resistance rating and helium release valve. Neither model is inherently the better choice; the distinction is what each buyer values in the design and specifications.
| Feature | SUB 300T | SUB 300 |
|---|---|---|
| Water resistance | 1,200 m, according to DOXA’s product listings | 300 m, according to DOXA’s product listings |
| Helium release valve | Listed by DOXA | Not stated in the cited DOXA listing |
| Case proportions | Black preferred its feel and features; exact dimensions depend on variant | Black characterizes it as slimmer and closer to 1960s proportions |
The depth ratings are manufacturer specifications, not a claim that either watch is a sensible choice for every kind of diving. For the Divingstar, DOXA’s current listing specifies a 42.5 mm stainless-steel case, 120 ATM / 1,200 m water resistance, a screw-down crown and caseback, sapphire crystal, date, and a unidirectional bezel with an integrated no-decompression dive-time calculator. The listing also specifies an automatic movement with a 38-hour power reserve and 28,800 vph frequency, but does not identify the caliber in the listing content reviewed. Black’s article identifies it as a Sellita SW200-1.
A watch he says he takes into the ocean
Black lives in Sydney and reports diving with the Divingstar and wearing it on ocean swims along the Pacific coast. He found its yellow dial legible in bright sunlight and underwater. That is his experience with his watch, not an independent visibility test or a guarantee that every wearer will find it equally legible.

For his use, the watch’s dive-oriented design mattered more than vintage proportions alone. DOXA lists the Divingstar as a 20 mm lug-width model and offers the family in different strap configurations. After removing the factory beads-of-rice bracelet, Black wore his watch on a gray NATO strap and also enjoyed it on a black rubber strap. He does not say those straps were manufacturer accessories, so his choices should not be taken as confirmation of aftermarket fit.

What to consider if you are choosing between them
- Choose by proportions as well as ratings. Black’s preference for the SUB 300T was personal; try the exact variant if a slimmer or more vintage-leaning profile is a priority.
- Match specifications to your needs. The SUB 300T is listed at 1,200 m and includes a helium release valve; DOXA lists the SUB 300 at 300 m. Those numbers distinguish the models, but do not by themselves determine which will suit your everyday wear.
- Check the exact configuration in your region. DOXA lists bracelet and rubber options for the Divingstar, while prices, stock, and available configurations can change by market. Confirm current details with the relevant regional listing.
- Verify strap fit before buying an alternative. DOXA lists a 20 mm lug width for the Divingstar, but confirm the fit and intended use of any third-party strap rather than assuming compatibility from width alone.
The point of the purchase
Black’s account is a considered personal purchase: a yellow dial he found both joyful and tied to DOXA’s tool-watch heritage, paired with the SUB 300T features he wanted for his reported ocean use. His experience explains why this particular watch made sense for him; it is not a universal verdict on the SUB 300T or a substitute for comparing the proportions and configuration that suit you.
