Choose gold for its range of colors and a precious-metal case that is less dense; choose platinum if you want a naturally grey-white appearance and a noticeably heavier feel. Neither material is automatically more scratch-resistant or longer-wearing: the alloy, case construction, and finish matter, so compare the specific watch rather than relying on the metal name alone.
What “gold” and “platinum” mean in a watch case
Watch cases described as gold or platinum are made from alloys, not necessarily pure elemental metal. Patek Philippe says it uses 18-carat gold for its gold cases, while Breguet identifies its platinum as 950 platinum—95% platinum. Those are manufacturer-specific disclosures, so check the specification for the reference you are considering.

Gold alloy composition also determines its color. Yellow, white, and rose gold are distinct options; white gold is still gold alloy, not platinum. Platinum has a naturally grey-white appearance. Patek Philippe says the color of its platinum does not change over time.

How the materials compare

|---|---|---|
| Example fineness disclosed by a manufacturer | Patek Philippe says it uses 18-carat gold. | Breguet specifies 950 platinum, or 95% platinum. |
| Color | Available in yellow, white, and rose variants, depending on alloy composition. | Naturally grey-white, according to Breguet. |
| Density | Audemars Piguet lists 15–16 g/cm³ for 18-carat gold. | Audemars Piguet lists 19–21 g/cm³ for platinum. |
| Vickers hardness | Audemars Piguet lists 140–230 HV for 18-carat gold. | Audemars Piguet lists 90–140 HV for platinum. |
| Manufacturing | Patek Philippe identifies gold as one of its case materials. | Patek Philippe and Breguet describe platinum as demanding to machine or finish. |

The density and hardness ranges above are manufacturer-published figures, not specifications for every alloy or finished watch. Audemars Piguet’s explanation is available in “The journey of mastering materials.”
Which case will feel heavier?
For comparable case dimensions, platinum is generally the heavier-feeling choice because it is denser. The cited density ranges are 19–21 g/cm³ for platinum and 15–16 g/cm³ for 18-carat gold, as reported by Audemars Piguet. That comparison does not predict the weight of a whole watch: case size and thickness, bracelet material, movement, and other components all contribute.
If wrist weight is a priority, compare the published total weights of the exact references, ideally with the same bracelet or strap configuration. Metal density alone is not enough to determine which complete watch will feel better on your wrist.

Does platinum resist scratches better than gold?
Hardness and material loss through wear are different measurements. Audemars Piguet’s published hardness ranges are 90–140 HV for platinum and 140–230 HV for 18-carat gold, so its figures do not support the blanket claim that platinum is harder. The ranges also do not establish how a particular case will wear in everyday use.

A 2021 study by Ulrich E. Klotz, Tiziana Heiss, and Teresa Fryé found two to three times lower absolute volume loss per surface area for the tested platinum alloys than for the tested gold alloys. The researchers tested two 950 platinum alloys, two 585 white-gold alloys, and two 750 white-gold alloys using a specified iterative wear, corrosion, and polishing protocol. That is a result for those alloys and test conditions—not a guarantee for every watch case or a prediction of real-world wear.
All precious-metal cases can show wear or scratches. Alloy recipe, case design, surface finish, and how the watch is used affect what happens over time. The study is published in the Johnson Matthey Technology Review.
How manufacturing affects the choice—and what it does not prove about price
Platinum’s density and machining and finishing demands make it challenging to work. Patek Philippe describes the metal as “particularly hard to work with due to the density of the metal.” Breguet likewise states that “platinum requires great mastery in both machining and finishing.” These are manufacturer descriptions of production, not evidence that every platinum watch costs more than a comparable gold model.

No model-matched, dated price comparison is established here. If price matters, compare the current prices of the exact references in the same market and configuration; a general claim about a universal platinum premium would go beyond the available evidence.

How to verify the material of a specific watch
Before buying, confirm the case material from the exact reference’s official specifications and inspect its marks. A precious-metal description, a reference code, or a white appearance alone is not enough to distinguish every alloy.
- Find the exact reference. Use the complete model or reference number, not just the collection name, and check the maker’s official specifications for the case material.
- Check the maker’s reference system. Patek Philippe says its reference letters identify case materials within its system; use the brand’s own explanation rather than applying one maker’s code to another.
- Inspect fineness and hallmark marks. IWC explains that precious-metal hallmarks indicate fineness and may include national or international marks. Read the marking in the context of the country where the watch was made or sold.
- Confirm applicable local requirements. In Switzerland, the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security says gold, silver, platinum, or palladium watch cases sold there—whether foreign or locally made—are subject to official control and compulsory marking. Requirements differ by jurisdiction.
See IWC’s technical details and the Swiss Federal Office for Customs and Border Security guidance on official control and hallmarking for those specific explanations.
Which material is right for you?
Choose gold if color choice and lower density appeal to you
- You want to choose among yellow, white, and rose gold.
- You prefer a precious-metal case without platinum’s higher density for a comparable case.
- You have identified the exact gold alloy and finish, rather than assuming every gold case wears the same way.
Choose platinum if its appearance and heft suit you
- You prefer platinum’s naturally grey-white look.
- You like the heavier feel that a denser case can provide.
- You understand that hardness figures alone do not predict wear or establish superior scratch resistance.
Try on the exact references if possible. A case’s dimensions, bracelet, and overall fit can matter as much as the metal when judging comfort and presence on the wrist.
