The Seamaster 600 Ploprof, Seamaster 120 Big Blue, and Speedmaster Mark III are distinctly early-1970s designs; the Flightmaster belongs in the conversation as a 1969 precursor whose bold design language carried into the decade.
How to judge Omega’s 1970s designs
Omega’s most distinctive designs from this period stand apart through shape and purpose, not through a proven popularity ranking. The Ploprof expresses a professional-diver brief in an unconventional case; the Flightmaster is explicitly pilot-oriented; and the Big Blue and Mark III show how far Omega pushed large, architectural chronograph forms. The shortlist below is a design judgment based on those visible traits and the models’ historical context.
Four designs worth knowing
Seamaster 600 Ploprof: the purposeful diver
OMEGA’s official retrospective, “The Seamaster at 70”, says: “In 1970, the iconic and unconventional Seamaster Ploprof was launched.” That launch date is distinct from retail availability: the specialist Omega Ploprof collector guide says retail issue began in April 1971 and discusses variations in cases and bezels.
For a design shortlist, the Ploprof’s appeal is its unmistakable, function-led silhouette and its identity as a professional-diver watch. That historical purpose does not establish that any individual vintage example remains suitable for diving; its present condition and water resistance require separate assessment.

Seamaster 120 Big Blue: an architectural case
OMEGA’s official retrospective places the Seamaster 120 Big Blue, reference 176.004, in 1972. In its design account “Omega STYLED. Timeless Watches & How to Wear Them,” Phillips describes its large, architectural case and says it draws on cues associated with the Flightmaster and prototype dive designs. Phillips calls the Big Blue most similar to the Speedmaster Mark III, which it dates to 1971; that is a specific visual comparison, not a universal collector consensus.
The Big Blue is a strong choice if the appeal is a watch that makes its case shape the main event. Its scale and architecture give it a different visual character from more familiar chronograph proportions.

Speedmaster Mark III: early-1970s chronograph design
Phillips dates the Speedmaster Mark III to 1971 and uses it as the closest visual comparison for the Big Blue in the design account cited above. That supports its place in a discussion of Omega’s early-1970s case experimentation, without establishing it as the definitive or most representative Speedmaster of the decade.
Consider it if you want an early-1970s Omega chronograph whose design can be compared directly with the Big Blue’s architectural form. The available evidence supports that pairing as a useful way to understand the period’s visual language, not as a claim that the watches are interchangeable.

Flightmaster: the pilot-oriented precursor
The Flightmaster was released in 1969, not first introduced in the 1970s. OMEGA’s historical account in “OMEGA Reaches the Skies With the New Speedmaster Pilot,” published December 10, 2024, says it was made to meet pilots’ needs. It belongs here as a late-1960s precursor whose bold design vocabulary is part of the context for Omega’s early-1970s models.
If your priority is a design tied to aviation rather than diving, the Flightmaster offers the clearest contrast with the Ploprof. Its inclusion broadens the period’s design story, but its release date should not be mistaken for a 1970s debut.

What “best” can—and cannot—mean here
These models support a design-led shortlist, not an objective ranking. The available sources do not establish comparative sales, production totals, rarity, current prices, or surveyed collector preferences. A claim that one is the decade’s most popular or most valuable Omega would go beyond the evidence.
For an individual vintage watch, design history is only one part of the decision. Check the reference, originality, condition, and service history, and seek appropriate authentication when needed. Historical design sources cannot verify a particular watch or marketplace listing.
